deanb
Eh, always worth listening how n what context they say "exclusive". Cos they'll usually say like "console exclusive" or "exclusive this fall" or something like that. I always figured everyone actually knew it wouldn't be an Xbox One stupid. Square need the cash these days. Making Final Fantasy Xv for a decade isn't free
Thursday Next
I felt like people were being unreasonable when they were complaining about MS's statement about TR's exclusivity being confusing. I thought it was perfectly clear that it was a timed exclusive. *Edit - Man, I'm starting to sound like an MS fanboy ITT. So to put the record straight I think the timed exclusivity is lame and wish they hadn't done it. They've always been weasel worded about it. It's only clear if you are fluent in corporate double speak. "It's coming exclusively to Xbox One in Holiday 2015" can just as easily be interpreted as this is an exclusive game that will be released in November/December. Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity deal "has a duration". "I don't know where else Tomb Raider goes," could be interpreted as Rise of the Tomb Raider is Xbone exclusive, future Tomb Raiders may not be. Whenever MS have been asked "Is it a timed exclusive?" the response has never been a direct "Yes" it's always been "All contracts have a duration" or "It's coming exclusively in Holiday 2015". Contrast with PS that have the pretty straight forward "Coming first to PS4" or "Coming exclusively to PS4". You know where you are there.
deanb
Weasel word! I knew there was a term. I put "worm words" but was like "no that doesn't sound right" so cut it out. (maybe wormtongue inspired that?)
TheMightyEthan
I agree that Sony's straight talk is vastly preferable, I was just irritated by all those game journos, who should be familiar enough with corporate double speak to understand what it meant, pretending there's some huge mystery about it. "Exclusively on Xbox One in Holiday 2015" obviously means timed exclusive because if it didn't they wouldn't have phrased it so stupidly. Thursday Next
Fair enough, but I lay the blame for that on MS for trying to deceive, inveigle and obfuscate, rather than on the journalists who were being non-committal in the face of a slippery statement. I bet I could have done a dissertation for linguistics at university about how the rhetoric employed by the three game console giants. Would have made for a great essay. Thursday Next
I love the subtlety with which "sacks and sacks and sacks of money" has been translated into "passion". http://www.examiner.com/article/square-ceo-on-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-xbox-one-exclusivity-microsoft-s-passion
Mr. GOH!
Nah, Square is being open and honest; they have a passion for sacks and sacks of money.
Thursday Next
At least MS are being upfront about Tomb Raider being a timed excl... oh, no... wait. It's still in their list of games coming Exclusively to Xbox (this year). The massive bellends.
TheMightyEthan
Stealth demonstration: I still need to see more of Uncharted, but so far I am looking forward to this game much much more.
deanb
So to advertise that they've spent a lot of money getting Tomb Raider sequel as an timed exclusive, timed alongisde Fallout 4 coming out, Microsfot have got 8 people on a billboard: http://uk.businessinsider.com/xbox-tomb-raider-survival-billboard-ad-2015-11?r=US&IR=T As in real life people stood on a billboard. Whoever lasts longest gets to go for a "tomb raider inspired trip".
Mister Jack
That's the nice way of saying they're going to send them on a cruise, then sink it near a deserted island and move on to other things.
deanb
Word on the street is this has bombed in sales with just 60K copies sold in UK. Not a surprise given it was launched up against Fallout 4 and MS paid for a timed exclusive. I wonder how it'll fare when it launches on PS4 and PC later this year (PS4 version of original Tomb Raider was at 20K sales last week). TheMightyEthan
PS4 version isn't coming until next year (probably next fall). PC is less clear, but I would imagine the same.
Mister Jack
It takes a lot of balls to launch on the same day as Fallout 4 (and mere days after Call of Duty). I'm surprised they didn't delay it to get a better window. It wouldn't be the first time a publisher has done that.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I was looking forward to Tomb Raider, but not as much as Fallout 4.
deanb
Wonder how much of a loss MS and SE will make on it. Be sucky for them if the PS4 and PC versions sold more. Considering S-E execs were complaining Tomb Raider hadn't sold enough made it even worse they'd go and sign up for a timed exclusivity deal.
TheFlyingGerbil
I feel sorry for the developers but I can't help but be pleased that it's turned out badly for the publisher and MS because I just think timed exclusives are the cheapest trick to pull. Eleven
I'm watching a let's play of this game and I have to say the facial animations look really cool. Frame rate keeps dropping though. Not sure if it's just the video. But it's probably the game. When does this release on PC/PS4?!? I want to play already! Thursday Next
I thought PC was early next year, PS4 November. Yeah, Q1 2016 for PC, "Holiday" 2016 for PS4. http://uk.ign.com/articles/2015/07/23/rise-of-the-tomb-raider-gets-ps4-and-pc-release-dates
