1) What's the GOT thread "rules"? (I would say as given time delay n stuff there's a statue of spoilers that extends past the first few hours of airing)

2)

Nope, because as Matt Smiths Doctor points out, John Hurts "Doctor" wasn't fit to carry the name, so he's not technically a "Doctor" (so will likely get a proper name come 50th)

The GoT thread is current episode spoilers. Obviously, since you lucky ducks in the UK get it at 12pm pst and we have to wait till 5pm pst / 8pm est, maybe we could just wait till 6pm PST to post spoilers. Or not. Maybe the timezones complicate things too much. REGARDLESS, it's been a week so I'm posting without spoilers.

Yeah the impression I got from hearing The Doctor talk, while John Hurt's character was the same man as The Doctor, he wasn't "The Doctor" because he did something truly terrible (kill his entire people + daleks) which goes against everything The Doctor believes in. HOWEVER, then the title screen comes up and it specifically calls him The Doctor. So I guess technically he is the 9th incarnation of The Doctor but he is not the 9th Doctor... my head hurts....

My impression is: He's the 9th regeneration of "John Smith", whereas Eccleston is the 10th regeneration. However Eccleston was the 9th time John Smith called himself Doctor

. The show just used "The Doctor" to name John Hurt as we have no other name for The Doctor to go off, and giving the true name would ruin surprise of 50th if he's the Valeyard or something.

Also as far as Time War goes I think he killed a lot more than time lords and daleks.

John Smith is the name he uses as a cover on earth. Since we don't know his real name (which would be unlikely to be written in roman lettering anyway) I just used it as a placeholder.

Valeyard is the Doctors final regeneration, and also the "evil" one. Which would imply he's the one participating in the battle shown last episode. Great Intelligence mentions it as one of his many names, though if that is foreboding or just name-dropping reference is yet to be seen. Only issue with Hurt being Valeyard is heavy implication he's 9th incarnation not last. However it could be the case of Doctor/Johnn Smith assuming the name Valeyard for several incarnations when he's not feeling very Doctory.

Ah, okay. Thanks. Is The Valeyard a concept that was introduced at some point in the revival or is it something that's been part of the lore for a long time?

Also, The Doctor has a maximum of 12 regenerations, correct? Doesn't this new "secret" one with John Hurt impy that he technically can't regenerate after Matt Smith?

12 regenerations, which means he gets one more after Matt Smith (13 Doctors total).
The Valeyard, as far as I know, was used with one of the old Doctors. I'd never really heard him mentioned before, only seen his name on wikis and whatnot. My understanding wasn't that he was the final Doctor, but an "amalgamation of the Doctor from between his twelfth and final incarnations".

Yeah Valeyard is old Who, and the 12 regenerations thing has sort of been phased out in recent eras. Sort of more as an implied cultural/legal thing than a biological limit (The MAster has been granted extra regenerations, and been brought back before now, and Tennants references have a few thousand regenerations in Sarah Jane Adventures). Ultimately as long as the show remains popular BBC and the shows writers will find a way to wiggle around the original 12 regens. Already brought back n wiped out the Daleks several dozen times in the new Who alone.

Yeah... also Cumberbatch is a big time Hollywood actor now and probably doesn't want to commit to 13 episodes a year when he could be making movies.
My question to you, Dean, is how known were David Tennant and Matt Smith to the general UK public before they got the role?

Well Tennants biggest role pre-Who would be Casanova mini-series

Matt Smith pre-Who had been in Secret Diary of a Call Girl with Billie Piper (as mentioned a few pages back), but was pretty unknown.

Which generally means if it's an actor you can pull off the top of your head, it's likely not the actor they'll be using.

That's what I figured. Might be time for a lady Doctor? A red headed Time Lady? Or maybe it's time the Doctor went black? Course once you go black, you never go back.
Anyways, if they just shot the 50th anniversary special, the Christmas special must be getting ready to shoot, which means they probably don't have a ton of time to cast the 12th Doctor. Also if the Valeyard exists "between the 12th and 13th" and John Hurt is the 9th, that might mean name dropping the Valeyard in the season finale wasn't just fan service...

IGN posted their top 10 choices for The Doctor.

I'm only familiar with Ben Whishaw from I'm Not There, but he definitely looks the part of The Doctor. I think he'd be a safe choice, but a good choice.

As for as Idris Elba goes, I've only seen him in Thor, but a blackman as The Doctor would be good to see, and a tough as nails black guy would definitely mix things up.

Robb Stark would also be an interesting choice, maybe because he's one of the only actors in their that I'm familiar with, so I can picture it better, I don't know if I'd be in favour of it, but it'd be interesting none-the-less.

And finally, David Tennant. I could totally see Moffat doing that... I just don't know if David Tennant would come back.

See Robert Carlyle would be good, but given he's currently one of the lead actors in Once Upon a Time I can't see him even attempting to audition, but if OUAT was to be dropped he'd be great. Especially as I think the show could do with jumping back up the ages again.

David Tennant I think is in a mood where he loves his time as The Doctor, and would jump at chances for cameos, but won't go back full time.
