Faiblesse Des Sens
Huh? It uses function keys for that just like a laptop. That keyboard isn't daily driver anyway IMO. It's main use would be for TV setups.
Eleven
Oh god it does! I've tuned out the blue fonts. I never expected them to have other functions on the arrow keys. My other laptops always had those separate.
Eleven
But enough with the keyboard woes: What do you guys think of this laptop? It's an Acer Aspire I can get for ~$870 USD. Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 4510U Haswell (15W, 2-Core, 64-bit, 2.0-3.1Ghz, 4Mb L3) Windows 8.1 15.6" LED Backlight HD 16:9 Gloss (1366x768) 8gb DDR3 ram memory 1tb 5400rpm sata hdd, Card reader nVidia® GF 840M E.Grpx, Pipelines:96 (2gb/64-bit, Core/Mem: 938/2000Mhz) I'm also wondering how the 840M would fare against my GTX 560 Ti. I'm not really looking for an extreme gaming laptop, but if it holds up nicely against my desktop card then I'd know if the whole laptop is worth it or not. And I'd be able to better judge the type of games I can run on it. Edited June 28, 2014 by eleven
TheMightyEthan
The 840M is approximately 1/3 as powerful as a 560 Ti. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Eleven
I kinda wanna do this, so I could eliminate my gaming desktop completely. I have too many computers right now... http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1191969-external-gpu-for-laptops-supercharge-your-graphics/ Anyone you know have a similar setup? Mal
No. It doesn't surprise me that it exists but this is the first I've heard of a setup like that. Didn't read it but first thing that pops into my head is it's a pain in the ass to get the connection going and second is the power supply. Eleven
You can actually buy a complete case+power supply and you just need to plug-in the video card. Looks sleek. It's a rectangular box that's a little bigger than the video card itself and there's a power brick. Of course, that one's $300 i think, called the ViDock. But it looks like a regular PSU + some kind of board (he called it PE4L, i don't know what that is) would work, you just don't have a case (the 2nd picture in the link). TheMightyEthan
I just skimmed that link, what interface is it using to connect to the laptop?
Eleven
It's supposed to be able to use ExpressCard (most common, on Windows laptops at least), Thunderbolt (common on Macs), or mPCIe (supposed to be found on the underside of laptops). Totally not worth sacrificing portability (though that looks okay in that regard) for power. Though I'm spoiled and inherited an ultrabook. Eleven
^ I ended up not getting that, due to how underpowered the mobile graphics card is, thanks to Ethan's link. I did think about getting a Chromebook, but there are programs I use that are Windows or Mac only. I don't really need an internet machine as I have an iPad. That works well on the couch as it is. I still plan on getting rid of my desktop, but when I do I would go the route of the external GPU. It's pricier than a desktop, but cheaper than a gaming laptop, and I could have some portability (some because I need an external monitor). And I did just get a laptop from work. I'm still thinking about it though, and trying to read those links I posted. Back to keyboards though, I did get a cheaper $10 keyboard and used it for about a month. I miss the Apple keyboard but I the cheap keyboard was fine. It was a standard Logitech USB keyboard with no extra buttons or anything. Anyway, I did spring for the cheapest mechanical keyboard I could find on Amazon, the Rosewill one and it arrived today. I didn't really get how good mechanical keyboards feel as I was reading about them. But they really are a LOT better. I immediately felt it when I started typing. I type documents and code a lot so this improvement is very welcome. Edited July 30, 2014 by Agent 1011
madbassman39
Alrighty, I have a silly issue that I have no idea how to fix and my google fu isn't helping. I like desktop notifications from chrome for my personal email! Its great! I also really prefer the look of Gmail offline, because that is great! How do I get google notifications for Gmail Offline? Every time I google it I get useless information on how to set up google notifications for gmail, but never for gmail offline. I almost conceded to the fact that gmail will never be as good as I want it to be with my impossible standards. Can anyone help me?
