Commander Shepard Posted December 21, 2010 Report Share Posted December 21, 2010 Back in the day, traded in my NES for a Sega Genesis that included the first Sonic the Hedgehog game along with Streets of Rage 1 and 2. The weird thing was the controller that came with the console was broken, and only the A (or maybe C, one of the two) button worked. The first game I tried that evening was Streets of Rage 2 and because only one button worked, I could only do the Superattack that drained health per use, so I thought the trick of the game was to kite the baddies around to be able to pummel them all with the superattacks to maximize life. Oh how unto the next day, when I woke up and started reading the manual did I learn that there were OTHER moves and came to the conclusion the controller was broken, which I eventually got swapped for a working one. Genesis changed that (for awhile.) Wish they had kept the original cases, they were so sweet. I liked a lot of Genesis games too, still do. Wish they had kept the original cases, they were so sweet. they may have been sweet but they sure weren't environmentally friendly. there was so much plastic on those things! anywho, on topic, i loved my genesis. i also had xmen, and toe jam and earl was one of my favorite games back in the day. i also enjoyed me some earthworm jim and ecco the dolphin. and, of course, the faaaaantastic RPG series of phantasy star and shining force before they wrecked them by trying to "update" them for newer systems. stupid sega. I guess it's ignorance. I can side the good sides of both of them. The little black console had a lot of great exclusives and it's still fun to play. First played one round a friend's when I was around 9-10. We used to spend ages playing Sonic 2, with me taking 'control' of Tails. It was cool being able to collect rings and attack baddies without the risk of actually 'dying' (because I was rubbish); even if you had to make sure to keep up with Sonic. It probably goes a way towards explaining why I've always been quite drawn to co-op games/modes. When I did get my own I had a bunch of games that came with it, but mostly stuck with Sonic 3, now playing with my cousin (again, as Tails). Before the days of "limited edition" promotions in games, Working Designs came up with different CD artwork for Lunar. There were something like 10 designs total and you wouldn't know which design you got until you actually purchased and opened the game. No gaming magazines at the time talked about it; it was just one of those things you discovered if you and a friend happened to see each other's copy of the game and notice they were different. When the SegaCD died out I bought a few unique ones off of friends who were selling all their games. I still have them packed away somewhere with manual, CD, and inserts in pristine condition. But the plastic cases themselves are cracked to hell. Those old SegaCD cases were designed like crap and as far as I can tell, there is just no way to replace them like you can with PSX cases and such. Wow, I didn't know that till this day. I only knew one other person with a Sega CD and he wasn't really into RPGs. I had both of the Lunar Sega CD games, still do. Like you said the packaging was fantastic, used to love those old WD instruction books. I'll have to dig my game out and see which insert I ended up with. But I remember playing games like Sonic, X-Men, and TMNT Hyperstone Heist. Most of my Genesis experience came from buying a used Genesis in the PS1/N64/Saturn era, and then from emulation. There's a good number of sweet games to play. TMNT Hyperstone Heist may not have been TMNT Turtles in Time, but it was a fantastic Genesis game. Warsong is another great game because its actually Langrisser localized into english. Der Langrisser for the SNES was translated by fans as well as Langrisser II for the Genesis which never made it over here. It's a neat strategy RPG. Predator 2 was another game I remember from back when the Genesis was still going. A friend of mine had it. Those 3 red dots were always creepy. I have good memories of both systems but it seems like there were just more good games on the SNES. Shinobi 3 was the best of the series on the Genesis and a really fun game. I just feel like Genesis titles were generally less popular and that's why it's perceived that it had less good games. Sort of like how the PS3 was for a while. Most expensive game I ever bought was Street Fighter II for $83. Still seemed like a good deal at the time considering how many quarters we were putting into the arcade.
