I know now that I am probably considered a bastard, when it comes to being an RPG fan, as I didn't enter the genre really until late into the PS2 life. For my money so far, of the titles I have played to completion (7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13) 11 or XI was the greatest one for me and what I started with. Really it's kind of its own thing though, being an MMO timesink and I can see why it isn't on the list. It was simply the best at making me feel like I was part of whatever world I was in of the RPG's I have played so far.

And yes I don't just have FF experience, I have been trying to rapidly branch out as much as possible, especially into the PS1 era.

Would Final Fantasy XI be worth getting into at this point or should I just wait for XIV to be fixed and released on PS3?

So I mentioned I was playing FFIV on DS and Shadow mentioned he played it to death on original SNES release. I pointed out we didn't get that "even as FFII".

So here is a chronological release of Final Fantasy games in Europe (Officially, obviously nothing stopping folks importing consoles and games. Apart from PAL/NTSC)

1997

- Final Fantasy VII on PSX

1998

1999

- Final Fantasy VIII on PSX

2000

2001

- Final Fantasy IX on PSX

2002

- Final Fantasy IV on PSX (Final Fantasy Anthology)

- Final Fantasy V on PSX (Final Fantasy Anthology)

- Final Fantasy VI on PSX (on it's own)

- Final Fantasy X on PS2

2003

- Final Fantasy I on PSX (Final Fantasy Origins)

- Final Fantasy II on PSX (Final Fantasy Origins)

2004

- Final Fantasy XI on PC

- Final Fantasy X-2 on PS2

2005

2006

2007

- Final Fantasy III on DS

- Final Fantasy XII on PS2

2008

2009

2010

- Final Fantasy XIII on PS3/360. First time ever on simultaneous NA and EU release

- Final Fantasy XIV on PC

I don't think that it would be worth getting into at this point, though there are still a decent amount of people that will not give it up. That, and it was far too addicting for me and was able to give it up after a few tries after 3 years. Really I would hope that it's what most MMO communities are like, lots of nice people with a few asshats here and there and everyone trying not to get killed by crabs and flies in the dunes! I would wait for the possibility of 14 being fixed and try that out as I doubt 11 will be continually supported THAT much longer. I mean, it HAS to die at some point, right?

My vote is going to VI for sheer quantity of memorable moments (considering I first played it like 20 years ago), but it's really nearly a draw between VI and VIII for me as far as how much I enjoyed the first play-through. VII and X follow those very closely.

Believe it or not, in terms of combat XIII is the one that truly won my heart. I'm gonna go duck for cover now.

xiii's combat system was innovative and i think a direct response to how much ppl bitched about xii's. personally i liked xii's and i think a bit of a mix of the two, or at the very least the opportunity to change characters during battle in xiii's, would have made xiii's infinitely better. the ability to only really control one character / summon one character's eidolon was what really made that battle system low on my list. i could appreciate what they were trying to do with it but felt the execution was lacking a bit.

don't worry, there are a fair amount of ppl on this board who don't hate xiii so we won't all try to lynch you :tophat:

you should try the older ones too. not as pretty (altho you could try for like the psp or ds remakes) but certainly solid story and gameplaywise. IV and VI certainly come to mind as must plays.

The PSP remakes is what I was considering right now as I only have the PS3 and PSP. Other than downloading a Rom or something like that, but I don't mind paying still for old games. The PSP ones seem to come in double packs it looks like, at least the first 2 were in one together.

yeah, the first two are p sweet on psp but they're like super mega old school grindy/difficult still so unless yr looking for a NES-like experience prettied up a bit the DS remake of IV or PS1 port of V&VI would probably be where you'd want to start w/ the older ones.

Alrighty I will give V and VI a shot first then. I don't mind a grind so that won't be a problem for me. The more RPG's I have played the more I find I prefer the older combat styles, the non-ARPG style, if you will. Much more relaxing and lets you put more thought into your moves. I think its the same reason I prefer turn by turn strategy games over RTS.

having not played VI yet I can't really say where I'd place it... but IX will probably always be my favorite for me even if it might not be the best game objectively. With its timing and my initial play through in mind I can't find any other game better than it. I've started replaying it with a friend the other day and whilst seeing some of the flaws i overlooked in the past, seeing everything it gets right is pure awesome.

Finished FFIX recently and I just have a few questions about the ending.

Who the hell was Necron and how does he fit into the story at all? What ends up happening to Kuja? Where is Vivi and how the hell did Vivi end up having kids?

The last two questions probably have no real answer and it is probably up to the player to give his/her own interpretation. So let me hear yours, please.

FFIX ending spoiler:

Necron is a bit of a mystery with it all considered. He basically represents death itself. I read recently that he was a being awakened unintentionally by Kuja's actions and motivations. Kuja's aim was to destroy the world and he summoned the being that could pull that off, even if he later regrets it. No idea if Kuja ultimately survives... we don't really know.

First time I played I assumed Vivi died, because the game alluded to the mages short lifespans. Quite tragic really. the kid Puck meets is surely one of the mages from the black mage village which Vivi "fathered" (helped raise) during his remaining days in the black mage village. It could be that Vivi figured out a way to create new black mages without mist but i find that unlikely.

I've been considering going back to VIII. I never got to finish the last disc, and I wouldn't mind replaying the entire game. I had great times with it years ago and I think it will be really fun playing it again.

Now, I do own the PSX discs, but maybe I should just buy it off the PSN store.
