Doctor Who

I went back and watched the 50th to spruce myself up on stuff since I imagine some of that'll be referenced. (though Skaro carries on coming back with nary a word on how)

Also I thought I recognised one of the Time Lords so had a look and he's the maester from Winterfell. So that's another on the Doctor Who/Game of Thrones. (Originally thought might be Sam Carters dad from Stargate. I know he's in that Continuum show as well)

Oh yeah, Peter Jackson posted a video this morning that featured Peter Capaldi and I can't work out if it means he's directing an episode of Doctor Who or not, it was kind of inconclusive. Maybe it's actually part one of three for what should be a short video saying he's doing Doctor Who.

I'd say it's high up there as it's a very similar concept behind the monster which is while the move slowly, they just keep coming and eventually you're going to stop and it'll get you. I know there was a book I read recently-ish with a similar concept for death. That we all have a personal death that's constantly heading towards us and one day we'll stop for a rest and they'll be right there saying hi. It ties in well with Doctor Who too since he's always running, it's what he does. Also first time he was there we was totally in the nud.

Christmas episode will have River Song (and Matt Lucas too but I've a feeling most abroad won't know him apart from Tweedle Dee and Dum in the newer Alice in Wonderland. Give Little Britain a watch).

(which given they've posted this and not anything else suggests that the Peter Jackson sketch was purely a sketch)

As far as Doctor Who season finales go, that was definitely the best.

A fitting end for Clara! At this point, I'd almost rather watch a show with Clara as a Doctor. Though if they ever want these characters to return they'll need to do it sooner as both the actresses, especially Maisie, will age out of the roles. Cool to see the original TARDIS interior, I just don't know how I feel about a TARDIS being a diner.

A little strange the return to Gallifrey was so anti-climactic. And I don't understand how the timelords couldn't have reached out to The Doctor since The Day of the Doctor, if they still existed in the universe.

I think it was implied they were hiding.

You don't like it being a restaurant? A restaurant, at the end of the universe?

Also I imagine the Timelords kept quiet since they're essentially

1. Rather afraid of the Doctor wanting to exact his revenge upon them for the Time War. He did at least in one version of time kill them all, so he could do it "again"

2. Essentially in self-imposed exile. As Clara noted everyone hates them.

Hmm, not sure what I think of the Christmas special. Not really very Christmasy. I guess I did enjoy a few spots here n there though, such as The Doctor really going at it when he gets the chance to do his "It's bigger on the inside!" bit.

Plot was all over the place and I really don't get how in one episode they had River both being all "I use the Doctor cos hey TARDIS and other fringe benefits" and then later being "I weally wuv the Doctor". Like, are you using him as you are all the other characters, or are you genuinely in love with the Doctor. I'd be fine with it if this is pre-marrying the Doctor but it's clearly near the end of her life so she's clearly married to him, gone on all the adventures we've seen them do, so should be fairly grown as a character.

Also I've a feeling it's the sonic trowel with the trowel bit removed, but pretty sure 12 got a new sonic (Which is nice cos he was still using 11's for a fair while)

Steven Moffat is quitting to be taken over by guy who did Broadchurch, and there will only be the Xmas special this year, no Doctor Who until 2017.

Broadchurch season 1 was great. I haven't seen season 2 but it probably should have stayed a one season thing, but I'm imagining that wasn't Chibnall's decision. I like Moffat, Doctor Who was much better with him, so it sucks to see him leave but fresh blood might be a good thing. I'm going to assume this will be Capaldi's last season as well, so Chibnall should have a completely clean slate.

The whole no episodes except for the Christmas special in 2016 is absolute BULLOCKS, did I use that word right? Jesus Christ BBC, get your fucking shit together. There's no reason there shouldn't be a new season of Doctor Who every year. At least give us specials throughout the year or something like that.

It's "Bollocks". sorta pronounced "baw-looks" but quite quickly.

Bear in mind Season 4, which saw it shift from RTD to Moffat, also had a delay with just 4 "specials" running that year instead. I imagine there's a lot of things to suddenly reorganise that would delay filming a fair bit.

Also BBC do have their shit together, the people that hold the purse strings don't (lot of crappy politics going on). I imagine that doesn't help much and likely would have been no new Who this year regardless. They've got the new Chris Evans Top Gear this year too which I imagine being their other tentpole title is likely to be drawing on funds a fair bit.

So, now that we're two seasons in, how do you guys feel about Capaldi?

I kinda lost interest after a few episodes in his first season (think it was the one about Robin Hood robots or something stupid like that?), mostly because unlike Tennant and Smith he didn't seem like an obvious and immediate improvement over his predecessor. Smith's run (well, his first two seasons) made the show go from pretty good to one of my all-time favorites, so Capaldi had big shoes to fill.

