docsfox
FFVIII is winning. Son, I am disappoint. You know FFVIII gets a lot of shit but really people love it a lot, myself included. I get a kick when people are surprised by it's popularity. i couldn't stand VIII. maybe it's a romance story only boys can love? For any romance story to work you have to be able to relate to the character at the center of it. I can see why it may be hard for some to relate to Squall but for me the relationship between Squall and Riona is one of the stronger relationships I've experienced in an RPG. Also, I know a few females who like FFVIII and it's romance story tremendously.

They are pretty much forced together in a "relationship" on the fantasy basis of "We are both pretty, and I am the main character, so I will be rescuing you." Even the "date" they go on in at the Dock/Shore town in the ocean is awkward, etc etc etc... Also, if you bring up the song "Eyes on me," it has no solid relation to the love story of Squall/Rinoa. It is more so relatable to Laguna and Julia. Griping aside. I will give FF8 was a fun game, weird on the story, boosting GF attacks and timed attacks. It just had a terribly lame "romance." It was more complicated than that but yours is the general feeling towards it. I could argue that the Squall/Rinoa romance was similar to Laguna/Julia's romance, point out that Rinoa was chasing after Seifer for a good portion of the game, or that some of it may have been lost in translation and culture but really none of that matters. It's something you either feel and get or don't.
Mr. GOH!
Tactics is the best. I voted for VI. I've played all the main line FF games except II and III. I could have voted for FFIV for nostalgia's sake or IX as an excellent palette-cleanser after the terrible, awful, no-good FFVIII. Everyone who likes VIII has bad taste in games and should feel bad. BrainHurtBoy...2
Isn't your avatar FFI? Nope. Looks like it, cause they were both on the NES, but FFIII has the job system, so you can have the same classes as FFI

Mal
VI or IX is the best but of course, if Tactics is added in there... it may be numero uno.
slithy toves
What romance, aside from the stereotypical "I SAVED THE PRINCESS SO WE ARE TOGETHER!" i hated the game, i could never get into it and the only reason i ever finished it is because it's my brother's favorite ff game and he kept telling me the romance made it worth it, go back and finish it, which i finally did like 10+ years after it was released. i still didn't think it was worth it once i did, i just couldn't get into the story or characters and i found myself angry every time you'd have the dream sequences with laguna and gang because i wanted the whole game to be that story instead. if it was their story instead the game would have been 100% better imo. my brother wasn't the only one, almost every person i know who loves that awful game points to the romance story as the reason, or one of the main reasons, why they like it. edit: so nice to see all the love for tactics here. it really is such a deliciously good game. Toshi
T.G. Cid is a god and with his excalibur damn near impossible to lose. Especially if you have a screamed Ramza.
Outkastprince
I agree, once you got CID the game got pretty easy. He was extremely overpowered. Sure, we could have not used him but he the hell did that?
slithy toves
yeah, the game got loads easier after you got cid but some of the deep dungeon levels were hard even with him and an otherwise well built team. i think that's one of the things that made that game so great and replayable was that you could beat the game with a relatively weak team or just keep on playing and getting into other, tougher fights for practically forever. Toshi
Am I the only one who wanted Cid Raines in my party in FF XIII?
toxicitizen
The best is VI imo. Best cast of characters and most memorable moments. That first time Castle Figaro dives underground. Locke's stealth mission in South Figaro. Kefka poisoning the waters of Doma. The party being split up and you picking whose part of the story you want to play first. The Phantom Forest and the ghost train. And the apocalypse in the middle of the game that changes the world map and turns the game into a more open-world affair. Plus, unlike many people, when I think "great video game villain" or even just "final fantasy villain", Kefka is the one that immediately comes to mind. Not Sephiroth. I love VII and VIII. IV even though I never finished it. X was pretty great and so was XII. I even got a decent amount of enjoyment out of the mess that was XIII. And the original is a classic in every sense of the word. But VI is the one that stuck with me the most. Edited January 1, 2011 by FLD
Dee
Personally, 7 is my favorite; however, I'm not going to call it the best. It would be a toss up, for me, between 6 and 7. In terms of best, I'd probably go with something like 6. I did love 8 as well, but I wouldn't say it's anywhere near as good as 6 or 7. Absolutely loathed 9 and 10. Didn't play 11. 12 wasn't bad, but it had a lot of potential that just was not utilized. 13 blew it out the ass. c hoertjes
6 and 7 are the only ones that matter. 8 through 10 ruined the series for me.
Yantelope
I thought about adding tactics to the list and in retrospect maybe I should have but then that kind of opens the floodgates. You want me to put FFVII: Crisis core on there too? That being said, FFTactics was a fantastic game. I really enjoyed it and was completely heartbroken when Tactics Advance finally came out years later and was little more than a childish neverending story clone.
Mal
For those who thought that Tactics got easy after getting Cid (Who didn't!?). I recall that there is a mod for Tactics that makes the game a whole lot harder. Personally, just hearing that it got that much harder scares me from playing it... And geez, those of us who loves IX are sure outnumbered. I always knew that but man. Edited January 4, 2011 by MaliciousH

