Akuam4n
MGS4, I loved the intro. Deep man, deep. No need to post part two, no one will watch it because it's so long.

docsfox
This is one of those openings that really grabbed you during your first playthrough and immersed you into the game, since it was your first time seeing Black Mesa, and getting an idea of what it was about. Anytime after that though, this opening starts, and you're just like... "FFFFFFFFFFFFF time to go make myself busy for 5 minutes." lol I can understand that frustration but for me I don't seem to get tired of that opening. Maybe it's the calm before the storm that gets me ready for the rest of the game.

deanb
They're only short stories aren't they? I may hunt down translated copy for summer reading.
Hot Heart
Yeah, that opening is a bit of the first short story; and that is Princess Adda...who, obviously, Geralt later has a chance to sleep with ('You plant the seed. Then you fuck the plant'?) I would definitely recommend the book (The Last Wish). All great short stories. Also, I just realised, my copy never played the voiceover during the intro film (of course, I knew what was happening anyway).
Mr W Phallus
Half-Life has a great opening but I prefer Half-Life 2's, mostly for the epic sequence as the Combine close in on you, and you race through the level panicking, trying to outrun them. The level-design is so well constructed that you instinctively find the right way to go, and yet the actual linearity of the level is cleverly disguised. Moments like this, where you are actually playing the game, are somewhat paradoxically much more cinematic than watching a shiny pre-rendered cut-scene I think. Bioshock did this really well too, although that slowly built tension rather than providing the adrenaline rush of Half-Life 2.
P4: Gritty Reboot
All the Half-Life games, the opening cinematic to Left 4 Dead, Goldeneye for the Wii...
toxicitizen
The level-design is so well constructed that you instinctively find the right way to go, and yet the actual linearity of the level is cleverly disguised. Yeah, Half-Life 2 has some truly amazing level design. When I was playing it for the first time, I remember a moment where the only visible way to proceed is to go down a big hole in the ground but there's no ladder or anything, so it's a short platforming section where you make your way down by jumping on the large wooden beams on each sides of the hole. It took me a few minutes to realize that that was the way down and then I stood there for another minute wondering "no, seriously, is this REALLY the way down?". Valve have a way of designing levels that sometimes feel like you shouldn't be where you are, and that's just awesome. McBeeferton
For those of you who said Mass Effect. Fuck. You. and I say this because of one reason: UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENES Which is a pain in the ass for a game with such a great replay value. Fuck you, Bioware. ...However, everything else is pretty good yeah. >.>
WTF
A few intros I like have already been mentioned. So here's some of my more memorable ones. Tekken 3. So many memories of playing this during Uni years. Friends would come over and we'd boot it up and watch the sequence almost everytime we played. It just was a good intro for characters. Crash Bandicoot 3. The narrator. NFS: Porsche Unleashed. Probably my favourite game in the series to be honest. Played it a lot on the PC. While Blizzard has several memorable openings. The one that really stood out for me was Diablo 2. It was of course the wanderer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRhY5OXtLd0 Forgotten Worlds. Probably my favourite Capcom game. The intro was less than 30 seconds but you could see most of the bosses you'd face in that tiny sequence. Not to mention the game had some funny Shopkeeper music. Turns out the shopkeeper was the princess in the end. I think I hit my limit on that post. So continued
WTF
Streets of Rage. Yuzo Koshiro. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hikFCwduCIQ Probably my favourite X Capcom game intro. The game wasn't too bad either and lots of characters that I used to like made an appearance in the game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAUfyCz-BGU Grim Fandango Opening. Nier Opening cinematic. Totally unexpected and amusing at the same time. Filled with expletives so NSFW. God of War 3 cinematic opening. Even though the game's opening was epic in the Greek sense of the word, the intro sequence was a classic throwback to older Greek Myth based movies and done well too. SomTervo
Starts properly from 00:39. I love how it starts by putting players in such an intense, cinematic, and thrilling position.Great.I'd also nominate Demon's Souls. The first story-based thing the game does is kill you =D Edited March 15, 2011 by kenshi_ryden
