English vs English

Carboot. Full name: carboot sale. It's a market of sorts, usually held in a local field area like a school, race course, park, etc where people sell old (though some increasingly selling new items) stuff via their car boot(..trunk iirc). Normally on a table mind. Well.. wallpapering table usually (light and easily folds up into car).

Good for finding antiques, items no longer on sale, cheap books and games, random toys etc.

What is a swap meet?

So I'm in England for the first time ever and have a few questions and general remarks.

What's up with "Mind the Gap?" It's a London Underground thing, I guess, but it's everywhere. I rode the tube for about 45 minutes yesterday and heard it at least 20 times. Did it start as a joke?

I didn't realize "Keep Calm and Carry On" was such a thing. In the US it's always been sort of an image macro/meme, but I've seen it all over here.

Orange Juice comes with "Juicy Bits" rather than "Pulp". That's just adorable.

Mind the Gap: There is a gap between the train and the platform, don't get your foot in it or drop your wallet or phone down it. It's a safety warning, not a joke.

It is a meme of sorts here. It started life in WWII as a propaganda type poster. Few years back an original copy was discovered in a post office attic(iirc) and it gained a sort of retro chic popularity. (Which means "always" in US is a couple years at most)

Why the hell would we put Jarvis Cocker in our orang juice?

I got that, it was just repeated so much throughout (on the tube and on the platform itself) that it seemed overly redundant, almost like a running joke. Maybe I'm wrong.

I was actually going to comment on that, but I figured it wasn't the answer. Unless it is, and in that case all I can say is "awesome".

If you want cute, buy some 'Innocent' brand drinks and read the packaging on those. :D

Now I want to.

I hate all that faux cutesy nonsense that's on packaging these days. They're certainly not the worst though. The converse, but equally annoying trend is having children doling out zen advice or parenting their parents. SO annoying.

I'm with you, excel. There is no reason the fat kid always has to be the comedic relief or the born loser. That reminds me of Not Another Teen Movie when the character of one black guy says something along the lines of 'I'm just here to say neat phrases like bling-bling and...'. Shit's true. Fat guys gotta be The Fool instead of King Lear.
