CrowKnow
I've got a spare beta invite if anyone wants to test the trading card thing. Kinda disappointed with how the system is set up. Each game has its own deck and you can get half the deck max as random drops. That means you'll have to trade/buy from the marketplace if you ever want to craft a badge. With F2P games like TF2 and DOTA2 you get 1 card drop for every ~$9 you spend but, it doesn't seem to count any of the money you've spent prior to beta. Also Cyber Rat and Mastrix are high level than me /shakes fist Edited May 21, 2013 by CrowKnow
Eleven
Steam Game Sharing in the near future? http://www.vg247.com/2013/06/19/steam-game-sharing-feature-appears-in-client-code/ Thank you Xbox One? deanb
Or..you know the EU legislation to similar effect last year (also specifically on sharing PS3 has had it since launch, just 5 people not 10)
toxicitizen
Yeah, there's no way we'd be hearing about it this quickly if it had anything to do with the Xbox One. This is most likely as a result of what Dean mentioned. This would be a really cool feature to have. Looking forward to a more official unveiling and getting more details about how it would actually work.
Thursday Next
Or..you know the EU legislation to similar effect last year (also specifically on sharing PS3 has had it since launch, just 5 people not 10) Those 5 got cut down to 2 iirc. Eleven
Yeah, down to 2. And you have to share your account, but no limit to who's playing who. However, the share is controlled by the friend, as he has to go in to his PS3 and stop the share. Otherwise, you're screwed out of your other PS3 allocation. My friends and I did that with DLCs though, especially on Rock Band songs, as we play together anyway. It was a very nice workaround. In any case, I was mainly kidding about Xbox One. It's very good news no matter who did it first.
Mister Jack
You have to admit the timing is pretty funny, though. Right after Major Nelson implied that Xbox One is better than steam because you can't share steam games, this comes out.
Vecha
Hope the steamsharing is more than 2. 5 would be nice....10 or more would be perfect. And yes, Fuck you Microsoft. I don't care if it's hypocritical/ironic that many will praise steam/valve for this. Put in a fucking offline mode you dickweeds.
Mister Jack
I would say the Xbone's game sharing was a good thing if I understood how it fucking worked.
TheMightyEthan
You register Game X to your account, put it in your game share. People who are registered as your XBL family members can play any game in your share, including Game X. You can play Game X whenever you want, even if someone is already using the share. Any one family member can play Game X at any given time, whether you are playing or not. Multiple family members cannot play Game X at the same time, whether you are playing or not. The only thing that I'm unclear about is whether one family member can play Game X at the same time another is playing Game Y, or if it's only one family member at a time using any part of your game share. Eleven
Hope the steamsharing is more than 2. 5 would be nice....10 or more would be perfect. The way they should do this, is to just enable sharing per game. None of that shared library with up to 10 friends. If you share the game to someone, you can't share it with someone else. They could choose to let you play it while the share is active, or not let you play it. I think not allowing you to play while someone else is using your copy is the way to do it, and it's fair. It's sharing, not receiving an extra copy. Based on the messages they found, it looks like it will be this way. It won't allow you to play, but you can forcibly kick them out. But but but!!! This implies some sort of online connection being required so that people can be kicked out.
TheMightyEthan
An online connection being required for the person receiving the game loan is fine with me (at least if it will tolerate short lapses of connection). It's certainly better than not being able to loan them at all.
Thursday Next
Precisely, it's a cost benefit. I get to borrow a game for nothing. The payback is that I have to be connected while I do it. There's a clear value proposition there. Contrast with Xbox One essentially saying that you have really just paid to borrow their games from them. Mr. GOH!
If I were a publisher or developer, I would want to limit digital game sharing, even the time-sharing eleven suggests. Doubly so if it's enabled by a platform that routinely offers massive discounts on my games. I mean, c'mon; I've gotten games for $15 that were released mere months previously for $60. deanb
Eh, share a game, person decides they want to own it for themselves. Be it just to have in their collection or due to it having some form of MP they'd want to play with the original owner. Publishers are much more likely to win than lose. The cheap games already make them much much more than otherwise anyway.
TheMightyEthan
Not to mention that if this is in response to the EU rules then the publishers may not have a choice.
Mr. GOH!
EU requires that digital copies be lendable? That's new to me.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, until this my understanding was just that it requires them to be resellable, but a bunch of people have said this is related to those rules and I don't know enough about them to know whether that's true or not. Thursday Next
German case only stated that a customer may sell a software license on. They said nothing about publishers having to facilitate that sale. So yes, you are allowed to sell your steam games on. But the practicalities mean that you are unable to. Sort of like how you are allowed to sell your tattoos to anyone else, there's just no way to actually do it and the tattoo artist is under no obligation to remove the tattoo from your arm and put it on your friend's. EDIT: I don't think the courts will force publishers to make digital resellable. If they do, publishers will jump to an MTX Free to Play model all the quicker. I could be wrong though and Valve may just be getting ahead of the curve, they might think this is a good idea. If you can share you game with others one at a time then as Dean says it could encourage further sales. I do honestly believe that people will pay for games if you give them the option, this is just a way to introduce them to a game and then let them show their appreciation by paying for it afterwards. Eleven
When you buy those Windows software, does it require Steam in any way? There's a program on sale that I'd like to buy for my work machine but I don't want Steam installed there.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I'm not sure. WIth some games you have to install via Steam but then you can open it without Steam.
Mister Jack
Steam, couldn't you at least give me a fucking heads up before you take all your community servers offline for maintenance?
