FFVI had, to me, the best cast of characters, the most mature story, the best villain, and some of the most memorable moments in the series.

FFVI was my favorite for a long time even after VII and VIII had come out but now looking back I think that I'm the most nostalgic about VII and it's definitely the most influential of the series so I picked it. I thought the second half of VI was lacking. VIII would rank number 3 for me. I loved the story and the setting but hated the battle system.

Well yeah VII is easily the most influential, but I made my choice based on what I thought made the best game, not which one had the biggest influence. And I just could not get into VIII. Hated the characters, hated the battle system, and the story made no sense once Ultimecia became involved.

 

Explain to me what in god's name there is to be gained from time compression, because the game did not do a very good job of that.

Having the true villain appear at the very end of the game is actually pretty true to form for Final Fantasy though. I was just into the whole emo before it was emo phase of FF and I liked the darker nature of the games.

Oh no, it's not that she appeared suddenly that bothered me. I can handle that, although I still don't like it because I feel the best villains are ones that have time to establish themselves. What bothered me about her is that her motives just didn't make sense. She was just doing it for the evulz, if you will. I can swallow some ultimate force of darkness who wants to destroy to the sake of it as an rpg end boss, but Ultimecia was supposed to be somewhat humanized, and as such I expected her goals to have some meaning to them.

i don't think i can vote for my one favorite. it would feel wrong. i'd be lying if i didn't say i was a huge fan of VII, though i'm completely admitting it's wonderfully nostalgia tinted. i did like the story, though, before they bastardized it with all that advent children shenanigans. i actually kind of liked how unfleshed out it was to begin with because i could make it what i wanted.

 

if i could see one game be remade it would be VI, because that game was mature and all kinds of wonderful. and let's face it, they've already remade the hell out of IV.

 

as for the later ff games i was actually very partial to XII. the gambit system actually allowed for some nice customization and balthier is probably one of my favorite characters in a videogame ever.

 

yeah, see and i was going to try to truncate this but i can't leave without saying IX was quite badass as well. i loved IX, they really injected a lot of humor into it that was pretty standard throughout the previous games but really didn't make it into later ones.

Yeah, true. FFVIII was not the best of the series but I think the bad guy being "for the evulz" was probably because the main focus was on Squall and Rhinoa. I do wish that Squall wasn't such a baby for the whole game.

I honestly can't vote... I've come to dislike pretty much all the Final Fantasy games.

 

Screw it, I'm just going to go with the one that I've played and enjoyed the most: FF IV

Well I brought up the point that when more than 50% of your series sucks that your series sucks in general.

I picked FF6 because i truly believe its the best one, possibly the best jrpg.

 

That being said, FF8 was and is still my favorite.

I went with VIII, just because of the nostalgia. It was possibly the first RPG I've ever played, and I just loved (almost) everthing about it. I've played it lots of times and I probably know every single bit of dialogue.

The music was GREAT and I would restart the game over and over to watch that first FMV.

 

And yes, Squall was a little bitch. But I loved him nonetheless.

 

It's probably not the best Final Fantasy when it comes to the battle system etc, but to me it's still the best.

Where's Final Fantasy Tactics on this list? Why are the Gameboy final fantasy games not included in this poll! They were fun! Especially Final Fantasy Legend! And don't give me this crap that it was just retitled under the Final Fantasy name for it's North American release!

 

ALSO: Are we going by the Japanese numbering of Final Fantasy games or the North American numbering of games, because that is HUGE. I demand clarity!

Final Fantasy IX. The story, the cuteness, the over world view? Played it recently and it's still my favorite Final Fantasy game ever. I invested a lot of time on it, as much as I loved the other ones this one still grabs me.

They're SaGa games, whose hit-or-miss nature has been very well documented.

 

They have their own little "best of" list, and it looks like this:

 

1. SaGa 3

2. Romancing SaGa 2

3. The Last Remnant (unofficially)

4 or 7. One thing that bugs me about the older FFs (yes, even 4 as much as I like it) is how you're forced to accept things with minimal plot and character development. Relationships especially. 7 was the first one to really expand on that sort of development so I do like my two favs for different reasons. Also, I don't think 7 has the best particular anything, it's just the best overall package in my eyes.

I'd guess from it going all the way from I to XIII with no gaps but MMO's that it's Jap numbering.

AFAIK you guys never got the proper II n III as anything until years later as II n III. and the NA numbering goes I, II, V, VI etc.?

but in North America, they still carry the Final Fantasy name. Not to go off-topic, but it's like Super Mario Brothers 2, in Japan it was a far different game than what we got in North America, which we later got as "The Lost Levels." For the North American version of SMB2, we got a revamped version of a game called Doki Doki Panic.

 

tl;dr version: It still has the Final Fantasy name.
