  1. 1. What is the best FInal Fantasy?

Recommended Posts

Most of what I would read never made a point of it. Even now when I actively search for it, I get a sample of sites I've never heard of or sites I never go to for gaming news (e.g. Business Insider). That's for articles older than this past week because now more sites are making recent articles about the length, possible episodes, etc.

It also doesn't help that a lot of advertising for this game makes it out to be "the long awaited remake of a classic." Which in of itself totes the game as the complete adventure rather than a fraction of the first disc. I've seen the same revelation online and when talking in person with a few people, so I'm definitely not the only one. The amount of salt and defensive fanboys is crazy. So yeah, I'm gonna wait to see how this all turns out.

I knew it was just the Midgar section going in and they have fleshed it out so it feels like a proper full game (although, it is stretched out rather than fleshed out at a few too many points) and I'm still happy with the experience. There is a somewhat-spoilery reason that it isn't called "part one" (which it sounds like you already know).

I'm a little ambivalent on it because the characters and the environments and the combat and the music are all ace, so I'm excited to see where it's headed but the "major" changes are the ones that actually bothered me the most.

Be interesting to see if ASA acts, Square have been in trouble with them on misleading advertising on Final Fantasy games before now. No doubt ASA is a little bit stripped down at the moment mind. But yeah I know when first announced they were super clear that it was going to be episodic, and all the material shown just covered Midgar regions. Not sure if it's in the small print on the box art (the title certainly doesn't reference it)

This is pretty damn high quality. It is pretty much what you'd want from an official HD update, but largely fan made. And neat use of "AI" to update the backgrounds.
Might have been nice to slightly smooth some of the polygons of the world map mind, bits like where the Iifa Tree roots poke out look like squares.
I'd imagine ,given not really shown, that the FMVs aren't as heavily updated, but that's to be expected.

lol on SE and Sony flip-flopping about a PC release now.

BUT YEAH, dare I say I'm actually somewhat hyped for a Final Fantasy game after SOOOOO long?  It's not a return to Ivalice but something new yet feeling somewhat familiar. There's no fumbling around with new battle system either which must be a boon to development. It's the same one as FFXV but probably more refined. Square Enix probably should've done this since FFXII but I GUESS I could cut them some slack with FFXIII and its direct sequels (it seems to have gotten better than the really noticeable mashing of X and linear corridors).

But yeah, I'm really digging the setting and I don't think I'll have any complaints about the battle system. Show me what you got SE.

inb4 troubled development for a decade

The facial animations in the FF trailer were garbage (something I've noticed in FF7R too). The particle effects were very whizzy though... so there's that I guess? If it does play like FFXV then I'm ok with that. I think FFXII is in retrospect one of my favourite systems, I like that it is a sort of programming language. :)

It wasn't even that the lip-synching was bad. It just looked like old tech. The lips moved, but the rest of the face didn't. Like when adverts do babies talking or whatever. I guess having come from TLOU2 and Tsushima, my expectations are higher for that stuff...

Yeah, the facial animations in FF7R were so bad, it was often like they'd been lip-synced to another language.

I find it funny these two are together given that it's possible they are from another language (what with S-E being Japanese) and that Tsushima, for being pretty, was called out for not lip syncing to anything out of English despite offering Japanese as a "cinematic" option.

To me they look like FFXIV characters; which is understandable given the involvement of a bunch of FFXIV team. Not everything has to look like gritty realistic mocap exports (especially when you're riding a chocobo).

Like I said, it's not the lip-synching that jars. It's that it looks like PS3 level facial animation. The bottom half of the face moves realistically, the top half of the face looks like it has been botoxed. Compare to games like Horizon, Tsushima, TLOU, FFXV that have faces move realistically, the eyebrows/forehead move, the eyes blink etc.

FFXVI looks like this:

So, am going through FF7R again to hoover up the trophies. So far am not finding it too difficult, I expect to struggle with Hell House.

The MP/item restriction is tedious. I feel like they could have made hard mode = no items in battle and MP only recovered through benches, not with items if they really wanted to make MP management a thing. But to have essentially no MP recovery over a whole chapter is a bit strong. It means that you can't really use magic at all until the last battle in the chapter which makes combat a bit flat since you are restricted to attacks and abilities.

The Dressed to the Nines trophy is a total PITA. You have to replay chapter 3, 8 and 9 twice to get them all and Chapter 8 drrrrrrrrrrrrrags.

Spoiler

Watching Aerith stop and talk to everyone in S5 slums, and then having to watch the whole Scarlet interview on TV. Jeeeeeesus.
