Dead Space

There's a trailer on PSN that basically summarises the plot of the first one in about 2mins. It leaves out specific details of what happened to Kendra and Hammond. But at least you'll know roughly what happened on Ishimura and why /how Isaac got where he is.

Apparently he does talk in this one. Though I didn't mind/notice that he was silent in the first one.

Also, after the first time I play through a game I like to have the option to listen to my own music, as stupid as it sounds, I prefer having my music during gameplay, instead of the normal sounds, it's much more fun like that to me :P

Multiplayer makes sense, I hadn't thought of that. And for some games I can see making your own soundtrack in single (I always do in racing/sports games, and I can def see doing it in a game like Bulletstorm), but for a game like Dead Space that's all about atmosphere I feel like changing the audio environment would ruin the experience.

I minded that he didn't talk. I have a problem with horror games where the main character doesn't show any character, makes me care less about them (reason why I hated SH4's main character. He was such a non-entity...). I'll try and give this one a shot then. Might be more to my liking.

That's interesting to me. I don't mind silent characters, because I am the character (even if it's 3rd person), and I'm not a non-entity to myself. If anything, having a talking protagonist (when I don't get control over the dialog) makes it harder for me to get into the game, because then they're not me and I have a harder time empathizing (not a hard time, mind, I'm not a heartless monster, I can empathize with people just fine, but it's easier to empathize with myself). Plus if the protagonist talks it opens the door to him saying stupid things that break my immersion.

That makes me think of a time in Dead Space 1 where Hammond is saying something about the Security Wing, but because of his accent it sounds like "Security Wang", which made me laugh and completely destroyed the tenseness that had been built up to that point. Dead Space's atmosphere is quite good though, so I quickly got back to being tense.

The game does tension so well. It teaches you early on that enemies can come from any direction and there's rarely a time that you can retreat down a corridor, but your back to a wall and take your enemies out without the nagging feeling that something is going to either crash through the vent behind you or drop down on you from above.

They've also got that "something in the walls" sound perfected so you never really feel totally safe.

And finally, areas with save points and benches and stores would normally be considered "safe" areas. Not so in DS1. It really keeps you off balance.

Yeah, i never understood people who use custome soundtracks in games that dont have licensed music. Its ok for multiplayer or sports, racing and maybe even fighting games, rpgs or horror or anything with an actual score i find is retarded.

I dont want to listen to pantera or lil wayne while i play final fantasy 13 or assassins creed, sorry.

im glad ps3 games are so selective on what games get custom soundtrack options.

Im all for freedom to do whatever you want, but fuck you. Dont ruin games with your lame ass soundtracks.

This game is awesome.

the guy who rescues you at the beginning dies in the most awesome way possible.

also i thought the punching and stomping in the original had a good feel and sound to it, but in dead space 2 its pretty much american history x curbstomp quality. Feels great.

Serious spoilers? It's in the beginning of the fucking game and pretty obvious it was gonna happen.

But I haven't played ANY of the game, didn't know anyone would be there for anything like that to happen, and I've been trying hard not to watch any videos or read any articles on it (save looking at reviews to make sure it's good for a buy). It's not cool having a total 'fresh experience' blackout spoiled days before I'm going to play it.

I didn't even want to know the means by which he died. (Sure, not much of a spoiler, but I don't want Ethan hammering me again =D)

Hmm, Dead Space is one of those games I'd rather watch someone play. I played the demo, and it really got my interest but somehow I didn't really feel it gameplay wise.

And yes, also because I'm a chicken. -_-

The DS2 demo sucked. It was repetive, and it cuts off just before the good part... well, I guess that second thing is to be expected...

anyway, just got my copy in the mail via Gamefly and finished the first chapter.

I'm loving it. It takes all the good stuff from the first one and improves it without creating any new problems. So far, I've found the criticisms to be unfounded. I've yet to die a "cheap" death, but then again I have only done the first chapter.

I also don't find it to be much more difficult, but maybe that's because I'm a veteran of the first game. Every time I enter a new area I quickly observe the basic room layout; noting where there are vents and other possible monster spawn locations. Then I look for potential kinesis projectiles if I need them. When the monsters start popping out, I run to the edge of the room and never fight in the middle. Every corpse I approach I check from a distance to see if it's a possible necromorph and I always reload ahead of time.

These game critics who get their asses kicked are just stupid. You see a bunch of spear-thingys lying around and DUH! you probably will need them soon. You enter a big-ass room with high ceilings and gee, you think there might be something big waiting for you? I can understand a noob not getting that, but someone whose played lots of games should recognize the patterns and identify the logic.

And I missed the naysayers on Kotaku. Whatever. I don't give a shit about the scariness. Games like this never scare me anyways. At best they startle or creep me out. I like Dead Space for it's setting, atmosphere, and peripheral story elements.

True that on the combat strategy. I loved Dead Space for the knowledge and applied understanding you'd use in your environment to evade enemies and keep on top of them all, it's the best combat in any game like this I've played.

I had one battle in the first game that honestly lasted about 5 minutes start to finish, constantly battling off enemies and tactically retreating when it got too hot- and the last blow to the last enemy was a punt to a creeper who had jumped onto me and started nibbling me- a punt straight into one of the faulty grav-panels. She exploded all over the room, and I felt goddamn badass :P

Played Amnesia, HotChops? I just fucking freaked out from some of that shit, and I don't usually get too scared by horror games. Maybe I'll make a thread for it actually.

No, and I'm afraid I can't w/o a gaming PC. I've seen it mentioned a couple times on this forum lately, but I just now youtube'd it.

Generally, I'm not much of a survival horror fan, but Amnesia sounds pretty good. I really like the idea of no weapons. I'm also a fan of any game that lets you go crazy. Eternal Darkness is one of my favorite games.
