excel_excel
Argh Steam. Look I've got loads of games on Steam and their deals are fantastic. But their new game prices can fuck right off. €50 for Dead Space 2?? I can buy a retail boxed copy for €33 on Zavvi. Their? Sorry, but what makes you think Valve are setting the prices? Also major lulz @ that steam meme pic. So true. Ahh I guess your right but still....they are the ones delivering the service. I mean while I know they aren't setting the prices I still blame Sony for the ridiculous prices for the games on PSN. They accept the prices Edited January 23, 2011 by excel_excel
deanb
Well see it's mostly Steam Euro users have the issue with. As Excel stated he can get them much cheaper elsewhere. If you can get them much cheaper elsewhere then it's most likely not purely the publishers setting that price. There are still many many things about Steam's operations that are yet to be uncovered. The whole Euro thing with Steam is retarded anyway. Steams the top dog in PC DD, DD in PC now accounts for over half the market. PC gaming is huge in Europe, some countries like Germany eclipsing console gaming, yet they're being bled dry on Steam prices. It's fucking retarded. Unless it's becuase they know that they're more likely to get PC gamers using the Euro so put in the markup to increase profits in that area?
deanb
Not entirely appropriate for this thread but: Update to the Beta version of Steam (oh then play a game n hit F12)
TheForgetfulBrain
They're changing Steam again? Didn't they just do that? Also, weird about Euro Steam pricing issues. Steam is kind of amazing with prices in the US. Unless you're buying at release? I'm trying not to buy games new on Steam anymore, since in like six months they drop so damn far in price, and it's all technically 'new' on Steam. It's just those stupid pre-order bonuses (that are now a mainstay) that get me.
deanb
No, they actually run betas pretty often, like sometimes a couple a month. Just small tweaks before general release. Rarely unstable too, so always worth checking for any new betas and hopping on before the rest of the pack.
deanb
I guess this is quick becoming the Steam thread. Anywho worth a read: http://www.forbes.co...ine-mayhem.html It also gives sale figures for HL2, which at this moment in time are 6.5million "not including Steam". That article pins it now at 12million, moving it up to 3rd best selling PC game after Sims 1 and Sims 2 (it's kind of on par with Wow, but that's 12million subs and unknown amount of sales) Also in '05 Steam was guestimated to make $77million/year with $55million in profit. We're 5 years on, I think it's making quite a bit more than that, especially since it's valued at $2-4billion. It's basically a history of Valve, things we know and snippets we don't. (e.g I assume most folks know Gabe is/was a Microsoft Millionaire, which is how he could make Valve and keep it independent.) They did gloss over this aspect of Steams creation (well that adds another year onto Episode 3 development. I DON'T REGRET IT ONE BIT!!!) Anyway worth a quick read.
Bizzenya
Dean, your explanation of the creation of Steam is priceless. Poor guy.

deanb
Yeah if you're getting it I'd be fast. It's pretty damn good, certainly one of the top 10 games of '09 easy. I recommend playing it with a 360 pad on PC. It'll plug n play, it's just one of those kind of games. edit: While browsing my Dropbox behold pre-2010 steam:
Mal
I got it just in time before Just Cause come on. Now to figure out how to get my 360 controller to work with my computer. It detects it as a 360 controller but then, nothing.
deanb
What type is it? Wired? or wireless. If it's wireless the charge cable is useless. MS gimped it so it only does a power connection not data. If it's wired you'll probably find it's done stuff (like if it's all lit up). Just start the game and you should be able to play with it no problem. At the very least if you're on Vista/Win7. Win XP came before 360 pads so you need to grab a driver. Cyber Rat
Oh, poo. I was hoping JC2 would be on sale the last day so there was a chance of payday coming along :/
Mal
Meh. The wireless. Oh well. Not like my battery pack is functional at all now. It requires the wire for me to even play. Damn you cheap, broken battery pack. (one reason why I really slowed down on playing on the 360)
Mister Jack
As much as I hate buying accessories, MS did make a wireless receiver to let you use wireless 360 controllers with your PC.
deanb
IT does cost more than a wired controller though, and not shy of the wireless controllers price too. (unless they've drastically dropped them in price recently. Wireless pad for £35, Receiver for £25 and wired pad for £15)
TheMightyEthan
Malicious, a wired 360 pad is a very good investment. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wired-Controller-Black/dp/B003ZSN600/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1297821908&sr=8-
deanb
Though'd i'd suggest shopping around. But yeah, you've got your own pad, which 360 owning friends love you for, and it works for quite a large range of PC titles too.
Mal
Doh, fine, I am in the market for a better PC remote anyways and well, hard to beat a 360 controller.

P4: Gritty Reboot
HL2 Episode 2 is $2 for the midweek deal right now.
deanb
HL2 Episode 2 is $2 for the midweek deal right now. Yeah, few of us are kind of curious on that. How many folks have HL2, but not Episode 2 (not really a question since yesterday I checked steam and 78 have HL2 n 68 have Episode 2 (out of 97)) You'd of thought if they were making one HL2 game for sale, they'd do them all. Doesn't make much sense to only do one. Not many folks to take advantage of that.
Mal
I actually don't have any HL2 games and I never quite beat the original HL. I got close but then mutant baby Buddha thing come and ruin my junk. Edited February 23, 2011 by MaliciousH
