Faiblesse Des Sens
Just started 1Q84 by Haruki. Really not sure what I got myself into lol Reminds me of the postmodern author that wrote "Against the Day." Can't remember his name right now for some reason. Have you read Murakami before? Not really something I'd recommend to start with for him.
Mr. GOH!
Have you read the other Dragon Age books, Ethan? Just how terrible are they?
TheMightyEthan
This is the first one I've read. It is not as bad as I feared. It's certainly better than some things I've read.
Mr. GOH!
How does it compare to other fantasy novels? Disclosure: I am a fan of sci-fi/fantasy genre books, but I can be picky.
TheMightyEthan
I don't read much fantasy, so I can't really say. The writing is fine, nothing horrible but not standout, but if you're picky you probably wouldn't like it.

Can't remember his name right now for some reason. Have you read Murakami before? Not really something I'd recommend to start with for him. I have not...but what would you recommend? And could you go into detail why it isn't good to start with? And NOW I remember the author's name...Thomas Pynchon!...Really enjoy his books. Mr. GOH!
I do not think it is mere coincidence that makes you recall Pynchon when reading Murakami.
Vecha
I do not think it is mere coincidence that makes you recall Pynchon when reading Murakami. Yeah, they both have that "rabbit hole feel"...at least I feel that is what's going to happen in this novel. Can't wait! Reminds me of college. Took a few Post-Modern literature courses. Loved them. Especially since it seemed only a few students would ever sign up for the course, so made it a more personal(and demanding) course.

And NOW I remember the author's name...Thomas Pynchon!...Really enjoy his books. I'd start with Kafka on the Shore, Hard-Boiled Wonderland, or Dance Dance Dance. Dance Dance Dance is a sequel to A WIld Sheep Chase but you'd never notice if you didn't read it. 1Q84 is dense and IMO just not very concise. The writing just doesn't flow like it does in his other novels.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I've been reading Warren Ellis' Gun Machine. Terrible fucking title (well it's starting to make sense more than halfway through at least) but this is a damn enjoyable read so far. He turned down the absurdity in this one and brought it more in line with his comics that aren't insane concepts like Black Summer. This is a book that matches the wit and enjoyment of his works like Transmetropolitan instead. There's a lot more substance here rather than shock value and style. A huge improvement over his first book.
staySICK
Gun Machine was pretty good. I really enjoyed Crooked Little Vein, even modeled a V:TM character after McGrill, but yeah it was really fucking absurd. I read (in fact I think it's in the afterward/appendix of CLV) that the book came about after being badgered by his agent about writing a book, which makes perfect sense after the fact. I got some really strange looks in my work's break room reading the sections after the novel and having BABY JESUS BUTTPLUGS in huge letters at the top of the page. I have Dead Pig Collector on my n7 but still haven't gotten around to reading it. Edited July 31, 2014 by staySICK
Faiblesse Des Sens
I started Annilihation by Jeff Vandermeer after finishing Gun Machine. A surreal Roadside Panic (the book STALKER is based off of) sort of vibe involving 4 scientists who go into the zone area x to chart unknown territory and figure out the mysteries of the place. They're the 12th team to make this expedition and the experiences have varied greatly for each expedition. Lots of weird ass stuff going on involving both the characters and the way they interact with each other and the world they're explorig. I really like it so far. The pacing is nuts. I went back to check on something earlier in the book and was blown away just how much was packed into 7 pages. I'm only about 40 in but I feel like it would be about 120 into any other novel. Saying that, it's not Dostoevsky, it's easy to read through it. I guess there's just absolutely zero filler.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I finished Annihilation. What in the serious actual fuck. This goes way beyond any weirdness that Roadside Picnic did. Some seriously crazy shit. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
Saturnine Tenshi
How does it compare to other fantasy novels? Disclosure: I am a fan of sci-fi/fantasy genre books, but I can be picky. The Dragon Age novels are pretty average, and will probably only appeal to you if you're interested in Dragon Age lore. I've only read The Calling and The Stolen Throne, though. danielpholt
Has anyone read The Martian? Fantastic little novel about an Astronaut who gets stranded on Mars. Gripping from start to finish with some tremendous writing. I laughed, I cried and I couldn't put it down. Currently reading (or I'm about to start), Dark Eden. No idea what to expect going in, except that it's got an interesting take on spelling..
Faiblesse Des Sens
I'm like 90% through Neuromancer. Fun read once you get used to the style.
Mr. GOH!
FDS: Annihilation is better than Authority, but Authority is pretty great. Acceptance is out next week and I cannot wait.
Saturnine Tenshi
I'm working on finishing the Discworld and Elric series. When I'm not reading articles for research.
Chronixal
Figured I'd finally take The Divine Comedy. It's not exactly a slog but I can't help but think chunks are going over my head.
TheMightyEthan
I've been reading Otherland by Tad Williams. It's good, I'm liking it so far, but I'm only about halfway through the first one (of 4) and wondering what kind of time commitment I've created for myself... Faiblesse Des Sens
Finished Neuromancer for the first time. Great read. Most of it holds up. It's pretty awesome to see how influential it is, too.
Mr. GOH!
Reading Acceptance, the final book in the Southern Reach trilogy. Interesting how, by the halfway point, it ties together the first two books. Edited September 9, 2014 by Mr. GOH!
Faiblesse Des Sens
Reading Acceptance, the final book int eh Southern Reach trilogy. Interesting how, by the halfway point, it ties together the first two books. Shit. I'm halfway through Authority. I like the change of pace. Much longer book but much less dense.
TheFlyingGerbil
Annihilation, the first book in that series is free on kindle at the moment for anyone whose interest is piqued.
