Here's the stuff I would have picked:

  • Best Studio: Bungie
  • Best Action Adventure Game: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
  • Best Shooter: Halo: Reach
  • Best RPG: Mass Effect 2 (Fallout: NV was *this* close)
  • Best Independent Game: Limbo
  • Best Downloadable Game: Monday Night Combat
  • Best DLC: Lair of the Shadow Broker
  • Best Score: Halo: Reach
  • Best Performance by a Male: Rob Wiethoff (Jon Marston, Red Dead Redemption)
  • Best Performance by a Female: Yvonne Strahovski (Miranda Lawson, Mass Effect 2)
  • Character of the Year: Ezio if I'm confined to their nominees, Illusive Man if I'm not
  • Game of the Year: Red Dead Redemption

Couple of things struck me as odd: how does Mario Galaxy 2 make it into the Action Adventure category? And how does Buck get the nomination for Best Performance? He was in Reach for like 10 seconds.

What possible significance could planet Earth have to the Reapers?

Well I would imagine that Shepard's actions in the first two game are, at least partially, to blame for the Reapers bringing the fight to Earth.

But yeah, Earth feels pretty insignificant when you look at the bigger picture of the Mass Effect universe/story.

Maybe if the award show was focused more on the awards and not basically a primetime ad for GameTrailers (he'll, they even have Geoff Keighley producing the show, what did we expect?), us gamers might actually respect these.

The GDC awards, and maybe the BAFTAs, are the only ones people take seriously. And with good reason. If the writers have to resort to weed and basement-dweller virgin jokes to perpetuate a stereotype, rather than the slightly more sophisticated people we actually are, then of course we're going to roll our eyes and deny their existence.

You stay classy, Spike.

I'm partial to the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science Awards myself.

As for the VGAs, I thought they were pretty good for a mainstream production. Still a few things to nit pick over, but overall, a solid production imo. My biggest gripe wasn't even with the show itself, but the shortlist of games to vote on. It focused more on, "What are the best selling games this year with the highest metacritic score" as opposed to titles that felt truly deserving. At least, that's my $0.02.

Actually there was a blog one of the guys tweeted, kinda showed that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the highest rated game of the year and wasn't even shortlisted.

The post was musing about how the games can be reviewed really highly, yet they're apparently not The Game of the Year
