Mr W Phallus
Couldn't find the original pic, so i took a screen. Could you upload that to the smoovesonian so I can steal it? Pleeeeeease.
Kovach_
Done, and i found the original so you don't have to crop it or anything. I noticed the Smoovesonian resized it, so here's the full rez one just in case.
Pirandello
Wow, Saturnine. Your desktop is like... barren. With no icons. And here's my current one:

MasterDex
My desktop is visually busy but tidy. The selection of game shortcuts are just a selection of non-steam games I have installed. I tend to keep the ones I'm still playing, plan to play soon or have still to finish on my desktop. The battlefield gadget you see is supposed to be showing my stats. I'm not really a stats whore but I've gotten into the habit of seeing it there. My background is some nice art from a certain artist (props if you can guess who it is) for now but I'm always changing it. A while back I was into making my own wallpapers (mostly anime related, many from request) and I tend to cycle through those quite a bit. Here's an example: I also have this great Bleach Wallpaper that I frequently throw on my desktop. It's resized but I have the original if anyone wants it. Saturnine Tenshi
Desktop icons are my bane. My bete noire. My greasy Rosie O'donnel Pig-in-a-blanket.
Pirandello
Thing is, though, I would put my desktop icons somewhere else if I could, but if I do, I don't have ease of access to them. Perhaps if there was some sort of wheel application that I could just move all my shortcuts into, it'd make it look nicer.
Saturnine Tenshi
You could create a Quick Launch bar.

deanb
Yeah I tweaked with Windows 7 n got one set up. Kinda nice. Still prefer a desktop with stuff on.

I just Googled that and it didn't turn up much besides turning my desktop into a Vista sidebar with clock and calendar. You could create a Quick Launch bar. How would one go about doing that? I'm not particularly familiar with those. xP Edited April 7, 2011 by Pirandello

Wait, don't tell me...was it the Final Fantasy artist? I should really know this since I think it was you I stole that image off to use as my background when you posted some of the artist's work in a comment on Kotaku a while back. Edit: Forgot to say thanks Kovach. Edited April 7, 2011 by Mr W Phallus

Stardock have a good program that allows you to organise your desktop icons into groups and hide/show them with a click. it's called Fences. I should actually download it again myself. His name is Yoshitaka Amano. He's got an anime coming out next year called Deva Zan. Love his art. I lied about the props though. I just have the one. Saturnine Tenshi
@Pirandello: Right-click the taskbar. Toolbars -> New toolbar... -> Make a folder and put shortcuts in that folder @MasterDex: One of the few good things to come out of Final Fantasy fame. I love that guy. deanb
I useFences, which makes getting screencaps for this thread a snap cos I just double click and poof my icons are gone. Stardock also make Objectdock which is mostly useful for say folks who have a dual monitor layout where monitor 1 is also their console playing TV. Quick Launch...what OS you on (I went back to check and you have no taskbar which makes identifying windows versions a pain. ...then agian I look back n see the recycle bin. Basically just right click your taskbar and in "Toolbars" option pick Quick Launch. Add and remove icons as you see fit. I have my bar double decker, so if you want to do that then click the option for "lock the taskbar" then drag the top of your taskbar until it pops and doubles in height. then use the ..fuzzy dot grip thing on the quicklaunch bar to move it to the bottom. Then re-lock the taskbar. Windows 7 users will need to be a bit more involved as quicklaunch as a setting is hidden by default due to the new taskbar being a hybrid. http://www.howtogeek...r-in-windows-7/
Pirandello
Wow, Fences is great. I bet it'll make my computer look even nicer when I go shopping for a new widescreen monitor this weekend (upgrading from my 5:4 ratio monitor).
TheMightyEthan
I find desktops with icons hideous. Task bar is about the only thing i don't mind. I agree whole-heartedly. The only thing on my desktop is the recycle bin.
Kovach_
Why don't you remove it?
TheMightyEthan
Because I like to have things sent to the recycle bin instead of deleting them outright because sometimes I accidentally delete the wrong thing, or decided I didn't want to delete it, but I also don't like things sitting in the recycle bin for extended periods of time, so I like it there so I can easily empty it. tl;dr: OCD
Kovach_
I think i'd go crazy with just a single icon sitting there... watching me... all the time. At least if there were two... Maybe if i put it right in the middle of the screen... < Symmetry OCD. Edited April 7, 2011 by Kovach_
Saturnine Tenshi
Just go to your desktop settings and hide it. That doesn't get send it to bin heaven. It only hides the drooling concubine so that her moist mouth(tried lips first... too accidentally lewd) doesn't distract you.
TheMightyEthan
No I know I can hide it, but I like it there so I can conveniently empty it when I'm done deleting things. Right click -> Empty Recycle Bin
Mister Jack
I can stand like...3 or 4 vertical rows of icons if they're neatly organized. Anything more than that and I have to do some cleaning.
TheMightyEthan
Before I started having Steam open all the time I used to keep icons for all my installed games on the desktop. Now I just use Steam.
