TheMightyEthan
RESURRECT! Halo. I recently played Anniversary and loved every second of it. I can't even begin to count the number of times I played through the original version.
Strangelove
How long is SMB3? I dont remember, but ive beat that game at least 50 times in my life.
Battra92
How long is SMB3? I dont remember, but ive beat that game at least 50 times in my life. I don't quite get how someone would think SMB3 would have no replay value. I continue to play that game to this day. It's like saying there's no replay value in Checkers. Strangelove
Right. I mistook short for replay value. My bad. Its really hard to think what warrants "Bad" replay value. Technically any game can be played over and over again if someone really likes it.
Cyber Rat
The Checkers comparison would be more appropriate for all the puzzle games people keep mentioning (like Tetris). SMB3 doesn't really give you incentive to play it beyond being a good game.
TheMightyEthan
I think the general consensus is that there's no replay value if subsequent playthroughs don't give you anything new as compared to your first one. It's the same every single time, but you keep playing it over and over again anyway.
P4: Gritty Reboot
I've beaten Diddy Kong Racing on the 64 probably a dozen times. Only takes me a few hours now; it's like a comfort food. I've also played a lot of Halo: CE just because the combat is pretty enjoyable, even though I rarely play the online and the level design is often balls. Strangelove
Halo CE was my Goldeneye. I played Goldeneye a lot too growing up, but it wasnt until Halo CE when I realized how awesome splitscreen fps with friends could be. Love that game.
TheMightyEthan
I don't really see a problem with Halo's level design. I think the worst that can be said about it is that it's often boring by today's standards,
P4: Gritty Reboot
Not to get too off-topic, but the outdoor levels were mostly fantastic in Halo:CE. The indoor levels were at once labyrinthine and restrictively linear, as well as repetitive. The level design had shining moments like the assault on the control room and the early sections on the Halo, as well as low points like some of the Halo's interior structures and the Covenant ships. Still a fine game though, and to be more topical, compellingly replayable even though it offers little new each time.
excel_excel
Phoenix Wright series. I've played the first 3 at least 3 times each to completion. I just love the story, characters and dialogue and love experiencing those heart pounding Objection moments again and again. Also Mystical Ninja 2 Starring Goemon for the N64, I just loved its 2D platforming and music. OH THE MUSIC ARGH. Plus those robot battles. TheMightyEthan
lol, Battra, I can't help but feel that you're intentionally missing the point of the thread. *Edit* - Basically it's a list of games that we enjoy SO MUCH that we continue to play them over and over again despite the fact that there is absolutely nothing new in subsequent playthroughs. Because the general, "objective" meaning of "replay value" is that you get something out of repeat playthroughs that you didn't get out of the original. Mal
Final Fantasy IX. OBJECTION! I argue that there is replay value in IX because you can attempt to play the game and beat Osma in x amount of time to get a certain sword. Forgot the time limit and what the sword is called. Hell, I recall hearing that it is pretty crappy but... it is still replay value. No matter how small. Disclosure, I never attempted it since it is balls hard to do.

Johnny
Isn't the title of this thread quite a contradiction? If someone is enjoying playing through a game several times, then surely it has replay value to that person? Even if the replay value only stems from the game being good enough to experience more than once, I think that should still count.

Johnny
Sorry, I just have a problem with the way "replay value" is being talked about a lot in gaming today.
Waldorf and Statler
I honestly can't remember the last game I actually went out of my way to replay when it had no new game + or unlockable. I am too story-driven in my games and unless the story had a huge well-written romance among the many things it brought to the table, I am not interested. example: I tried replaying Brutal Legend. I am one of the few people who didn't entirely dislike the combat in that game. But I couldn't get past a certain section before lack of interest kicked in. Been there, done that syndrome. SomTervo
Ico/ Shadow of the Colossus, even though both do have little unlockables and things that change. I still play them just for the playing of them. So relaxing and somehow cathartic. Max Payne. The gameplay is barely innovated at all, and the story is always the same (except for an apparent special ending for doing MP2 on hardest, which I should probably get round to doing as it's one of my favourite games). I still just play it for the atmosphere and the fun. Batman: Arkham Asylum. I've completed the game about 5 times, not even to unlock or collect everything, but just because I adore the progression and atmosphere. I 100%'ed it on my second playthrough. I felt more like the Bat playing that than Arkham City tbqh. I do think we need to define our terms a bit, but just to make the distinction between 'replay value' in the design of the game, and 'replay value' for a person who has a soft spot for a game. Hot Heart
You know, I always figured it should've been defined in the original post. OH WAIT IT IS.
SomTervo
Fair point, I just noticed that several people seemed to be arguing about it currently and it didn't seem resolved. I forgot the OP said that.
fuchikoma
With no special replay bonuses? Wipeout XL (2097 for Brits/Europeans. Retired. Mostly 1997-2005. Easily an all time favourite.) The beatmania series. The DJ Max Portable series. The Touhou Project series. Fighting games. Namely DoA2, but lately more Blazblue CS and SFIV. Forza 3. The Impossible Game. Really, I'm the kind of guy who'll play a fun game, usually a very short game, practically forever, but a long game just won't get finished no matter how good it is.
