Piracy

Sony is doing it with their All-Stars game. Buy it on the PS3 and you can play it on your Vita. Steam also does it with plenty of games, letting you own both the Mac and PC version when you buy it. But like I said, we're at a point where it's the exception rather than the norm in the industry.

I was going to post a status update but its sort of relevant to this thread...

I've been itching to play Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim. I played it years ago (My first Ys game) with a PS2 copy that I have/had. I'm not sure if I still have it (Might be at SLO) or if I sold it. Either way, I can't play it to refresh my memory about the game. So off I go to find a copy to download since a fan patch exist. Problem is now that I think about it, I can't think of any trustworthy torrent/file sharing sites that still exist. Most of the ones off the top of my head got nuked as you are all aware. Now I'm unsure if I should or should not download from unknown sites. So I suppose this is a small victory/hindrance setup by the folks who shutdown the big file sharing sites.

Still though... its not a huge leap to try out different trackers. So the wheel keeps spinning... Also, speaking of fan patches... I may go that route to get my Ys PC versions. Importing is going to be a bitch though and no second hand since it completely defeats the purpose of buying it...

I suggest you ask around for some good private trackers (ask people who torrent, since finding them on google can be difficult at times). I'd send you an invite for the one I used, but I think my account got closed due to inactivity :P It's a shame, really, because I used it for some rare and obscure stuff you can't find anymore, like Cosmology of Kyoto.

  • 1 month later...

I would just like to note that I'm currently in a position where if I buy XCom or Dishonored, I can't play them for over two days. But if I pirate them I could play them immediately.

These companies talk so much about preventing zero-day and first-day piracy. And then stuff like this happens where a large region can't buy the game for several days while there are pirate copies on the net.

Seems like smart business...

The problem is that they still need to keep the brick and mortar retailers happy and they, themselves, like to have a set release date so competition for sales can begin on the same day in the same region. I agree it's silly but until the reliance on brick and mortar stores drops, we'll have to put up with it.

Yeah. I don't get why Friday is the regular release date in Europe. They have no problem changing that for big game releases like Call of Duty, and Final Fantasy XIII. Publishers would benefit from making it the same day, as that three day gap that takes place can turn off a lot of people if the game has major problems. Rage probably lost quite an amount of sales on PC in Europe when word came of its problems to people, thanks to that three day delay.

Yup. Friday is entertainment release date, get highest initial sales(assumedly due to folks/kids being off work/school). In fact I'm pretty sure most global releases are done on Friday as opposed to a Tuesday. I don't quite understand the logistics behind not doing a same day global release but I imagine there's some old fashioned tradition thing going on.

So wait two days?

So wait two days?

This is what I'm doing. But I have several friends who decided not to wait.

The point is that if the goal of modern DRM is to reduce zero-day and first-day piracy, launching games in Europe two to three days later is shooting themselves in the foot.

To put it simply, any time you're making the pirated version more attractive to a consumer compared to the version they pay money for, either by making your DRM too restrictive, having heaps of retailer-exclusive pre-order DLC, or anything else, you're encouraging piracy. And if you're trying to make money off of selling games, that is probably a dumb idea.

Worst thing that could happen with a leak is that I, a legit customer, finds out that the media is shit which prompts me to cancel my pre-order or I stop considering to buy said media. As for pirates, they're just going to pirate the leak or an actual rip since pirates are going to be pirates. Leaks are more or less not under the control of policies or anything. Its just some sleezybag working with or just somehow got close to the media who leaks it.
