Dead Space

The demo wasn't bad imo, but it really didn't show much new content.

I think the demo was really just a medium for EA to bring new players up to speed on the story of Dead Space.

On that note, I really hope the opening narrative is left out of DS2. One of the things I loved about the first Dead Space is that they don't beat you over the head with the story. Like Bioshock, the story is picked up peripherally from the surroundings.

And a side note: They only mention it in the demo, but DS2 has multiplayer. I'm sorry, but yet again I feel like this is a stupid example of just tacking on multiplayer. You want to talk about gaming tropes that have to go? How about the assumption that every damn game has to have a competitive multiplayer mode?

I merged HotChops' Dead Space 2 Demo thread with this one, since so far we've mostly been talking about the demo in here anyway.

*Edit* - On topic, I'm skeptical about the multiplayer, but I'll give it a shot. Like Jack points out, I was also very skeptical about the AC:B multiplayer, but that turned out to show some real promise.

Downloaded it last night, and it's everything I was expecting. There's more action, but there were definitely some scary moments. What might have helped was my TV's speakers. One moment everything is calm and almost mute, and then it's loud enough to wake the dead!

It looks like the weapons they gave you as default really made the difference. I was really thinking I was going to die after those Necromorph kids surrounded me. Oh wait, I have the Line Gun! BAM! I'm still really rusty, and when I was low on health, and I saw the Necromorph at the end, I was like, "Yelp, I'm not gonna make it."

Forgot to mention it in my previous post, but it feels like the psychological aspect of it could really add to the scares.

First one had a great atsmophere and sound design, but wasn't really that scary.

When playing the demo,

the part when the tubes suddenly come alive with corpses for a second really made me jump

Also the fact that the next room was identical to that one really sort of gave an impression that going through the first room might've been a hallucination.

The first one wasn't psychologically scary, but I was tense the whole fucking time. They did a good job of making sure you never quite felt safe. Like... I know I'm probably safe, but I can't ever let my guard down, because the instant I do they're going to fuck me over.

Yeah, I was definitely tense, but it wasn't scary.

For example, I started playing the first Penumbra game once and found myself hiding behind crates because I didn't want to see what had just made that noise around the next corner  It was the first time I was genuinely afraid to proceed in a game. The first Silent Hill also came pretty close to that when I played it last year. The atmosphere is so goddamned creepy that it feels like the town itself is alive and out to get you. In some areas, I found the sections without any enemies to shoot to be scarier than when I was fighting or running away.

There were times in Dead Space when I didn't want to enter the next area cause I knew something horrible would happen to me. But yeah, I get what you mean, I was more scared of what was going to happen to me than actually scared of the necromorphs in and of themselves.

Played the demo. It's a lot like the first, but I'm ok with that. The swearing when I used the melee attacked seemed pointless, especially when he did it as I melee'd a floor.

Still annoyed by the addition of multiplayer. I looked over the achievement list and there's a good chance there aren't any multiplayer specific achievements, which would be nice.

The swearing actually came across as 'gruff action hero' to me. He says things like 'Die you f*ck!' (something like that). A bit odd, but I would've been ok with it if they programmed it so he only swore when he was actually killing a necromorph ... not a floor panel <_< I dunno, I'm ok with the voice and all, I guess I thought him being mostly silent in the first worked fine.

Also, they took away the incredibly-awesome-looking-but-incredibly-pointless alt fire on the Pulse Rifle and replaced it with a grenade launcher that looks lame but is actually helpful. So I'm sort of indifferent about that.

What I found odd was how Isaac seems to no longer be able to open lockers/storage boxes on wall or whatever. Now he has to break them open with a melee attack?

Ultimately, it's a change that doesn't change much of anything. It doesn't bother me, but it does bring up the question of why they bothered changing it at all.

Just try running into the first room and meleeing a bunch. On the plus side, you can now melee faster, and melee in a circle. Which is mildly entertaining.

Also, that one javelin weapon turned out to be cooler than expected, I thought it would do the usual 'shoot spike into enemy, press a button to blow it up; shtick.
