Faiblesse Des Sens
I think people worrying about 2TB drives being two 1TB platters was just tinfoil hatting after all of this time.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, HDDs having more than one platter isn't a new thing.
Mal
2TB it is. Oh, WD or Seagate. Back to this damning choice. Since I'm in no hurry, I think I can wait for a few months till Cyber Monday or so. I know the Seagate can get down to $70 but that actually makes me worry... we;ll see soon enough. Faiblesse Des Sens
WD! But yeah if you're no rush wait until you see a crazy deal. Personally I bought a WD 2TB Red a few months back. I think it's basically just a 5400rpm version of the black. It's for media so I don't need the speed. I'm saving that money for a SSD. CorgiShinobi
Western Digital pretty much always. Anyway, would there happen to be a handy guide to Windows 8 I could access online or something of that sort? I feel like I'm half-assing my way through the OS. My work does have Windows 8 for Dummies, but I'm (very) confident I'm not that unfamiliar with any operating system.
Faiblesse Des Sens
What are you having trouble with? You basically treat it like Windows 7 except for the start menu. For the start menu pin all of your favorites and organize them. If you hit the minus sign in the bottom right you can then right click on columns to name them. Windows 8.1 makes that feature way more apparent. If you want custom tiles and shit then use OblyTile. Important shortcuts (all on the desktop) Alt+F4= Shutdown menu Win + I= Go right into the settings section of the charms menu Win + X= Power user menu Win + W= Settings search. Won't be necessary in 8.1 as it will have combined search again.
TheFlyingGerbil
OMFG. I'm trying to log in to rewards.xbox.com but it keeps logging in under my old gamertag. There's only a "sign in" button that logs me straight in without an option to input my username/email. There is no link for "not you?". I've closed the page deleted all MS and XBOX cookies and restarted Chrome, but it still logs me in as my old gamertag. I'm logged in on xbox.com as my current gamertag but visiting rewards from there still logs in as my old one. How the heck do I log in?! Faiblesse Des Sens
My only thought for something that works like that is Win 8 with your Windows Live/Hotmail/Outlook/etc account. But that would only be with IE10. Edited September 6, 2013 by Faiblesse Des Sens
TheMightyEthan
Different browser's probably a good thought.
staySICK
damn, why didn't I realise sooner that to pull data off an old drive, even with windows on it, all I had to do it plug it in and power it to access it in my current system. I was worried the two drives with windows formatting would cause some royal screw up. I haven't been putting much time in skyrim because I had to pull a gamesave off my old ssd. Eleven
If it's in user data folders, wouldn't that be encrypted? I think I remember having a problem with accessing the data when I put in an old HD.
TheMightyEthan
User data shouldn't be encrypted unless you specifically tell Windows to encrypt it.
staySICK
nah it wasn't. It did try telling me I couldn't access it but all I had to do was open as admin.
Vecha
Wondering if someone could help a noob out.Right now I have an AMD A-10 5800k processor with a Geforce GTX 550ti.I have ~$200 dollars that I can use to upgrade...something.So...do I get the new 6800k APU(that is about 150,,,but I've read that it'll only give a me 6 percent increase). Get a new GPU? I'm leaning on the GPU...but not sure what would be the best bang for the buck( I don't care if it's Nvidia or AMD/ATI). Should I get a AMD/ATI card that will work with the GPU in the APU?(I'm pretty sure that just sounded ridiculous) Or should I just blow the 200$ on hookers and blow. Also, new mothboard/CPU is of course out of the question at the moment...maybe next year. Thanks for any tips! Luftwaffles
Get a new GPU. I'm not too up to date with the latest models, but I'm an Nvidia guy all the way, so I suggest you go with them. As for the second question, the performance increase in pairing two pieces of AMD hardware together vs. 1 Nvidia and 1 AMD is nonexistent. TheMightyEthan
I've got an AMD CPU and an Nvidia GPU and have never noticed any issues.
Vecha
Alright...will look at jumping to a new gpu...just gotta see what is available for 200 bucks.
staySICK
see i was going to say hookers and blow...
Mr. GOH!
Don't listen to us until you tell us what power supply you have. I suspect that will be the limiting factor. Wait until you have $300 dollars and then upgrade the GPU. You get a lot more bang for your buck on GPUs between $250 and $300. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, that would be my advice too, wait until you've got more money to do a bigger upgrade.
Vecha
I have an Apevia 700w power supply. Guess I could stash the cash in the meantime...
Luftwaffles
Apevia That sounds terrifying. Wait until you can update that as well to a Coolermaster, Antec, Corsair, or something more reliable.
Vecha
And Apevia aren't reliable? Or...just that you've never heard of Apevia? I'll change it out in two years. ETA: Apevia used to be Aspire...I've never had problems with them. Edited September 29, 2013 by Vecha