The reason I'm asking is because I resubbed to Netflix to watch Daredevil a couple months back and haven't watched anything other than Ant-Man since. I just noticed Doctor Who's on it, so I figured it's about time I got up to date on the show.  Am I in for a disappointment or a pleasant surprise?

I'm quite mixed. I think Capaldi himself is a rather good Doctor, and given his pedigree not surprising. He's playing an "old" Doctor rather than one that's trying to stay forever young. He's reconciled of sorts with his past self, he's sort of got a vague mission in finding Gallifrey n such (though doesn't really act on it much tbh).

However the writing has been all over the place. Heaven Sent was a great episode, like up there with Blink n the like. But there's been some total trash too. Clara definitely hung around too long. The Zygon episode was very mixed, it sorta got better but there was some super questionable choices in it.

Missy was good. Me was an alright concept as a character though I think Masie Williams was slightly too young to play (also like Clara was around a bit too long).

Oh the 2D-3D episode...err I forget the name of the monster but that was pretty cool too. (I googled, they're "Boneless" n the episode is "Flatline")

Now Coleman is gone I'm sorta hopeful for the show, she kinda fucked it up a bit by ruining the Xmas episode by changing her mind midway through (the actress not the character). Moffat I think needs to stop being show runner too, which I believe his tenure has ended in that regard.

I see. The more pessimistic Doctor sounds like something I would probably enjoy, to be honest. Now that you guys mention it, I do vaguely remember some hints at him being a bit darker in the early eps. Disappointing to hear that the writing is hit and miss, though. I thought it was pretty spot on during most of Smith's run and is probably the main thing that made me enjoy it so much. I really loved the whole cracks in the universe thing and the silence will fall arc where almost every single episode added something to the overall narrative. That made the show a lot more enjoyable for me. Then there was all the build up to the anniversary special. It was pretty good stuff.

Sounds like there's still some worthwhile stuff in the last two seasons, though. Guess I'll have to check them out soon. Thanks!

Oh if you're into the arcs and such then you'll like this, that's what Moffat revels in. I'm not a huge fan they get all a bit contrived and with the final series it's a bit all over the place I guess cos they had to rewrite Clara in and generally change the series to get rid of her. I did like that the latest series had all but one episode as multi-part stories which is kinda how they did it in ye-olden days Doctor Who.

just watched the first episode of Class. Was a lot better than I was expecting, and it's a lot darker than I expected too, which I guess I had my guard down cos I thought "hey it's set at a school", but it's on BBC3 not CBBC so yeah there's a couple students killed in this n one maimed. It's sorta buffy-esque (they reference Buffy in the show, and also once upon a time and vampire diaries. Also Downton Abbey but not in relation to their situation). Quite decent flow and pace to it, like it was very well put together in a notable way. The teacher is pretty great.

Also got to see the new sonic screwdriver in action too. So yeah I'd say give it a shot.

Yeah it was ok. I thought maybe some of the gore was a little much, between this and Torchwood I don't know why Doctor Who spinoffs (besides SJA of course) have to be "look how much darker we are than Doctor Who!!!". I don't really care about any of the kids yet though. If they can make me care about them that might increase my interest. The Doctor was great in episode 1, if nothing else it made the anticipation for season 10 even worse.

Also the only thing worse than watching soccer is watching actors pretending to play soccer. Play a real sport, soccer kid!

A bunch of teens at Coal Hill Academy, which is the school Clara and Danny taught at and the school that the Doctor's granddaughter Susan went to, fight aliens and stuff because there's like, some sort of rip in space and time there. They also deal with teen stuff!!

Also the Doctor was a caretaker there too, as he makes a point of in the first episode.

Oh it used to be Coal Hill School back in the day, but yeah now it's an Academy which is a bit :P (also Doctor makes note on, mainly in a "I guess they didn't fix up the tears in time n space when they renovated").

I haven't even bothered yet (partly cos I'm at my grans n she'll have watched something else). Might grab it when I'm back home though to put on the background. Not expecting much tbh, the christmas specials do tend to be a bit hit n miss, last decent one was the last Matt Smith one.

I hear they had on the Goku from the Dragonball movie in this.

Oh there's a trailer for the next series kicking around but I'm a bit limited in being able to embed if anyone else wants to do the honours.

Honestly, if you're itching for some Doctor Who I can't recommend Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency enough. Dirk basically is The Doctor, if everyone hated The Doctor (including his companion). The actor who plays him, Samuel Barnett should be considered for the roll of the 13th, especially if the rumours of the BBC wanting to return to the Smith/Tennant style Doctors are true. It's so glaring that I looked into the books the series is based off and they started as Doctor Who scripts in the 80s, so that explains that. Frodo is in it, he's pretty great and it's filmed in my hometown of Vancouver! Plus there's a corgi. Edited by Mr. TCP!
