Mister Jack
Back in the day a lot of PC games were being put out with the aim of either teaching you something directly or just enriching your creative or logical thinking. Hell, Maxis used to call their games "software toys". There are still a few companies out there who put out games like this for kids, but they aren't nearly as much in the spotlight as they used to be. Still, not all of them were bad. In fact, quite a few of them were pretty decent. Post about any edutainment games that you remember fondly in this thread.
rainetemplar
I remember Pajama Sam and Freddie Fish. At the school where I have my internship (I'm an education major at uni) the kids still play Freddie Fish, it's so adorable. Thing is, it's way too difficult for them so they always have to ask me what to do. Edited December 29, 2010 by rainetemplar
Mister Jack
I remember wanting to play Pajama Sam because I thought the graphics looked really good (I know I know...). In my defense they did look good compared to Math Blaster. I still really liked Math Blaster, though.
D-K
Freddie Fish was awesome. "Kom vlug, Loebas" "super-duper-hoga-boga-polygizmo" ahhh good times.. I especially like(d) Sesame Street's Alphabet game. It's in my gaming 3x3 as well (although it's not the correct picture). First game I ever played. Edit: I can't find a picture of it anywhere. Damnit. Wiki also doesn't seem to list it under Sesame Street games. Hmmm.. False memory? Edited December 29, 2010 by D-K

MagicMagicPony
At school we played Oregon Trail and some other thing about driving a truck of goods cross country and it was hella confusing. At home I played a crapton of Treasure Mountain & Reader Rabbit when I was like.. erm, 8 or 9ish? 10ish? I don't know but either way it was in ms dos and I thought the graphics were FANTASTIC

Little Pirate
I loved the Jumpstart games as a kid. I also had those Living Books, for Little Critter and Arthur.

MagicMagicPony
Oh in middle school I volunteered at a day camp and I remember working in the computer lab and being like.... what is this Myst thing on here? and then ten minutes later I was like "F THIS S IN THE B" and I still feel that way about it. Mister Jack
I played that Arthur Book thing once. It was in...I wanna say it was a Discovery Channel store, but I'm pretty sure that wasn't it. It was a lot LIKE the Discovery Channel store, though. Also, I played this. Little Pirate
Oregon Trail This was a game we were required to play in school. I don't think I've ever gotten as pissed with a game as I did with this one. Edited December 29, 2010 by LittlePirate
MagicMagicPony
There was hardly any way to win. I would always just buy mostly ammo and then just hunt during our gaming hour or whatever
Little Pirate
I made sure to start out with a doctor to go along with us. I usually lasted longer, but then we'd run out of food at some point.

Mister Jack
I remember during some history lesson in my school library once there were groups divvied up into different tasks and they'd alternate the next day or so. One group got to play Oregon Trail. The unluckiest group (i.e. me) had to write up a report about the Louisiana Purchase. I hated those Oregon Trail kids so much.
