Doctor Who

So who here is a watcher of Doctor Who? I know a fair chunk of you are Americans and tend to get it delayed (Though I assume you guys at least get the Christmas specials on time)

How are people getting on with Matt Smiths doctor? I'm finding him much more likeable than I originally thought. With his cry of geranimo in Tennants final episode I assumed they were aiming for a goofier more kid friendly doctor, especially with Sarah Jane being aimed right at kids.

Thankfully it's now Moffat who is in charge, and he's the guy who wrote Blink, so it's certainly not in the kiddie realm anymore.

Moffat is awesome. (Anyone interested should watch Jekyll and Sherlock, also done by Moffat)

And to finish this post off the trailer for the upcoming Xmas Special:

Anyone wanting convincing to start watching doctor who, or advice on where to start just yell up.

I'm not a fan of Matt Smith, don't like his Doctor as much as others, but the show itself has just gone uphill with Moffat at the front, who is a fantastic writer and should have been head of writing while Tennant was around. My two favorite episodes from modern Doctor Who are definitely The Empty Child and Blink, both by Moffat. He actually made the show scary, like it should be.

Tennant is a great actor overall and I think he was a fantastic Doctor, and could have been so much better. Damn you Davies! It wasn't bad to watch at the time, but looking back and comparing storylines from Stone's Doctor to Tennants, they where horrible at times.

Definitely will be catching the Xmas special.

I finally caught up with Season 5 about two weeks ago. God I love Doctor Who. I, too, am having issues with Matt Smith...maybe. I can't decide if it's him or if it's the general direction the show went. I'm all for having a full story arc from beginning to end with fun clever hints hidden into each of the stories, but I had such a hard time with The Doctor and Amy's interactions, or The Doctor's ridiculous mood swings (going from loving humanity to hating it to loving it...granted, that probably only happened in one episode, but it stuck with me). Perhaps this season was just a set up for the grand schemes that Moffat has in mind and simply was to ease us into a new, darker Doctor Who. Should be interesting to see what happens.

All that said, the last three episodes were so fantastic and really give me hope for next season. I'm hoping all my dislikes are simply an adjustment to Matt Smith and will be assuaged as soon as the Christmas Episode hits. Can't wait!

I'll be the lone dissenting voice and say I don't care for Doctor Who at all. Despite the likes of Blink, I cannot shake the perception that I should be approximately 10 years younger than I am to really appreciate it and be it's original target audience. It didn't help I've never quite been drawn to Tennant and from the brief clips I saw thought Eccleston was doing ok.

All that aside, I might have to watch this Xmas episode just to see Katherine Jenkins. That woman is a goddess.

Thankfully the new writers nipped that in the bud by marrying off this companion right away. I've really enjoyed all of the writing this season; it is just the new Doctor that I'm still having trouble warming up to. He gets more endearing the more the show goes on, though.

I haven't finished this season yet but I'll agree the writers are doing a pretty good job. The writing isn't as good as it during the doctor's time with Donna but it's still ok. It's the new doctor that I still haven't grown fond of. I mean he's charming and has a cool bow tie but he just can't pull off the emotion of anger.

Being from the US, I didn't watch Who as a kid - rather, I had Star Trek.

Became introduced to the show with Christopher Eccleston (sp?), and despite the silly effects and occasionally cheesy bits, fell in love with the show.

David Tennant IS the Doctor, to me. I mean, he's just absolutely brilliant. He is.

So of course the moment I saw the mug shot for Matt Smith, the actor to replace Tennant, I went mad for a good while.

Anyway, I've had time to cool off, and now recall how skeptical I was about Tennant replacing Eccleston - and look how that turned out.

Last month, I FINALLY finished Tennant's last season, and I have three more specials to go, and the first Matt Smith Netflix disc waiting at my house after that.

Going to finally catch up this week and see, I suppose. While apprehensive, I'm also fairly excited - I've heard some pretty good things about the latest season, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

That said, I sort of skipped the other posts in this thread, and will, until I catch up - don't want to spoil anything by accident, on account of my not being caught up.

Yeah I was similar, so I too weaned off my initial dislike of Matt Smiths doctor until I'd given him a few episodes to prove himself. And he did well enough.

Btw when you say three specials, does that include The End of Time? Like the year hiatus Doctor Who had while Tennant was doing theatre work. So there was like only 3 episodes that year.

Ohh boy.

I just watched the Waters of Mars.

Goddamn, that was incredible.

Reminiscent of Sunshine (which I loved).

And then the creepy ass water zombies.

But even better, the doctor being so angry at his inability to help them.

And then! Their rage, once he has.

Last, that vocal score at the end.

Man. I am going to miss Tennant as the Doctor so much, I don't even know.

See Water of Mars was good. But it seemed like a rushed out concept RTD had with the whole 'Time Lord Victoriuos' thing. the Doctor trying to become master of time, affecting events just because there's no one to enforce the rules n such. I think it would of done much better if developed over a season.

Love it. Grew up on it. Still my favorite sci-fi hero. Who-related tattoos are on the possibility list.

I'm a bit lukewarm on Smith. To his credit, he has a amazing naturalism for the role; off the bat he feels like the Doctor, and his choice to play a sort of mega-composite Doctor is interesting. Still, it's sort of like he sets the par. Also, with the way that Season 5 ended, I'm really looking forward to what happens next. Some of the best times on the show have been when there was more of an ensemble cast (2, 5), and the current group shows considerable promise.

Waters of Mars is a...problematic episode. The point of it, basically, is to serve as an emotional counterpoint for another episode, Fires of Pompeii, but it kind of falls flat in that regard, for the same reason that

the final fate of Donna Noble

falls flat: a lack of bravery on the part of the writers to pull the damn trigger after extended threats about it, a problem that, for its other weaknesses, old Who did not have.

I'm not big on Tennant, but some of that is RTD's writing, and some of that is that I prefer a different kind of Doctor, and some of that is my irritation at dealing with people who were Tennant fans rather than Doctor Who fans.

And yes, Pertwee is the Doctor. (Though, the idea of complaining about Rose, but then citing Pertwee...come on, Jo?) I used to consider Davidson my favorite, but after seeing some of the DVD releases with episodes that I haven't watched in ages, I'm compelled to give that to Pertwee, especially early Pertwee.

So, my thoughts on the Christmas special. It was a nice episode, the kind of thing you love to watch at Christmas, so in that aspect it succeeded. I dunno, I just get this feeling that had it been at any other time it wouldn't have held up as well... not sure why, I'd probably have to reflect on it.

Torchwood: New World could be interesting. Though I'm wondering what an Amercian spin on it will do. If it'll be a british production made in america, or an american production using a british show.

Apparently The Silent are in the first couple of epsidoes (2-parter or something) and the semi-TARDIS from the episode with whats his face (the football dude) is owned by them.

I wonder if they're a remnant of time lords to have the ability to make TARDIS like ships and to blow up and control the doctors TARDIS.
