How Important is a Gaming Interest in Your Significant Other?

Whether you're single, married, engaged, or just seeing somebody, everyone here has to have an opinion on the matter of an interest in gaming from a significant other (or potential significant other). How important is it? Would it be a dealbreaker if she/he utterly hated them?

I'm almost certain that it's unrelated but the best relationship I've had my partner didn't hate them but generally saw them as a waste of time, whereas my gamer/anime girlfriend was a complete pain in the ass and went sour very quickly.

I had a girlfriend once, about six years ago. We didn't talk much about gaming, really. She didn't seem to care much for it apart from a few casual things like The Sims and the like.

 

It would be nice to be with someone that shared an interest in the same hobby...

I voted: It doesn't matter one bit. I could be with someone who utterly hates them.

My ex had a hobby I didn't like (fishing), but I just let him be - as long as he enjoys it, right? It should be the other way around as well.

That said, gaming together is (almost) always fun. It's a plus, but it's not a dealbreaker.

There's more like keeping an open mind than openly hating them. The fourth option was meant to imply that he or she would probably make fun of or roll their eyes at your hobby, but in your opinion they could still have other qualities that would make up for it.

Ah, okay. In that case I'd still go with option 4, it's still not a dealbreaker. If my significant other hated my hobby, that would be his problem. Gaming does not define who I am, it's just part of my interests.

I gotta be honest and say I'd prefer someone at least KINDA into it for the reason that...I am not a very interesting person when discussing most other topics. In my real life I am not a very good conversationalist. I need topics I am actually interested in. Games aren't the ONLY one, but it's obviously my biggest hobby.

 

Also I hate naggers, so option four is not even a possibility for me. I cannot stand people who nag me, especially when I'm trying to enjoy my free time.

I need someone who's at least open minded, even if they don't personally care for it. If they absolutely hate it then they're going to hate that I spend so much time doing it, and harass/nag me about it, etc. Just not a good situation.

I prefer someone who's into gaming at least as much as I am. It's much easier to take an interest in her hobbies if I'm interested in her hobbies. If she shares at least 2 hobbies with me, I consider her compatible enough for me to make an effort to get to know her. Personality (compatibility) is very important to me.

I would say that it is not a good idea to date people who hate your #1 hobby.
