Let see, a tl;dw...

  1. RAM prices is an issue since GPU's DRAM also comes from the same fab labs.
  2. Supply and demand
    1. It's just after the holiday so stocks are already low so they get eaten up
    2. It's a new year with a new hardware refresh coming soon
    3. It takes at least 2 months for a request of supply increase to be available, assuming ship shipment (cheaper) instead of say air shipment ($$$).
      1. This has a chance for the manufactures to be stuck with a HUGE supply of GPUs that don't sell if crypto-mining crashes.
        1. Combine this with taking up space and time from the new generation of hardware
  3. I might have missed some stuff.

Seems like it's just an absolute perfect storm that fucked us. We might get a concrete response(s) from manufactures say by May/June/July once they examine the market some more. Like right now, if they are responding now, there will be no impact until March or April. Then after gauging how well it works, a more proper response is out by May-July.

Also it's so hard to tell if the mining market is going to continue (aka switch coins to mine as they go) or will it just collapse. I'm seeing both sides yelling at each other with valid points.

My aunt asked me to fix her laptops, turns out, they don't really have any issues except for the fact that Windows 10 was installed for her at the office she worked at, now that she no longer works there, both are warning about the license expiring soon. Can I switch to a home/pro license from an already installed version of Windows or will this require a clean install?

What edition of Windows 10? Does your aunt have access to the admin account of her local machine?

You can enter in a new product key rather than a clean install. I'm just confused why a company would install anything on a employee-owned machine, or give away a company machine without wiping most everything.

Windows 10 Pro, she does have access to the admin account. I asked her and apparently, she took her laptops for her own stuff, and the IT people at her office went all "hey, we can install the newest Windows on your machine, if you want!", and since my aunt doesn't know much about this stuff she just agreed, thinking the newest version would be the best, and so I guess they just installed it using their license keys? :bun-dunno:

Edit: Found how to enter the new product key, cheers dudes! :P

I'm afraid I already know the answer, but is there anything I can do if I start getting emails from sites welcoming me to accounts I didn't sign up for?  A few days ago I got one from Epic Games and tonight I got one from some survey site.  The thought of someone out there using my email to sign up for shit makes me feel dirty.  Why even do that?  What's the benefit?

Is your email something common? If it's not obvious spammy shit then it could just be a mistake. One of my emails is just firstname dot lastname at gmail but apparently gmail ignores all the dots, so I get all the mails sent to any version of that address regardless of how many or where the dots are. My name isn't exactly uncommon and some idiot in the area seems to think the version without a dot belongs to him, so I occasionally get some of his mail. Mostly confirmation mails for his interac money transfers and once even something from his ISP. I have no way of contacting him so I just delete them.

I having moved from Chrome to Opera recently and being generally happy with it besides a few niggles I decided to give firefox a go. I use 2 finger scrolling - drag 2 fingers down anywhere on my trackpad to scroll - and it works fine in all my browsers, and adds a little scroll bar to the cursor when you use it. However, in firefox randomly it leaves the scrollbar part of the curror on screen, and that is persistent, staying there if I close the window, switch to another program etc. and when I move my cursor over it it shows a loading spinning wheel. Anyone come across this problem and know how to fix it?

My laptop is doing something scary. Every now and then when I turn it on, a purple, sometimes greenish tint starts to slowly raise up from the bottom of the monitor until it covers the whole screen. It's a rare occurrence, and it goes away if I shut everything down and do it again, but the fact it happens at all is alarming. Anyone else ever seen something like this? It's gotta be hardware related but that pisses me off. This laptop isn't that old, but it's old enough to be out of warranty.

So this might seem like a weird question but what do you guys set your maximum processor state to? My cpu hit 100 degrees a while ago so I checked it and it was set to 100%, which apparently enables a turbo mode that improves performance but raises temps. Setting it to just 99% will disable this and lower temps, which I did, but I'm just wondering if 100% is the norm.

Oh lawd, last night was frustrating.

So the only thing I didn't do with my new setup was restore some old docs and etc. A coworker of mine offered up his copy of the Windows Easy Transfer which, as I remember it, was a great assist for Windows 7. It does a good job recognizing the appropriate files and folders... perhaps too well.

Easy Transfer was discontinued for Windows 10, though you can run it on the OS. Problem is, with the feature set of 10, things aren't going to cleanly go back into place. The most obnoxious and unsolved issue I ran into was how a system file was thrown into OneDrive! Try as I may, even with elevated privileges, I could not remove it. Also, my Restore Point was removed somehow so at the end of the day I said screw it and reinstalled Windows.

I didn't have much added back onto my setup at that point, so it came down to getting OS updates and graphics drivers once more. Thankfully I put important folders on a separate storage device from the backup, so when I do want them, it'll be a simple copy-paste.

Hmm...

I'm trying to decide if I should give my brother-in-law my old GTX 760. I haven't heard back from him yet on whether the PC I'm building for him should be good enough for gaming. I'm assuming his answer will be no since I doubt he'd have the time to play games, but if I have a GPU on hand and would only need to up his processor to something like a Ryzen 5 2600 instead of a Ryzen 3 2200G, that's not nearly as expensive as getting a brand new GTX 1660 (or 1660Ti).

I'm just thinking if I should even bother putting a 6 year-old GPU into his tower. ?

Trying to plan what I want to have in my PC when I upgrade it (hopefully later this year :P ) and I noticed a rather weird thing when it comes to pricing of GPUs, in particular, the 2080ti is in some cases, available at the same price as the 2080 super and in some other cases it's actually cheaper, hell, some models, like the EVGA 2080ti Black are at around the same price as a 2070 super. Don't know if this is just on the Mexican side though. :P

Not that I'm looking at a 2080ti for my build right now, just something I stumbled upon while comparing prices/models. :P

Can anyone recommend a good wireless mouse? Something that will last for a long time and has at least two extra buttons on the side? I've been using the Logitech M510 for a while now which is frustrating because it's comfortable and works very well for a while but it keeps fucking breaking! I've been through three of these things now and only kept using it because it was always covered by warranty, but I think I need to start looking at alternatives. I'd like to keep it under $100, but I am willing to spend a little more if it means I can get something that doesn't fall apart in a year.

My father's printer has stopped working as a printer. :P

It's an HP2510 which he hadn't used for a while as ink is stupidly expensive, he finally bought some new ink cartridges, brand new, HP brand, etc, but when he tries to print something it fails saying it has a configuration error.

I've already uninstalled everything, drivers, software, etc, reinstalled everything, updated the drivers, and now it appears in device manager, but it appears only as a scanner, the thing itself can still scan and copy stuff, just won't print anything.

I've changed USB cable, and tried it on my PC and it's the same, it is recognised only as a scanner, and even the HP software sees it as a scanner only no sign of its printer side anywhere. :P

Is there anything I can do or is the thing toast? :P
