deanb
Scotland just scuppered the hopes of us having a dragon on our flag. but gave such a strong and close outcome that it's potentially going to knock on with the regions of England, which could be very interesting. N-E has wanted devolved powers for a while (though voted against it a decade ago weirdly). As part of the No agreement Cameron promised more devolved powers for Scotland (so to a degree they got exactly what they wanted, since initial idea was a Yes, No and Devo Max option), but it'll be interesting to see if it follows through, he might not even be around this time next year. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-29270441 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/events/scotland-decides http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-29272728
Mister Jack
I don't really know how it works in the UK but what's stopping them from just voting for independence again if Cameron doesn't keep his word?
SomTervo
Half the country didn't want it. It wont happen again anytime soon. I was hoping for a Yes showing, but the union is definitely not a bad thing.
TheFlyingGerbil
I liked the flag with black ground and yellow behind the + cross. Didn't want you getting your hands on our dragon. Independence always comes across as more popular than it is because it's that group that's banging on about it there was no need for unionists to be making a noise before now. I think there were major flaws in the yes campaign which salmond childishly refused to acknowledge. issues like banks having to be based where the majority of their customers are (ie England) having to take the euro to join the EU etc. and I'm not saying they couldn't have been worked through but the way he reacted i think did a lot of damage e.g. saying Westminster would defo give them the pound even though they may not have been allowed it and then just saying they'll use it anyway even if we didn't want them to we can't stop them. It's just much more a romantic than practical notion. As for more devolved powers for the regions, I am dead against it for the simple reason that it is just more bureaucracy to pay for and more scumbag MPs screwing us over for their own benefit. Having said that I would like Westminster to try and spread the wealth out around the country e.g. by giving tax breaks for companies setting significant parts of their business in the north. deanb
I think the Yes campaign was slightly sabotaged by the timing, it was somewhat rushed through (and I think Westminster liked it that way) rather than having the aim for 2016 where there would be a longer stretch to get it all planned out a bit more. Which led to the whole issue on where the money would come from and so on.

Hot Heart
A cool little site that presents party policies on key issues, you select them without knowing which belongs to which (though UKIP and BNP are pretty easy to spot...) and then tells you how you sided. http://voteforpolicies.org.uk/ Turns out I'm mostly Green with some Lib Dem (surprise, surprise) and a smidgen of Labour.
TheFlyingGerbil
Kind of scared in case I get some dodgy parties. [...] OK, that was quite hard to decide on some of them (mostly when several were samey) but I ended up 6 Green, 2 Lib Dems and one for Labour. Wouldn't have minded seeing if LD were mostly my second choice as we didn't actually have a Green candidate in my constituency last time and I doubt we will next so I'll probably stick with Lib Dems even though Labour will most likely win as it always does here. deanb
So there's been some protests in the UK. Cos of stupid bans on what porn can be made in the UK (though nothing limiting what can be watched mind). deanb
http://thepublandlord.com/ Al Murray, "The Pub Landlord" is standing against Nigel Farage in the general election. • Foreign PolicyGermany has been too quiet for too long. Just saying. For the non-brits: He's a caricature stand-up, playing the role of an overly patriotic pub landlord. And he's beating Eddie Izzard going into politics too (and wouldn't surprise me if he gets a decent amount of votes, certainly getting some attention).

deanb
There's a reason there was an episode about it, cos voting in a cartoon character is likely something we could end up doing. We do have likes of Monster Raving Loony Party.
Thursday Next
I like it. I think that we have missed having a party to vote that is an equivalent of a spoiled ballot. People started voting UKIP because they wanted to punish the top parties at the moment. With FUKP we can have an opportunity to do that without voting in a hideous bunch of racists.

TheMightyEthan
He's practically tied with Cameron even. *Edit* - Something I don't understand about politicians is why they don't feel like they can act like real people. In the Republican primary's for the 2012 presidential election, for instance, while Herman Cain was running he just seemed so stiff and artificial. Then, after he dropped out, he kept making appearances but was much more natural at them, culminating in his appearance at Stephen Colbert's Rock Me Like a Herman Cain event. He went from someone I very much disliked to someone who, while I still wouldn't have voted for, I would at least have been okay with had he been elected. I think Mitt Romney had a similar problem, where he just seemed like a robot all the time. It's like they don't understand how far the "I wouldn't mind having a beer with that guy" sentiment can actually go. If someone seems like a real human person to you then it's much harder to have strong negative feelings about them. deanb
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-31691060 New portrait for the coins. Seems relatively similar to the last one tbh, but she hasn't changed much over the last 20 years or so. The comments are obviously a joy to read with the republicans taking a chance to make jabs at us having a monarch.

deanb
Popular not-quite national anthem of UK is "rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves". Of the top 50 places with the largest tidal variance Elizabeth II is the monarch of over half of them (most being in UK n Canada). Thus a hereditary power to control the waves. ...it's a shit joke I guess. At least I didn't mention about turning into a lizard.
