Realised we don't have this topic over here...yet.

First up, shameless plug. I wrote an article here: http://pressxordie.com/2010/11/23/meet-the-new-boss-same-as-the-old%C2%A0boss/ There is a note in there but BEWARE OF SPOILARZ!!!

Boss fights, boss battles, whatever you wanna call 'em... (there may be a valid distinction between the two)

Love them? Hate them? Think there's a time and a place for them (or a type of game)?

Tell us about your most memorable boss battles, be it good or bad. What do you think works (or does not work) in a boss battle?

Discuss.

One thing every boss should give you is the ability to defeat him on your first try. This not meaning he should be easy, but that it's theoretically possible. An example of it done badly is the Hell boss in Super Meat Boy. There is no time to react to his attacks, you are just expected to die and then avoid the attack the next time since the pattern is always the same.

Strangely though, the first ones that come to mind are Pyramid Head (SH2) and Nemesis (RE3). But I'm not sure they are bosses as much as they are a menacing force chasing you.

Heck, you don't even get to defeat Pyramid Head...

Damn you, Doom Dragon from Golden Sun 2. Just so impossibly hard. I grinded for hours on end, took forever just to get a few levels. Still couldn't win.

I had to play the entire god damn game again, so I could use the import feature to get better items + the incredibly broken secret summon before I could finally finish that son of a bitch.

Dracula in the original Castlevania is ridiculous. Hooray random spawning! I've got a semblance of a strategy, but it's not perfect...because it can't be.

I really like boss battles in RPGs, especially the crazy extra bosses. I beat both WEAPONs in FFVII, even though it took me forever. There's something about a well-created boss battle that supersedes any amount of grinding that you've done up to that point that just makes me happy.

Mother Brain from Metroid (original, Super and Zero Mission) is fucking impossible. There's no strategy to that shit. Just kill it before it kills you.

actually, that is the main strategy. Get level with Mother Brain and then shoot missiles as many missiles as fast as you can.

Even though Link to the Past was my favorite Zelda game, I still remember the moment I encountered Ganon in Ocarina of Time. My favorite part is when he stands up and the lightening illuminates him for a brief moment. When that happened I nearly shit myself. By the way, I'm proud to say I own the version of OoT where Ganon's blood is red!

I also liked the fight against Trypticon in War for Cybertron. Skip to 2:15 for the actual fight.

The worst bait and switch boss had to be Necron from FFIX. I actually liked FFIX, but changing the final boss in the last five minutes? I hate that so damn much. FFIX isn't the only game to do it, but it's definitely the one that sticks out to me the most.

That really bothered me. The boss wasn't mentioned at any point of the game and he just shows up out of nowhere.

I hated how he appeared randomly after all that climatic build up with Kuja.

Final boss battle with Dr. Robotnik with all of the emeralds collected from Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. Kick ass music as you settle the score with your nemesis, and then you think the game is over... then suddenly DOOMSDAY ZONE and it's on.

Wow. I had no idea that even existed (never had the Knuckles part...nor am I skilled enough), that's pretty awesome.

Golden Sun 1&2: fucking dragon..

Rogue Galaxy: having 7 boss fights with incremental raises in difficulty without checkpoints and with a final boss with a MASSIVE health bar is never a good idea. I retried it 3 times (every attempt taking at least 25 minutes) and then ragequit. This resulted in me not finishing one of my favourite games. (it's in my 3x3)

MGS: Psycho Mantis was freaking awesome. Using the player 2 port to escape having your mind read was brilliant. Just brilliant.

Any Turtles game: Shredder was a badass in any/every concievable turtles game. Hell, I couldn't get past this fucker in the BOARD game. Tough as nails.

X-men legends: Ironically, I remember these bossfight exactly because they weren't memorable at all. This game had the most anti climactic bossfights ever. It was ridiculous.

Mortal Kombat: Shang Tsung, this evil bastard was 10x as hard has goro.. and goro wasn't exactly a pushover.

Frogger: It took my ages to beat the final level.. damn fickle logs.

Dynamite Cops: There was a Kraken in a cruise ship. Not in water or anything, just a Kraken lounging around, waiting for a player character to squirt on. Immortal Kraken proved memorable enough, I guess. This game had the BEST quick-time-events by the way. I haven't since seen a game that implemented QTE's so well. It was on Neo Geo no less!

See, I never liked any of the bosses in the TMNT games. Sure they could be badass, but it seems the only tactic is to try and find the right place to stand in order to hit them but just about avoid their instant retaliation.

I can't really remember any decent X-Men Legends or Marvel: Ultimate Alliance bosses, although the one at the end of X-Men Legends was OK. I remember you actually had to employ a bit of thought rather than the usual 'pound on them until they die'. Having said that, the first boss in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 was alright; just a matter of keeping back the hordes of enemies, avoiding missiles and attacking when you had the chance. I was pretty proud of myself for beating that on the hardest difficulty with no deaths (you only get two 'healing tokens' at a time now)
