TCP
Personally, I feel that Kingdom Hearts style combat would of been the way to go. It has a menu system and its active. Just the sort of direction FF needs. However with Kingdm Hearts having tha system, FF just can't just take it. So fuck do I know how they can set a new feel. While I think XIII and XIII-2's battle systems were some of the best in the series, I wouldn't mind seeing a KH's like battle system in Final Fantasy, since that's the only good part of Kingdom Hearts (yep, I said that). Supposedly, Versus is suppose to have that sort of battle system, and I still think it'll be renamed FFXV.
Mal
Perhaps. I got pretty iffed about the change... about nine years ago so I never got to play it myself. I could try it now. My younger brother do have a copy. From what I seen though, the menu system may be a tad too clunky. Its workable though. Also, I sort of got priced out of it back then... and there was Halo to consider. Edited June 26, 2012 by MaliciousH
Strangelove
FFX-2 had the greatest battle system of all time!
Pojodin
iirc, trigger happy level 3 + cat nip = 200,000 damage per attack. Edited June 26, 2012 by Pojodin
Strangelove
And even then, Trema can still kill you if youre not quick on your toes.
Pojodin
Trema beat me way too many times. I never wanted to take the defensive approach when I was mowing everything else down.
deanb
FFX was late 2001 Edit: n I'm with FDS, ffxii had one of the better battle systems.
deanb
http://finalfantasyviipc.com/en http://www.youtube.com/watch?&v=qr4TgU4SKLc Thing is the specs suggest re-make, or some kind of HD-ification for it. But the fact they're still using FMVs from 1997, which looks shit by todays standard, and that there's no in-game footage or screenshots yet, suggests it's a straight up port of the original game. Which is hugely sucky, and don't really provide much of an incentive to buy the "new" game instead of just emulating the game or picking it up on PS3/PSP for a few quid. Strangelove
From what I remember, the translation is different on the pc version. I'm not sure if it's better or worse than the ps1 version though. The pc version also had some mods that made the characters look better. Strangelove
On another note: seriously, what the fuck is it with people and FF7? Kotaku just posted about the port not 7 minutes ago and it's already flooded with comments. I dont understand. I like the game too, but people get wet over it. Even the remake thing is kind of a meme now. I hope to god it never gets remade, just out of spite. There is absolutely nothing special about! Doesn't anybody notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!
deanb
I think there's a fair few folks have noted it's not exactly the second coming. But then that tends to gets shot down as "just hating on it cos it's popular". Visually it's terrible, the story is convulted, the materia system requires a fair bit of grinding. But for many it's their first final fantasy (it was the first released in Europe don't forget, and FFIV became FFII n all that stuff), so there's a strong amount of nostalgia for it.
Strangelove
So Europeans didnt get to play FF6 til the PS1 port? That sucks.
excel_excel
and the PS1 port has something off about the music, which was sucky. Its nostalgia though. Square Enix have kept VII alive in people's minds with all their different spin offs, not to mention Advent Children and its later Complete version. Strangelove
You should add FFX-2 while were at it.
deanb
FFS. Added it in. This is why I have an internal *groan* each time I see Yantelope has made a poll. To be frank, he sucks.
TCP
What about the Dissidia and Tactics games?! I demand they be added! Just kidding Dean. Supposedly a XIII-3 may be in the works. I have to say, I'm excited. Though I really hope this one stars Lightning. Maybe ditch the time traveling and just give us a well designed open world with XIII's battle system? Yes please! Also: apparently X HD is also a ways off. Square! You're making this more complicated than it needs to be, call up Sony, ask them how they did the God of War/Sly/Ico collections, and then give us X, X-2, and XII, sell it for 45 bones or whatever, and profit. You don't need to build the game up from scratch.
excel_excel
Are the Square Enix devs capable of making only one damn game at a time? Final Fantasy X HD is simple, send it to Bluepoint Studios. As for XIII-3.....can we just like give the XIII world a rest for now?
Waldorf and Statler
Why would they? The games are still selling decently, they already have the backstory and characters [create new ones], and they dont need to come up with a new universe. Basically they've sawed off all creativity and the wow-factor FF games bring, and decided to focus on XIII as their current gen Final Fantasy. The amount of time it would take them to bring a new Final Fantasy title to brand new consoles is probably not worth the wait. Honestly they're lucky they have a studio churning out quality titles, and it's a Western one.
Strangelove
I have a feeling this is going to become the norm for a lot of Japanese studios. At least Square Enix. They made their own engine and have a lot of assets, so why not get their money's worth and reuse it?
deanb
Yeah I'm not quite getting the delay on FFX HD since it seems to be a fairly trivial process. Plenty studios have managed to knock out multi-game HD collections, yet SE are struggling with one game? p.s FFX HD thread http://forum.pressxordie.com/topic/1508-final-fantasy-x-hd-remake/
TheFlyingGerbil
Since I've never played any FF games except XIII, I wonder which of the games would be best to start with. I see people have picked VI as the best, but does that mean it's the best introduction? Also, is that what it would be called on EU PSN store as it seems they have different numbers in different countries? Thanks!
