A Thread of Missed Experiences: Games You Missed in 2021

It's been a long year and I don't know about you but there's a laundry list of games that I've been meaning to play, but for one reason or another, just haven't been able to find the time (or console in some cases) to actually play them.

What games from 2021 that you most regret not getting around to? I'll go first.

Deathloop - PS5

Deathloop (and the game below) just aren't available on a console I own. It sucks, but I'm sure as hell not in a position to spend £500 on a console for just one game, and as such, I'll wait for this to hit Gamepass in 2022.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Unlike Deathloop, I doubt I'll play this any time soon. Which is a real shame because this is the perfect game for me at the moment. Something I can kick back and relax with; no stress, just colourful fun from beginning to end.

Inscription - PC

I'll be honest, I don't know much about this game but *everyone* seems to be falling over themselves to talk about how insane this game is. I'm getting some big Obra-Din vibes off of the discourse around it. I imagine it'll make the hop over to consoles at some point, but until then I'll patiently wait.

Back 4 Blood - PC, XBOX, PS5

Back 4 Blood is available in places that I play games. Unfortunately the big reasons for my wanting to play it is also the main reason why I haven't played it. My life just doesn't fit into this sort of game anymore....but if it did I'd probably have had an amazing time playing this game with my friends.

Moncage - PC, Mobile

Finally we've got Moncage, a little indie puzzle box game that again, just isn't available in places where I play games. It's coming, but it's not here just yet. Maybe 2022 will be kinder to me in this regard.

------

And there we have it. My list of the games I most regret missing in 2021. A 'Potential' game of the year list of sorts. What makes your list?

When I looked at this thread I thought I'd played most of the game I wanted to this year, and wasn't going to really have much of a list, but boy was I wrong.

The story for all of them is basically the same, I wanted to play it but other things took priority. "Regret" is a strong word, but these are the ones I wish I would have gotten around to.

Avengers* - Mixed reviews, GaaS, and the fact that I just didn't have much fun with the demo all contributed to me skipping this, but I still feel it calling to me.

Biomutant - Also mixed reviews, but it's just so colorful and pretty, and I love the warrior rodent creatures, I want to try it out.

Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes - I held off because the previous DPA games have been misses, but I've heard good things about this one.

The Forgotten City* - Looks like just a cool little time-loop puzzle game, started out as a Skyrim mod.

It Takes Two* - This one is required coop, and I wasn't sure enough that my wife would like it to justify spending the money on it, but I've heard it's fantastic and would like to give it a shot.

Outriders* - Another one with mixed reviews, but I was interested in it from the announcement, and I'd still like to give it a shot.

Psychonauts 2* - I really liked the first one, but was never able to finish it because of the jankiness (even for the time), so even though it's on PC Game Pass I just never made the time for it. Plus I always hesitate to player newer stuff on PC cause I know the console version is better than my PC can do.

Sable* - Another smaller indie game I've had my eye on, but just hasn't been able to break through.

SMTV - I completely love Persona, which makes me want to try this out, but I've heard it's way harder, and lacks the social link stuff, so it never quite makes it to the top of my pile.

Scarlet Nexus - This game just looks fun, but again, mixed reviews, and JRPGs are hit or miss with me, so I've been hesitating.

Solar Ash - It's beautiful, and from what I can tell from trailers the gameplay is appealing to me, but Hyper Light Drifter was so damn hard, and that combined with the price tag ($40!?) has kept me away.

Tales of Arise - Same story as Scarlet Nexus, basically, except without the mixed reviews, but adding in a checkered history between me and Tales games.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon* - I've tried a couple of the other Yakuza games and the brawling wasn't really my thing, but I've heard great things about this one and I'm hoping the switch to turn-based combat will make me like it more.\

*Nearly half of these are on Game Pass, so once my Xbox gets here I may give more of them a go.

@danielpholt I 100% get that it's not worth it to buy an entire console for just a couple of games, but goddamn you're missing out on Deathloop and Ratchet. I'm glad you'll at least be able to play the former later this year.

If I could dedicate as much time as I used to to games, I'd throw the cash down in the knowledge that I'd have more to look forward to in the future, but atm that sort of money just doesn't make sense when I've also got work and family stuff.

As for the games in your list, Biomutant is a game I'm probably going to play when it hits gamepass/goes sub £10 in a year or two. Everything about it looks cool, and I've heard it's fine. Fine is um...fine.

House of Ashes is my favourite entry into that franchise. They've perfected their formulae IMO.

The Forgotten City is one that I just couldn't get into when I got around to it a few months ago. That being said, I've still got the itch, and I can see myself going back in. That's what happened with Outer Wilds and it ended up becoming one of my favourite gaming experiences to date.

It Takes Two fits into a similar slot to that of Back 4 Blood for me. Super interested in trying it, I just don't have a means of playing it.

Don't you have an Xbox? It Takes Two is on Game Pass.

As far as the rest, they're on my Gamefly queue, so I'll get to them eventually. In fact Scarlet Nexus just shipped today.

Sorry, I have the means I just don't have the co-op partner. Which is why it's similar to B4B to me. All the will in the world I can't get my brothers interested in playing anything that isn't Rocket League or Call of Duty.

Cool thread! I probably missed some stuff and I went through a list filtered for PC releases only so it's possible some of these weren't actually 2021 releases but late ports that I forgot about.

