TheForgetfulBrain
On a side note: I don't really get the idea behind $1 stores (possibly because I'm a guy). Normally you would have everything from a certain category in one place, e.g. electronics, foodstuffs, toys, etc. It's easy for people to say "Hey, I need gadget/snack/toy. I know, I'll go to the electronics/grocery/toy store!" What is the $1 store for? "Hey, I need [something that probably costs around $1]. I know, I'll go to the $1 store!" And if they don't have it there, you can always try the $1.50 store. When I was a kid I loved the $1 store because it meant my mom would actually buy me a toy - because hey, it was $1, why not. Bouchart
I've seen stores that have names like "99 Cents and Up". That kind of defeats the purpose because most stores fall into that category.

MagicMagicPony
Graphic Designer. I freelance at a p big company doing illustration and trend researchhow do you trend research? It is like, Trend Research-Lite. Mostly following blogs and fashion shows and magazines and then picking out The Big Ideas for each season & then making big "inspiration boards" specific to whichever project they need them for. Only some of it is actual fashion though, I mostly pull for graphic trends. Like, I have been trying to convince them that handlettering is not as cool as they think it is anymore, (not to mention a production nightmare when you are doing versions for spanish and french) and I have to show them what IS cool now but since the company I work for is supposed to be a bit uncool I have to help them figure out exactly where to sit on the lame-to-awesome spectrum. If that makes sense?

MagicMagicPony
Well, the immediate lady is totes stuck in the 80s and not particularly bright, and the other one is a lot more aware, but he is kinda fancy-pants and so he usually panders to the customer base or expects way too much from them. So... stuff generally comes across looking kind of dumb.

Little Pirate
We have a lot of seasonal goods. Mainly what people come to buy are just a few things for their house or for a party. I've partaken a few things, myself. When I first moved out of my parents this store saved me a ton of money. We sell housewares and cleaning supplies, food/candy, health and beauty, crafts, stuff for electronics and pets, stationary, party supplies and toys. So the store itself is really handy and we get all types of people. Rich and poor, every ethnicity, and kids. But with all kinds of people I meet all kinds of stress. I get trailer park people screaming at me because my store won't take EBT/food stamps for their food items, and richer people upset that we won't take their credit card. And kids just being annoying and unaware of this magical invention called 'tax'.
Chewblaha
I'm a sub and work for GameStop. Our store hours are 9AM to 10PM. We close at 10PM. Our boss has kept us to 11:45 for the past couple of weeks and our DM got mad that we've been getting extra hours. So what does my manager do? Schedules me an hour later to get out at 11:30 every time I work for the next three weeks. Fuuuuck. What does working at GameStop mean? It means I get to hear this shit every two minutes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo16cDFprds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-_0AbrA2Z0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTp2REwC8oo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoso0SNJiQU&feature=related
Showmeyomoves!
And kids just being annoying and unaware of this magical invention called 'tax'. You're sure they're not just foreigners? That always throws me off when I visit the US. This one time I bought an album at a record store, and through some miracle I had exactly enough change in my wallet. Of course, when I got to the register, it was more than that because for some reason Americans don't add the tax on the price tag. So I had to use a card. Little Pirate
I get kids who will hop on their bikes and come down here during the summertime and 75% of them don't realize they need a few extra cents with that dollar. Usually the person behind them tosses them some pocket change, thankfully. As far as foreigners, the worst I have to deal with is just the lack of direct communication. Trying to explain which button to press for credit kind of thing, or being unable to understand what they are looking for. I don't get mad because foreigners are usually much more polite to me than other customers.

It's also why we have 99 Cent stores that are totally better than Dollar stores by one cent. American marketing is like one big illusion show. And it works, too. It is literally the complete opposite with me. You have ultra respect for trawling through retail, for I know those feats just as well as anyone. Yeah you'd think with the Sales Tax done at a State level they'd maybe add it to the sticker price. Pretty much the only places around here that don't add VAT on the price are business outlets (Though they tend to have a smaller heading underneath with "with VAT included £xx.xx". I used to buy things for my day from Misco who would be one of those Business outlets, and the lack of VAT would really throw me off on things that cost hundreds)
