Yantelope
I have fond memories of Sears demo units. That's where we got to play Mortal Kombat because my parents didn't want us to play it.
Mister Jack
I posted this on the "name that game" thread but I LOVE this game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcWl2rI1qY4
ceedee
I found a working Genesis with Sonic 2 in its original case in a dumpster the other day, cables and controllers and everything. How lucky am I? I mean seriously.

Cyber Rat
The Mega Drive always felt like the B Production console for me, in all it's trashy glory. The SNES was mainstream Hollywood dipped in happiness and PG-13 rainbows.
MottZilla
The Genesis/Megadrive actually was more "mainstream" than the SNES in North America for a time. Somewhere between 89 and 92. But then Sega pulled its infamous dumb ass moves and managed to even leave the 16bit market almost solely to Nintendo's SNES.
Yantelope
It was the Sega CD, the 32X and other stupid crap that helped kill the Genesis quicker. It was also the fact that the SNES was just a technically superior system in many ways.

It was also the fact that the SNES was just a technically superior system in many ways. In what ways? I really don't see what that has to do with anything, or how it "ended" any faster than the SNES either. It seemed that whole generation died with the PS1 and N64 (and I guess the saturn started it.) Yantelope
yes but the releases for the Genesis trailed off quicker than they did for the SNES.
Faiblesse Des Sens
that really didn't answer anything. nor did you really provide any evidence.
MottZilla
yes but the releases for the Genesis trailed off quicker than they did for the SNES. The Sega CD and Sega 32X didn't directly have any such effect on the Genesis. The reason also that the SNES kept going so late was because of the delay of the N64. If the N64 had been ready sooner, SNES would have died out sooner. The Saturn was out and Sega shifted their focus to it and let the Genesis rot. You have to understand that in Japan the MegaDrive wasn't the success that the Genesis was and in the end the Sega Saturn did well in Japan even though they like the Genesis, like the Saturn die in the US. SNES wasn't "technically superior" in some general way. Both systems had strengths and weaknesses compared to each other.
Yantelope
Well, the SNES had higher quality sound, could produce more on screen colors and had a larger color palate. It had mode 7 effects and I believe it had more on screen sprites and other effects that the genesis couldn't produce. There were a ton of reasons why the SNES was "technically superior". I would also add this: "By 1994, SEGA had lost substantial ground to Nintendo in America. The two had been fairly close going into 1992, with Nintendo making strong gains against SEGA, thanks in no small part to the fact that every Super NES came with a copy of the acclaimed Super Mario World. According to market data, SEGA had a 55-percent share. But when SEGA started fracturing its audience with add-ons like the SEGA CD and 32X and Nintendo kept on producing triple-A games for its loyal fans, the battle was won. Nintendo pushed ahead of SEGA, which spent all of its 16-bit good will on the ill-fated Saturn. " http://retro.ign.com/articles/965/965032p1.html "The Genesis does have some truly beautiful games, but when you're working with a palette of 512 colors, there's only so much you can do. Oh, the SNES? 32,768 colors, and it could display 256 of those onscreen at once--compare that to the Genesis's 62." http://www.theflatness.com/2008/11/snes-vs-genesis-eternal-struggle.html Also, this picture is lawlz Edited January 18, 2011 by Yantelope

Mister Jack
Toejam and Earl 2 was such a weird departure though. It wasn't a terrible game by any means but....it played NOTHING like its predecessor in any way whatsoever.

Mudkip3DS
One of the top reasons why I love the Genesis (even though I wasn't even alive for its release): Comix Zone. Goddamn, this game was so advanced for its time. It's easily at the top of my favorite Genesis games, even if it is hard as hell.

Mister Jack
I bought the sega genesis collection on steam while it was 7 bucks, and it has some pretty good stuff on it. Also has a fair amount of crap, though...I wish there was a collection made up of just the good stuff, but you gotta have filler in there somewhere, I guess. Yantelope
So who had Virtua Racing on the Sega Genesis? This game was freaking $90 when it came out because it had an extra chip called the S.V.P. It's amazing to me how freaking awesome this game was when it came out and how butt ugly it is now. Check out those wheels, it's gonna be a bumpy ride. It's actually pretty impressive for a Genesis game though. The cart was huge because of that SVP chip. Also the arcade version had these crazy pressure pads that would press up against you when you were racing to make if feel like you were taking the turns. Later they got smarter and just made the whole cockpits of the arcade move. It was a really cool experience though. Strangelove
I finally played and finished Sonic CD on my PSP. What an awesome game. Im currently going through all the Genesis Sonic games. And id also like to say that overall I think Sonic has had the way better soundtracks than Mario. At least in the 2D games. Theyre just great and weird as hell. Edited October 23, 2011 by Strangelove