I split these in two categories. First, the games that I really wanted to play at launch but couldn't justify buying (whether due to lack of time, money or because I knew I wouldn't play them anytime soon):

Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Tales of Arise
Guardians of the Galaxy
Psychonauts 2
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

What makes these different is that once I got over the initial launch FOMO, I kinda forgot about them. I still want to play them all but at this point I'll just wait for deep discounts. Also, in the case of Great Ace Attorney, I really want to finish the original trilogy first.

Then there's the games I genuinely wish I could've played:

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker - I got back into FFXIV last summer and intended to keep playing so I could be caught up on the MSQ in time for Endwalker's launch but that didn't happen. I stopped midway through Heavensward, the first expansion, and didn't return to the game until this month. I put over 100 hours into it this month alone and I'm still only on the second expansion, Stormblood. After that there's the post-Stormblood content, then there's Shadowbringers and finally the post-Shadowbringers content. So I'm looking at easily another 150+ hours before I can even begin Endwalker. Maybe by this time next year I'll be caught up lol.

Deathloop - I love Arkane's games but for some reason I never buy them at launch and always feel bad about it. It doesn't help that for the longest time it wasn't really clear what Deathloop even was. The initial reveal trailer made it look like some kind of multiplayer deal and none of the marketing leading up to launch really cleared things up for me. I have it on Steam now, though, so it'll be one of the first games I play once my new PC is up and running.

Hitman 3 - Contrary to what you might believe, this one didn't actually come out on PC in 2021. Or at least, it might as well not have as far as I'm concerned because I'm not buying anything on the EGS. In my case, it sort of has the opposite effect where I'll forget most of these games even came out and by the time they hit Steam I've moved on. So I don't end up buying them until much later, when they're dirt cheap. Great job, Tim!

Oh and I guess Kingdom Hearts and FFVIIR are also in the same situation here but Square-Enix has insane pricing (and is getting worse!) so I likely would not have bought them right away even if they had launched on Steam.

Nioh 2 - This one was simply down to knowing how much of a time commitment it would be. I loved the first one but completing it took me almost 200 hours. I really wish I had had the time to play it this year but I had other shit I wanted to do. I'll buy it when I'm ready to play it immediately or when the price drops into impulse purchase range.

Nier Replicant - I made a conscious decision to drop original PS3 version and this was back when I hated doing that and forced myself to finish basically every game I started, so that should tell you something. Nier Automata is legitimately one of my favorite games that I've played in the decade since, though, so I really want to give it another shot. But it's still too pricy for a game I can't be sure I'll even like.

Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne HD Remaster - This one (along with the PC port of P4G, which I stopped midway through) was just down to time. Gonna have to find time for it before SMTV drops on PC, which could happen as soon as 6 months from now.

bonus entry: Monster Hunter World: Iceborne - Not a 2021 release but I really wanted to play it before Rise's PC launch and that's not going to happen. I'm glad I held off, though, because now I'll get to play it on my new PC at a decent framerate with G-Sync enabled (assuming Samsung ever repairs and sends my monitor back...)

lol, that's what happens to me with almost every game I'm excited for but don't end up getting at launch. I'm like "well I've already waited this long..."

Went through a list of every game released in 2021 (though not all games actually came out 2021), only writing down those I actually want(ed) to play though. :P

Ys IX Monstrum Nox - Still have my DS copy of Legacy of Ys: Books I & II, a series I want to get into but haven't had the time to do so, also have Origin and Oath of Felgana on PC.

Nioh 2 - Haven't even played the first one lol. :P

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV - Trails in the Sky silently judges me from my Steam library... Another series that seems like it'd consume all my time if I got into it, still want to play it though. :P

Monster Hunter Rise - Yet another game series I want to get into, probably could drop hundreds of hours into these games though, so been kinda hesitant to start.

Record of Lodoss War - Don't have much of a reason for not playing this one, just kinda missed when it came out and now it's in the "I'll play it when I play it" list. :P

Nier Replicant - Don't really have the time or the right mindset for a game like this right now, def want to check it out at some point though.

Ninja Gaiden Master Collection - Had some technical issues on PC when it came out, and some still persist, that kinda pushed me away long enough that I forgot it came out this year. :P

Scarlet Nexus - Got it at the same time as Sekiro, that meant it got pushed into my backlog immediately.

Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut - Ended up getting Sekiro and Scarlet Nexus instead. :P One of those games I really want to play, just got to have enough time to do so. :P

Tales of Arise - ANOTHER Series I want to get into, when time allows it lol.

Lots of games in long running series lol. :P

Oh right, that was this year. I decided to wait until Crossbell is out to continue with the series so it's on hiatus for at least another year or so. But then I'll finally be able to get up to date without skipping any of the games!

Oh right, duh. I'm going to try ITT with my wife, but I don't have a lot of confidence she'll want to stick with it.

Another thing, I'm not really sure that I'd want to play that game with my significant other. It's about a couple admitting they're probably better off alone right. Maybe it speaks to my own issues, but I don't need that directly in mine and my partners face 🙃

I haven't gotten around to playing it yet but I can't imagine a game about marriage that requires you to play with a second person and encourages playing with your spouse would end up with them deciding it's better to get divorced.

In which case (like Ethan said), it's going to go the other way and the couple that clearly aren't right for one another are going to 'give it another go' and show their daughter that sometimes, families should stay together because........

That would be quite the twist though!

I also can't imagine that anyone would go on stage at an award show about video games and shout "Fuck the Oscars!" and yet...
