staySICK
I loved the demo. I'm hoping they maybe tweaked the controls a little bit, otherwise I may have to play it on easy for the undo feature. They were a little too touchy for my liking. Strangelove
Game informer gave it a 7. They complained about the puzzles.
Strangelove
Oh and also, Gamestop doesnt have the Love Is Over edition on their site anymore. I wonder why.
Saturnine Tenshi
They take down collector's editions when the game is nearly out.
FMW
Game Informer is a valuable resource for those looking for information on shooters and other Western developed games. I recognized years ago that they are not to be trusted regarding JRPGs or other niche titles that come from Japan. And I totally understand where that comes from. They're owned by GameStop, and Japanese games haven't been selling as well in the US this generation. There must be enormous pressure to cover all the million sellers and potential million sellers in depth. Catherine is... not. Unfortunately. Strangelove
I think a 7 is pretty good all things considering. Then again, in the same issue they give Duke Nukem Forever a 6.75. Then again, shadows of the damned was game of the month. Its as japanese as you can get. Edited July 16, 2011 by Strangelove
Saturnine Tenshi
A seven isn't a bad score. The review scope isn't 6-10. It's 1-10. (Not that Game Informer isn't some of the "professional" stuff I've read.) Edited July 16, 2011 by Saturnine Tenshi
SomTervo
IGN fucking loved it. Their arguments sounded quite good, too. They basically said "if it's too hard for you, you aren't going to get into it, but if you rise to the challenge with dedication, you're going to have a great experience". Was one of the better IGN reviews I've read. Seeing as I've never actually read a good one, that was a position easily won.
toxicitizen
I also like how the IGN review praised the game's originality. That's something too far few games dare experiment with and I was happy to see they it acknowledged. Some of my favorite games this gen were the more unusual titles. Flawed but unique games like Mirror's Edge or even L.A. Noire. I still love me some Uncharted, Dead Space and Call of Duty, but you always know what to expect with those games. Saturnine Tenshi
That should have been 'worst "professional" stuff'.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
I like Game Informer... But I can agree that IGN is usually a bucket of garbage. Remember that Dead Space 2 review http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/114/1145296p1.html I feel like it's been edited since I read it last. I could have sworn that it started with "Today, I'm going to write about Dead Space 2", but it's still pretty awful.
CorgiShinobi
I like IGN... Usually about 15% of it at least. I trust the IGN Catherine review because I don't see why else there would be a motive to "buffer" the score. Maybe if this was some popular installment in "Hardcore Mancorps Xtreme Shooter Punks," I would be wary of it all.
CorgiShinobi
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-hd-catherine/717675 GT REVIEW!I would say the score they give (no spoiler) might probably be a fair assessment of how the average gamer would feel towards the game. It's not really niche, but ever since the demo, the puzzles have been a huge dividing line for enjoyment.Still, I pre-ordered this game today and Amazon had a cheap Release Day shipping price. Really, it was only 99 cents! Like, how does that work?
「Advent Chaos」
I'm ashamed to learn that this thread existed just now. I've come to like GT's reviews even if the review themselves don't always match up to their scores (they would praise a game so much and then award it a 7 or less). Still, I pre-ordered this game today and Amazon had a cheap Release Day shipping price. Really, it was only 99 cents! Like, how does that work? I know! I've seen other games that have the $0.99 release day delivery offer. My guess is that these games are shipped out in the same batch that would go to retail? Although that may be troublesome for the retailers. Whatevs, I'm paying $80.95 to get a fun game the afternoon it releases. Speaking of delivery around what times does your delivery man pass by your house? The three times that the UPS-man has come to my house have been at at late afternoon, I think I'm his last delivery :c
Saturnine Tenshi
Well, I just discovered there is no dual audio. And I cannot stand the VA's they're using for the girls. So meh.
staySICK
I haven't gotten an email notice yet, but my order shows estimated delivery of tomorrow, but I can't track it. hmmm..
DarkMalice
I'm an idiot! I'm an idiot! I'm an idiot! Had cancelled my preorder yesterday from amazon.ca cuz I said fuck waiting til next week for it to ship to my house when I could pick it up today. Turns out neither my closest Walmart nor Blockbuster are stocking the game. EB Games and Best Buy are way to freaking far. Meaning I gave up the pre-order bonuses for nothing
CorgiShinobi
Gotta say, it's easy to screw yourself over during the puzzles. Good thing you get quite a bit of Retries. Still, I'm getting quite a lot of silver trophies. I got a bronze in the Torture Chamber because, I believe, using Undo reduces your score. I had used it at least three times. CorgiShinobi
I feel slightly embarrassed, but I had to look at a YouTube video for Stage 4. Remember, you'll have to use a lot of the techniques the sheep teach you. Seriously, I forgot you could slide a row of blocks and it made it near impossible to get to the near top of Stage 4-1. I'll have to redo the bar scene again though. Might be for the best because I didn't realize that a "......." response to one of Katherine's calls was the nice option compared to "I was surprised." Not that I'm earnestly trying for an "All Good" run, but really, who's going to understand the impact of ".........."
「Advent Chaos」
I often find myself pushing blocks forward leading me with no way up or having to use dark blocks. I've been playing on normal, but I've decided to never use an "Undo", because I'm badass like that. Even so though, I've been scoring bronze trophies all around, just one gold, but that was the very first stage (in the demo). It took me about 20+ tries getting past <spoiler> The Child </spoiler>, although in the process I ended up getting a lot of retries, right now I've got 69 Retries accumulated. Hey Atomsk, have you been drinking at the bar? It's supposed to be useful or somethin' right? I have been, but I don't notice/feel much change. CorgiShinobi
Yes, a full three bottles means you move the fastest possible. It's not too hard and you'll get trophies/achievements if you get all the trivia on the specific drink. I think the limit for Retries is 99 because I've been varying between 84 to 99 Retries. I'm at Stage 7 Floor 2 (7-2). I don't like looking at YouTube videos, but every now and then I become stuck at one section, and personally I don't like constantly retrying (even if I have 99) for 40 minutes to make no progress. Stage 7-2 can be done in two minutes, but before I saw a video of it, I had already spent 20 minutes just to get halfway. I wish more "X-Talkers" were playing Catherine. I want to know what people have been doing! Honestly, I thought there would be more to the game, but you play puzzles, and when you're not you're in a bar talking to people. You really can't spend too much time in the bar and the Rapunzel game doesn't hold my interest. EDIT: Well, there still is Babel which I haven't tried yet. I think if I try for all the endings, I'm going through it all on Easy. I'm not going to attempt Hard unless I magically gain the gift of the gods to move blocks. CorgiShinobi
Blugh, I'm finally on the Stage 7 boss. I'm proud of myself for figuring out Stage 7-4 by... myself! Yet, there was a section in Stage 7-5 (Boss) where I had to look up another video. It turns out I was moving one wrong block. Maybe it's different in Easy, but an interview said there would be multiple ways of climbing, yet a lot of these puzzles seem to only have one or two ways. It's possible it was meant that some block formation lead to the same result, but right now you need to know the exact method to get halfway. I watched a little more and I believe I can handle it. It's not really a spoiler, but the Stage 7 boss doesn't really attack you that much. Unlike the Stage 6 boss which was a pain all around!