Baconrath
Where's Final Fantasy Tactics on this list? Why are the Gameboy final fantasy games not included in this poll! They were fun! Especially Final Fantasy Legend! And don't give me this crap that it was just retitled under the Final Fantasy name for it's North American release! ALSO: Are we going by the Japanese numbering of Final Fantasy games or the North American numbering of games, because that is HUGE. I demand clarity! It was Final Fantasy only for teh markets

ceedee
FFVII is a great game, but I often let my hate of the fan-culture surrounding it spill over onto the game. Still, even if FVII's fanbase weren't so obnoxious and "babbyz first jrpg", I'd go with FFVI.
FMW
FF XII is my choice. There are issues with it though, so let's start with those: Most of the NPC characters are more interesting than the party characters. Vaan/Penelo have tenuous justification at best for venturing into the increasingly dangerous situations the story throws at you. Nobody specializes, the license board makes all people able to do all things. The villain characters are incredibly generic. There are so many great things though! The music is the best in the franchise. Period. It transcends "video game music" and becomes something much more. Nobody hearing it would ever suspect that these were written for a video game. It fills the fields with wonder, and the caves with uncertainty. It fills Naubudis with remorse. It fills the final boss battle with kicking ass. Seriously - listen to the final boss music. Battle for Freedom it's called. There's more compositional know-how going on there than in some entire soundtracks. The production values are through the roof. Good stuff. I think it will even age well. Hard to tell now though. The combat system effectively brings ATB to 3 dimensions. I cannot stress enough how important this was. Since the advent of 3D, JRPGs have been using the tricks from the NES and SNES eras. This game finally moves beyond those. It amazes me how FF XIII turned out. It's like JRPGs are still looking for a way into the future. IT'S RIGHT HERE! COPY THIS GAME! The story is cool. Balthier is hero-with-daddy-issues #4634, but he pulls it off so well it didn't even occur to me that he fit the cliche until I'd finished the game. Basch is stoic badass #435625, but his relationships with the much more interesting Gabranth and Larsa make him cool anyway. Vaan is zero-to-hero #99999999, and he's... lame. Penelo is longtime friend of the hero with inevitable romance #99999998, and she's...lame. Fran is longtime friend of the hero with inevitable romance #99999999, and she's... cool. I swear, Square Enix just added Vann/Penelo as a foil for Baltheir/Fran. The two pairs are very similar, and fulfill similar archetypes. The difference is that one is cool and one isn't. I'm not entirely sure how/why, but it confounds me how the same story writer could create the same thing twice, but only succeed once. If you know how to write a good heroic couple, do it for both of your heroic couples! ...This is too long isn't it? TLDR: FFXII is better than your favorite FF.
