3DS

Like with the Wii, I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that say it looks interesting and worth a buy, but then they'll decide that there aren't enough good games on it.

My prediction is that six months after you buy one, you'll be making quips that it's "collecting dust."

That can be said for all game systems though. It always depends on the games. I had no plans to buy and Xbox 360 but tons of great games came out for it really quick so I jumped on the bandwagon. I think there will be ample supply of games for the system and unlike the Wii I doubt it'll be entirely shovelware. The Wii suffers because of a lack of parity with other consoles. The 3DS won't be in that same boat.

  • 2 weeks later...

The recent news on the battery life really bummed me out on the idea. I'm interested in 3D gaming, but not so much on a small dinky screen. Not many must have games for me really. Still got the DS library to play through first. Which I guess would be the main reason for liking the 3DS. Cheaper DS games.

I wouldn't worry much about battery life -- N. has always calculated more conservatively and has a good history of taking care of that. It will be similar to DSi, I guess, but I wasn't able to verify it this time though :)

As for games, there is no must-buy there for me and the 3D effect is nice but not enough to make me buy this system. I will probably have a look at Pro Evo (at least I think a 3D version comes out) to see if it maybe changes my mind. Some Street Fighter fans will probably also fall victim to temptation there.

Just googling "DSi battery life" gave me this:

• Battery Life

Nintendo DSi: The lowest brightness (9-14 hrs), low brightness (8-12 hours), medium brightness (6-9 hours), high brightness (4-6 hours), highest brightness(3-4 hours)

Nintendo DS Lite: The lowest brightness (15-19 hrs), low brightness (10-15 hours), high brightness (7-11 hours), highest brightness(5-8 hours)

Which is much better than the 3DS estimates, which are at 3 hours on low brightness. I wouldn't be so optimistic if I were you.

I'm waiting for the lite.

Don't believe anything they say on google tv :P

But honestly, DSi with wireless connection and everything else switched on to max will probably be somewhere around 5-6 hours (again, I can't confirm because I don't have one). I wouldn't be surprised if the 3DS was around those values minus 10-20%. We'll see, I guess, but I know Nintendo as very conservative. Let's say they like to be wrong to their own advantage, if that makes any sense.

I find the 3DS design quite ugly though. I think I will wait until Lite/XXL/3DS/Phone/nPad as well.

Edited for retardedness in spelling.

I think it's too similar to the DS. I get they're going for familiarity. But I reckon it'll work against them with people just assuming it's another iteration of the DS. The Gameboy, then Color, then Advance all looked distinctly different, then with the SP n Micro too. Also the naming was easy enough to figure out what was a new version n what was a remodelling.

But the 3DS is named like a DS, it looks like a DS. But it isn't the DS.
