Yeah, they both have that "rabbit hole feel"...at least I feel that is what's going to happen in this novel. Can't wait! Reminds me of college. Took a few Post-Modern literature courses. Loved them. Dance Dance Dance is a sequel to A WIld Sheep Chase but you'd never notice if you didn't read it. 1Q84 is dense and IMO just not very concise. Terrible fucking title (well it's starting to make sense more than halfway through at least) but this is a damn enjoyable read so far. He turned down the absurdity in this one and brought it more in line with his comics that aren't insane concepts like Black Summer. This is a book that matches the wit and enjoyment of his works like Transmetropolitan instead. There's a lot more substance here rather than shock value and style. I really enjoyed Crooked Little Vein, even modeled a V:TM character after McGrill, but yeah it was really fucking absurd. I read (in fact I think it's in the afterward/appendix of CLV) that the book came about after being badgered by his agent about writing a book, which makes perfect sense after the fact. I got some really strange looks in my work's break room reading the sections after the novel and having BABY JESUS BUTTPLUGS in huge letters at the top of the page. Faiblesse Des Sens Posted August 1, 2014 Report Share Posted August 1, 2014 I started Annilihation by Jeff Vandermeer after finishing Gun Machine. A surreal Roadside Panic (the book STALKER is based off of) sort of vibe involving 4 scientists who go into the zone area x to chart unknown territory and figure out the mysteries of the place. They're the 12th team to make this expedition and the experiences have varied greatly for each expedition. Lots of weird ass stuff going on involving both the characters and the way they interact with each other and the world they're explorig. I really like it so far. The pacing is nuts. I went back to check on something earlier in the book and was blown away just how much was packed into 7 pages. I'm only about 40 in but I feel like it would be about 120 into any other novel. Gripping from start to finish with some tremendous writing. I laughed, I cried and I couldn't put it down. Currently reading (or I'm about to start), Dark Eden.
