deanb
Nope. There's potentially something in the SQL table but hardly ideal to go through a table that has tens of thousands of entries. And even if that had been the case just mods knowing when people edited a post would do little on a public forum. Basically the options on editing permissions are: Can edit Y/N, Time Restriction, Show "Edited by" Y/N, Edit Topic Titles Y/N. Unfortunately no grace period such as the "ninja edit" window Reddit has, I do agree that'd be useful, though nothing wrong with proofreading. On here it used to be zero editing, we opened it up but with a time window of a 10 minutes or so.Then after incidents we enabled the "Edited by" (rather than straight up remove it). After certain folks left we removed the time restrictions, but left the marker. Certainly been no repeats, but there's no reason to given the "Edited by" shows up. In the grand scheme of things I'd rather the minor irritant of a bit of grey text on the bottom of edited posts than dealing with the major irritant that come with people covertly editing what they're typing and stirring shit. The full functionality of editing is still there. Incidentally right below the "Editing" set of settings is "Deleting", and most of them are "No" for obvious reasons, but I'm pretty sure "Hide" aka "Soft-delete" is meant to be enabled, can any of you remove your own posts? It should be a button that's faded next to "Quote" options, along with Report. Edited April 24, 2013 by Deanb Technically Ethan should be adding this in when he edits stuff. TheFlyingGerbil
yes, there is a hide option.
TheMightyEthan
Normally I do check the box to show the "Edited by", I was just making a joke in this specific instance. Every once in a while I'll forget to check it, but I try to remember to do it.
TCP
I have a suggestion! Not sure if it's been suggested before but whatever here goes. Rather than just let you keep writing statuses/replies for infinity and than arbitrarily cutting your post once you send it, that the forum will stop letting you type in the box so you know you've written too much. Make it happen, Dean! Like my post if you agree, club baby seals if you disagree!
TheMightyEthan
That would be fantastic, but I imagine it's beyond the ability of dean to correct. More an issue with the forum software.

My preferred method of this is a counter that appears when you're near the limit that then shows how many characters you are over the limit. deanb
You find me someone that can code PHP, I'll find you a status update counter. It's something that annoys me too, there's unfortunately no tool for it that I've found. I could field a query on the forum forum, but there's a major version number change coming soon so not sure anything that'd apply now might not break/be resolved in future. edit: There's the minor alternative of using the threads with the 1000+ word limit on them?
TCP
I hereby propose that we do away with both the Retro/Classic Games sub-forum and the Mobile Games sub-forum, and absorb them into the General Gaming Chat and Multi-Platform Games sub-forums. I recommend this because no one ever posts in those sub-forums, which make this place look deader than it is to any lurkers/possible new members. Also, when people do post in those sub-forums, no one notices because no one ever looks there. All the threads would fit well in the General Gaming Chat and Multi-Platform Games sub-forums. I would also recommend deleting the Minecraft Server sub-forum because it's been dead for 3+ years. Thank you.
TheMightyEthan
Seconded.
deanb
Fair enough point on Minecraft (I've not removed it, just shoved it into different super hidden part of the forum). On the other two: Nope. It's worth noting the same applies to Xbox (which has threads last posted in 2011 on its main page). And on the point of not reading: As noted many times right at the top of the forum is "View New Content", click it and hey presto there is the new content. You can even filter it and save that filter to even hide certain sub-forums.
Mal
I'm unsure if I asked this before so here it is: Can Soundcloud embedding or whatever be a thing? Ton of good music is stuck on Soundcloud and having them play over in the Music thread makes it a bit easier for folks to tune in. It's a small thing but it's neat. And if you can and do do it, let us hope that it doesn't break threads like my last suggestion of webm files.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Both Soundcloud and Bandcamp embedding are sorely needed.
Mr. GOH!
The forum has been acting weird whenever I try to post or reply to or upvote anything; it just hangs there, the three dots pulsing forever and ever. When I reload the page after waiting ten or so seconds, though, my reply or post or upvote has gone through. It's annoying.

When I reload the page after waiting ten or so seconds, though, my reply or post or upvote has gone through. It's annoying. I've had that for a few weeks now. Basically whenever I post anything, be it replies or status updates it hangs. Almost always posts though, even if I close the tab whilst it's getting its shit together. TheFlyingGerbil
I've had that for about as long as the new content button hasn't worked (a long time) but I'm hoping everything will sort itself out when the forum software is updated by our benevolent overlord. deanb
Yeah its been like that for months now. I've no idea what's causing it or I'd have fixed it by now (I get it too, it's annoying). It is posting btw, as soon as you click "Post" or whatever it's usually done. The green dots is just like a mini-reload of the page to show the new content. Something just isn't triggering it right. You can just refresh manually for the much same result (though part of the mini-refresh is refreshing your cache for the page, which might not happen for all browsers natural refresh, so try shift+r) I could potentially update it some point this month though last I played with it locally, it'll mess a fair chunk up. Like this is a major overhaul, way more major than I figured parts would be. 4.1 is due in October so I'll give that a spin, some of the updates seem to bring back older functionality (a biggy btw being embedding HTML5 video)
TheFlyingGerbil
There's no point in making a load of work fit yourself and updating if it's just going to make a load of problems that are worse than the ones we have now. I guess my problem is I still naively see updates in a positive light. I'm assuming .1 updates would concentrate on fixing issues introduced in a .0 update rather than new features so fingers crossed for that. deanb
They do 3-digit versions. So 3.4.6 would be: Version 3 of the software Update 4 of that, usually newer incremental features and such and 6 would be the bug n security fixes. It comes with a lot of new stuff like responsive design (rather than the hampered mobile theme), and for myself proper delta updates that work in the admin panel rather than having to download the latest, and update through filezilla n do a bunch of back n forth to run the update n what not. And a generally more shinier modern look. Oh and a new editor too which is rather nice to work with. Unfortunately some of the stuff we're all used to are hacks or plug-ins. Cos it's a new major version the plug-ins don't work. And I wouldn't know enough to be able to figure the hacks myself (e.g our frontpage has a status bar on the side. That to me is the big one, I figure much the same for everyone else.)

deanb
I added it as a new field (since it'll otherwise break existing things). Also pruned some stuff like Raptr and AIM/MSN. 2
