deanb
Because: Simplicity - Don't need to know whether your OS is using the 32-bit or 64-bit version, there will only be one version Duplication - Don't need to make both a 32-bit and 64-bit version of your driver/program Limitations - Aren't limited to 32-bit address spaces, certainly something that's been a bother in games for a while. And there's nothing to say that a Windows 8 device should have infinite forward compatibility with OSes. There would only be a few folks left behind at this point anyway. If Apple can bite the bullet on dropping older processors I'm sure MS can have a crack at it too. That's if everyone else doesn't drop 32-bit support before them, already a few games out that support 64-bit only due to the RAM limitations. madbassman39
Not to mention that if you aren't buying a new computer, then maybe you don't NEED the new OS. They may want it, but when you consider that XP had a life span of a bajillion years, 7 will probably have a similar lifespan, and 8.x will still be able to run the Modern apps, there will be no need to really upgrade your OS unless you get a new computer. Upgrading from 8 to 10 will be purely a want rather than a need. I'm pretty much OK with Windows requiring a 64 bit for Windows 10, it makes sense to do so now. I don't believe that new OSes should be accessible to all computers either, because once we start catering to the bottom of the spec sheet the ability to move forward is on a leash and can only go so far. I'm also really bitter though because I can't seem to make the 64bit iso install the 64 bit version on my computer.
Faiblesse Des Sens
I just think this is stupid because Windows 10 is meant to directly address complaints about Windows 8. So you want them to address complaints but then not let people use it? Dick move. I understand where you guys are coming from but I think it's far too early for it.
madbassman39
I think you're right FDS, but at the same time I can't think of a good time to remove the 32 bit system. If not Win 10, then Win 11? When ever Microsoft decides to do it, they're going to have to alienate a specific audience. Although thats part of the problem with Microsofts business plan, they don't control the hardware so they have to rely on software sales, where Apple can get away with changing their OS to 64 bit only because there is no chance that someone will ever buy a new 32 bit computer. deanb
More late than early really. I see your point to a degree, though there's nothing saying folks should expect to be able to upgrade thier OS and the same argument would continue in perpetuity. Win 8 should have been thier clean break, and they didn't take it. Still not taking it with Win 10. Going off the current cycle it'll be nearing 2020 by time it gets killed off (assuming they do kill it off next round and not keep it around even longer) @Madbass: With Windows 8 Microsoft made the Surface tablets (and continue to do so despite the heavy losses), so they do have direct sway there. Beyond the surface tablet you'd struggle to find a 32-bit desktop or laptop, really only leaving the tablet side of things, which mostly run ARM, and MS already made WinRT for that purpose and already lacks any support for regular desktop programs anyway so no (extra) losses on the software compatibility front. madbassman39
OK, so I got a proper windows 7 64 bit installation disk, reformatted my hard drive, and chose the hard drive to install on.... I never got an option as to if I want to install the 64 bit or not, I hope this works. Does windows still say under computer "windows 7 x64" when you look at system properties? That'll be the first thing I look at and hopefully thats what happens. I'm pretty much at a loss as to what else I could be doing wrong that would prevent games like BF from allowing me to play in full graphics (or at least higher graphics). When I had the 32 bit OS the options were greyed out and I couldn't change them. I'll check back in later tonight and update... if I'm not putting my fist through the fucking wall. Faiblesse Des Sens
Windows 7 has a very similar menu. Also why did you need a disk? You can just download an official disk image for free.

madbassman39
I had the iso that was free and it didn't work (something I did wrong), so I asked my IT if they had a spare disk I could borrow just to make sure. Long story short, got it to work and I am happy again.

madbassman39
Thank you for that, but I'm sure you read my ENTIRE post saying that I did something wrong, so I got a disk to make sure I had everything right. Just because it's there doesn't mean that my download isn't corrupted, when I burned the media I did something wrong, or even during the installation. I don't know what I did, but it installed a corrupted version, forcing me to have to re-install. I even downloaded the ISO off of a Microsoft support page. Faiblesse Des Sens
It's literally two steps 1) Download ISO 2) Copy to flash drive using Windows 7 USB Download Tool They've made it piss easy.

I'd say this is more about an inability to follow directions. How are people so bad at that?

madbassman39
Ok, I have a question to go along with some photos. I recently (an hour ago) got my 970 GTX, and I'm going to install it replacing my existing 550Ti. In my old 550Ti I only required 1 6 pin PCIe power adapter, but for my 970 I need two. Currently I have the single adapter with a second identical that has been wired in tandem (pictured below) Are both of these OK to connect to my 970 or do I need to install a completely separate adaptor to my power supply with the cables that are provided?
Faiblesse Des Sens
Not 100% certain but I do believe that you're fine with two that are wired together instead of having separate adapters. Just think about people without modular PSUs. All of that shit is wired together. HDD connections certainly work fine in those sorts of chains. Also that little 550 Ti is cute.
madbassman39
Compared to my last graphics card (some nvidia with like 6 numbers or something) that thing was huge. Now it just looks so small when I whip out the new one.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, you're fine to use the two that are wired together, that's why they make them that way.
