Takeaway food

So what kind of take-away food do you like?

What preferences for certain meals and such?

I'm a fan of Chinese. Nearly everything Chinese tastes amazingly good. It's kinda bad for you, but most has vegetables in it so it balances out.

As I said in the other thread I tend to get either beef/chicken chow mien, chicken egg foo young, or Crispy Shredded Beef in either an O-K sauce or Cantonese Sauce (spicy).

On the recommendation of some guys on steam I once tried Chicken in Kung Pao sauce, which was kinda foul. The chicken in the sauce was great, but for some reason the sauce was really horrible with everything else in the dish so I chucked most of it out. Part of the reason for this thread is for recommendations, try stuff new n all that.

Like most brits I'm also partial to a fish n chips, but I hate my current local, the chips are a bit too leathery (though great if you can get them fresh) the fish is really nice though.

Pizza wise I go with Pollo funghi/zeno, or a meat feast. I prefer thin crust, but most are pan :(

Don't get chicken often, KFC is fricking expensive, but there's this 'megamix burger' one of the local chicken places do that's gorgeous. Tad pricey (but cheaper than KFC) so not something to get often, but the fries are from heaven, and the layered chickens pretty filling.

Thai n Mexican is pretty non-existant around here. We once had a burrito place but it closed after about 3 months. I think Mexican just isn't as popular around here for take always (Old El Paso kits sell loads, so folks clearly like it at home)

Oh and the Middlesbrough speciality the Parmo. Or Chicken Parmesan for long. Only had a few in first year, it's sort of 'one of those things you try'. It has about 2,000 calories in a portion. Tastes godly though and fills you right up.

Looks foul mind, so you need to be a bit wasted:

I'll probably have one before I leave.

So yeah, what kind of things do you get when you can't be arsed to cook for yourself? What dishes do you enjoy and recommend others have a shot with?

Let's see. I try to stay away from fast food. About the only stuff I'll eat is Chick-fil-a. God that place is good. Otherwise, I don't tend to go out to eat often. Maybe once or twice a month. When I do go, I like to eat Italian (Stuff like Olive Garden, not pizza), Japanese, or Chinese. Also I live too far out of the city to get anything delivered.

I love Indian, Chinese, Thai or Japanese if I'm getting take away.

Indian - Chicken Biryani, spinach pakora, aloo paratha/nan.

Chinese - General Tso's, Sweet and Sour chicken, fried rice, pan fried noodles

Thai - Crab ragoon, chicken satay, pad se ew

Japanese - Salmon Teriyaki, chicken katsu, yakisoba noodles, rice, edamame

In terms of fast food, I'll go to Popeye's, Carl's Jr., Dairy Queen, Taco Time--depends on my mood.

Spicy... Cantonese sauce...? Dean, you just confounded a Cantonese dude here! Cantonese food is varied and I'm sure I tried them all but you stumped me on what it is. So as I type this... a quick Google... I think I know what you are referring to now. Maybe. Yeah, that sauce is good. I sometimes just add that sauce to rice.

As for takeaway food, anything goes. I love food but yeah. Here are some basics.

Burgers - Usually In N Out. Double double with animal fries. Cheap and tasty.

Mexican - Anywhere is fine but my usual is the local Mexican place I go to. Cheap and has good choices.

Fried Chicken - Popeye's usually. KFC if we're lazy.

All others... I don't know how to list them... Chinese food as in entrees my family rarely take out but the BBQ stuff, yes. It depends on convenience but we have the stores we go to for such and such.

McDonald's/KFC/Pizza Hut is stupidly expensive here, not to mention (gasp) it's for folk with money. (You "Westerners" wouldn't believe how Pizza Hut looks fancy here.) Chinese is also expensive and Japanese costs a bloody fortune.

But we have cheap Serbian BBQ. You can get a giant hamburger with the meat filled with spices, cheese and ham (like, regular burger meat, but it has that in its core) for 2 euro. The BBQ here is awesome if you know where to look.

There's also an insane amount of bakeries here.

The Chinese place by my house has dishes with absolutely ridiculous sauces. It's insane. Apparently they're known for their chicken wings, but I just get a fried beef dish in the same sauce.

Other than that, the burritos in this city at the authentic taquerias are just mindblowing.

Seriously - a force to be reckoned with.

There was a guy in one of my writing classes that wrote a five page ode to the Mission District burrito.

Reading this topic made me sort of sick. =\ Come on guys, cook at home more!

Well a takeaway thread with just folks mentioning the takeaway they eat may give the impression that that's all we eat, but since posting home cooking in a takeaway thread would be off topic, most of them put it in the What Are You Eating thread.

edit: Whoops wrong BB code :P

Nothing wrong with eating take out or at restaurants... some stuff you just make at home. For example... Chinese food. I will guarantee you that whatever stove you have at home is not going to make awesome +++AWESOME+++ Chinese food, whatever your skill is. Its all about firepower baby! :<

there is stuff i will only make at home, but there is a pizza place near to me called sorrentos that makes flatbread pizzas that i would stab small children to eat. not only is their crust like the perfect marriage between chewy and crunchy but they'll put pretty much anything on the fucking pizza. personal favorite? hamburg, pine nuts and pesto (and i usually hate hamburg on pizza, but there? soooo good!)

I mainly go to burger joints if I'm thinking of eating fast food.

If I want a sandwich, I can make one at home. Cafe Rio is great Mexican, but it's always busy and it's more so dining food than fast food. Chick-fil-A is good, but the only one around is in the mall. I can't handle Arby's anymore, and the only good Chinese restaurant I've dined at is back home.

The best takeaway food I have around me here in NYC is from souvlaki carts or the local taco truck, which is also the best Mexican food I've had since coming here.

I don't go to fast food places except Subway. Back when I did go to fast food places, I loved me Culver's butter burgers and fried cheese curds.

See we don't have any of that side of the street hot dog stand kind of de4al here (Maybe down in London, next time I'm down I'll have a look)

Closest we have is things like these:

Catering_Van.jpg

We've got in town one that makes (pretty nice) bespoke sandwiches, and a sausage one. Which is overpriced.

But the idea of the hot dog cart on a roadside in NYC is so quaint n...hollywood.

Street hot dogs are bleh to the max. The taco truck I mentioned is very similar to the trailer in the pic you posted; it has a whole kitchen inside.

But, yeah; food carts are everywhere here in Manhattan, everything from gourmet takeaway with frou-frou ingredients to hot dogs to Mexican. I dig it the most.