Eleven
Is this the blue Gmail Offline app in Chrome? I tried it, looks like it doesn't work. You may have to keep a gmail window open for that. That's the only time I see those notifications. I have a workaround that involves both IFTTT and Pushbullet. Though when you click the notification, it only opens a link to mail.google.com, and not the message itself... and it sends notifications every 15 minutes or so only...
madbassman39
Yeah, it used to work, then they changed the Hangouts deal and are kind of segmenting everything. I guess I have to stick to regular gmail, which isn't terrible.
TheFlyingGerbil
I want to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my new SSD, but I only have a (genuine) Windows 8 product key. There are a ton of tutorials telling me that I use the windows 8 downloader, enter my key and cancel it when the download starts, then open the 8.1 downloader and it will automatically download 8.1 (skipping the product key entry) but this doesn't work any more - it always asks for an 8.1 product key. I can't find any answer to this though several people have posted the same problem. I really don't want to install 8 then upgrade as it twice as time consuming and apparently leaves the install a lot bigger on your HDD which is pants (plus I think that's janky as every time I go to the Windows site it says I'm on 8 even though I've upgraded to 8.1 through the app store on my current install) . Anyone downloaded 8.1 recently with a 8 key? I don;t know why they have to make it such a nightmare - I have a genuine key, and the upgrade is free, so why make me jump through all these hoops. I was excited with my new SSD but now the joy has been tainted
Eleven
This might help: http://www.howtogeek.com/187525/how-to-perform-a-clean-install-of-windows-8.1-with-a-windows-8-key/ I haven't tried this. The last time I installed I was in the same situation as you and ended up installing 8, and upgrading to 8.1 through the store. Basically, the link says you just create an install media (USB maybe), then edit a file that allows you to install Windows 8.1 without a key, then you'll just activate it later after everything is installed using your Win 8 key.
TheFlyingGerbil
That's the same instructions I was stuck on, unfortunately. MS have updated the downloaders so it always asks for an 8.1 key so that method doesn't work any more. I should be fine once I get the download as I have the ms generic 8.1 key that I can use to install (once it installs, my 8 key will activate it fine) it's just getting the download file in the first place and ms have fixed the above fiddle even though it was just a shortcut not illegal. Eleven
Shouldn't that key allow you to download the installer and from there create a media? You should be able to find and download the Windows 8.1 ISOs (untouched) somewhere if you want, if that's all you really need. Then make sure to check the hash to be sure it's an untouched ISO. https://superuser.com/questions/593366/where-can-i-download-a-legitimate-windows-8-iso-image Like for example, you can download the untouched ISO from pirate bay (or any other torrent site you want - because I don't think other websites actually host these on their servers). Then check the hash and if it's good, you're good to go. Edited August 22, 2014 by Eleven
TheFlyingGerbil
I was hoping to get it direct from MS so I knew it was kosher, but that looks unlikely. Hopefully that article will help me get a legitimate file. Thanks.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Can you just not snag an ISO from digital river anymore? I have a legitiate Win8.1 download, oddly, so I'm not sure if that applies anymore.
TheFlyingGerbil
Nope, you can only get it direct from ms for 8 and they made 8 and 8.1 keys different even though it's a free upgrade so my 8 key won't let me download 8.1 from then. I want 8.1 ISO because it is quicker and creates a smaller install than 8 and then upgrading
TheMightyEthan
Clicking my mouse wakes my computer up from hibernation (Windows 7), I do not want it to do this. Eleven
Someone on a ms technet thread said this would work (after doing what you did) https://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/21706/section/troubleshoot/crid/428/lt_product_id/5870/tabs/1,3,2,5/cl/us,en/kw/ then further changes here (last post) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/05744eec-9df6-4836-ba47-e8125c2172e1/cant-disable-mouse-from-waking-up-system-in-standby?forum=w7itproui so basically disable 2-3 options. haven't tried it though.
