Parliamentary discussion on banning Trump from UK (It's some hours long so spoiler alert: He's able to come to UK but begrudgingly..while taking the mick out of him. Mainly it didn't go to vote, but hey got to actually take the piss out of Trump and it's all fine cos parliament.).

Can you add a poll in here with

A. From uk, want to stay

B. From uk, we should leave

C. Not from uk, you should stay

D. Not from uk you should leave

And any other responses you can think would be useful? Might be interesting.

http://indy100.independent.co.uk/article/this-map-shows-which-countries-most-want-britain-to-stay-in-the-eu--bk0H4iWXRx

This is a very short article, it also shows which countries most want uk to leave. It does show also that uk itself is at 10% "net remain" I.e. Ten percent more want to stay in Europe than leave. I would imagine the leavers would be more motivated to vote though so with only ten percent in it the result of a vote may not reflect majority opinion.

I think it's pretty mixed. On one hand it's kinda nice to hang around with a hard power, as much as we're sort of an "in" as a soft-power with many nations; commonwealth, Europe n such for you guys. On the other hand the Blair-Bush relationship sort of led to some pretty toxic results, which is why I think in his first few months Obama kinda distanced and snubbed UK a bit (which didn't set things off on a great foot which continues to this day). And yeah, Cameron is a bit naf so trying to appeal to UK through him would be a bad idea.

I think in general we're keen on Obama at least. But obviously US is seen a bit extreme of late with the shootings n such, and Trump is kinda scary. Tories have power until 2020, though if it's Cameron all that time is to be seen, which'll line up with your next election I believe too so likely from 2020 will be a "renew" of that, otherwise over the next few years likely to be a distant. Especially if we leave EU. If you can pally with Merkel that's more sensible use of time. Especially as Tories are trying to befriend China which is a bit of a "uhhhh", alongside the whole "leaving the EU" thing.

So IDS has resigned, claiming it's cos the disability cuts but it's pretty clear it's over the whole "Brexit"(hate that term) divide. IDS has been happy to push for a bunch of extremely unsavoury anti-disabled/poor reforms for years as head of DWP. Good riddance, though hoping his replacement is better but given voting record not likely. He's right to be attacking the coked up shit stain of humanity we call Chancellor, and unlikely he'd ever make PM but Camerons days are looking glummer by the hour. Doubt he'll make it to the end of this term, especially after the EU vote.

Gonna be good watching in the lead up to the EU vote to see the Tories tear themselves apart.

Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 came into power today, with the main aim of cracking down on "legal highs". Now I'm all for cracking down on "legal highs" given they can be made of pretty much anything, some oregano with crushed bath bomb mixed in for all you know. And that's bad and dangerous. Problem is they've written such a vague and broad law that they've had to exempt:

  • medicine
  • alcohol
  • nicotine & tobacco
  • caffeine
  • food

Food!

Anything that induces a "psychoactive effect" pretty much is outlawed, but so much affects us in that way. Even chocolate which you give to kids! And it's super stupid to crack down on "legal highs" and then exempt alcohol and nicotine which are known to be seriously damaging to health and society at large. I don't know who said it but something along lines of "if alcohol was invented today it'd be outlawed".

I think the idea behind these laws is to make sure that new substances are vetted before they are released to the public en masse. Yes, nicotine and alcohol are harmful, but we know what the harms are, generally. What's silly is when the harms are relatively mild but a substance still is not allowed to be sold, even in a regulated way that would minimize the risk. I'm talking about marijuana, people. Legalize it posthaste.

ETA: I do not mean that we should legalize the weird synthetic marijuana that has prompted these laws.

It's not primarily tax reasons though, if it were marijuana would be legal and they'd just tax the shit out of it. Really it's more to do with the fact that "respectable" people used alcohol and nicotine when drugs were starting to be regulated, and undesirables used marijuana and other drugs.
