Games that disappointed you

RDR.

Halo: Reach (3 was so much bettar, they fucked up, should have stuck to the books story to a T, still adore the online though).

FFXIII (XII was better).

GTAIV.

Bioshock 2.

Far Cry 2.

Half Life 2.

MGS2.

I could go on.

Impossibly high standards?

No? o.o

I mean, I liked MGS4, MGS3, and MGS. A lot of people hated FFXIII; some people don't think RDR is the coming of Jesus, and Far Cry 2 was atrocious.

GTAIV is iffy, but in the end I didn't like it too much, and Bioshock 2 after playing it a few times I feel like it was a slight cash in; while Infinity looks more like a true sequel to the Bioshock universe. Plus, in this generation so many games are so alike others, it's hard to not be disappointed by a game.

So far Castlevania: Lords of Shadow and Reach are my favorite games this year is that gives you a better view of my standards (even though Reach is on the list, I replay it for the co-op and online).

Alan Wake, FF13, RDR

I agree with that on AW and RDR.

Alan Wake- I still really enjoyed it, but as a game it was quite a failure. The lack of emergence was the main killer for me; it would have been plentiful if the game had been open world (same for Mirror's Edge), and the game mechanics just got so boring so fast. If they had added anything to mix it up- generative fire, more enemy types, harder survival- the game would have been so much better. The story and later levels were still good, but overall it got too repetetive.

Also the two DLC's are honestly, so far superior gameplaywise, it's not even funny. They could have cut out Chapter 2 and 3 from the retail game and put in the two DLC chapters, and I guarantee it would have improved the game tenfold.

I wanted to love RDR, but I felt too tied down to the mini-game and living-through-the-map mechanics to really get into the Western world. The game distanced me from itself. I also felt the pace was far too fast, and that if they had slowed it down and made the game more about challenging gameplay rather than mini-game abundance it would have been better.

Also God of War III. It's hard for me to define- but it just didn't give me the wow-factor that II did, and I was really expecting that. Probably my expectations were too high. Still a pretty damn good game.

@lamaquaman: That is a pretty intense list sir, I'm taking it you still enjoyed a lot of those games but just felt at least a bit disillusioned with them? Hopefully it wasn't full on disappointment on every one :P

I've found with lots of games these days changing your approach to the experience or fiddling with options can make them a lot more enjoyable. On Far Cry 2- I found turning off the music and HUD, and playing the game as if it was No Country for Old Men, increased the tension and enjoyment so damn much. I really like it now- plus the game get's significantly better after the 50-60% mark, like with Alan Wake. Also on GTAIV I found turning off most of the HUD and playhing the game as if it's an interactive movie really makes the experience more enjoyable. As a more arcadey game like GTAIII it's almost a total failure.

Soul Calibur IV

Played SCII to death on the GameCube. The absence of Link and being forced to play with a PS3 controller might have had something to do with it.

Red Dead Redemption

Not a terrible game, but the trailers got me way too hyped for what was essentially GTA4 with horses.

Prototype

I thought it looked very bland and uninteresting, but it was much worse than that.

Final Fantasy XIII

The world felt too lifeless and restricted, and the characters annoyed me too much.

The thread seems a little at odds. The title is about 'disappointing games' yet the description is about games that SUCKED.

I would say something sort of felt disappointing about RDR and other games, but I wouldn't say they sucked.

I vote we deduct ALL Mister Jack's TAY points. It's the only solution.

Haha, yes. Some of they weren't total failures, but I was just really looking forward to the game, and when I played it I was just highly disappointed. In most cases, the dev couldn't live up to the hype they built in me for the sequel, but a few I thought were genuinely terrible (Far Cary Twooo, FFXIII D':).

Look for the Zero Punction "Like God of War but..." Stamp.

Yeah, it was like GOW, but I don't care. Any game can be like something else, but it if does it well, and I enjoy it's fine. The atmosphere was great, the levels and architecture were gorgeous, and the ending had a massive plot twist I never saw coming. Killer monster designs too. Everyone I talk to say they didn't play it because it was a GOW rip-off. Those people, are missing out.
