CorgiShinobi
So I'm thinking I'll be wanting to put more RAM into my computer. Anything I should be aware of? I've had the same 8GB in my computer since I built, so I don't know if I need to be concerned about compatibility. EDIT: Alright, I looked up a little more info and my only major concern now is: Can I use three of my four slots for RAM, or does it have to be in pairs? I ask because I took a gander back inside my tower and see that the fan on my heat sink overlaps the fourth slot. There's really no comfortable way of moving the fan and sticking RAM right below it. So I might be looking at pulling out my old 4GB sticks and putting 8GB sticks in. Actually, it's my third slot that's covered by the heatsink, so looks like I'd have to replace my two... Mal
If you are running an older computer like mines, you might have trouble finding RAM sticks with the same timing and speed as the ones you have right now. They exist but they are expensive for what they are and I have plans on redoing the Mobo-CPU-RAM so eh... still I really want 12 GB of ram instead of 6 GB. It would help a bit with the System and Compressed Memory process that Windows 10 has.
CorgiShinobi
Yeah, I was looking into (at the time) getting the same exact RAM, but at the time that's like denying an upgrade. Reason why I was looking into this at all in the first place is that Dark Souls 3 is crashing for me and the first time it crashed I received a message about system memory. Second time it just gave the standard crash message. I'll try turning down the lighting as I've seen that suggested online, but it would be nice to have some breathing room. deanb
Don't quote me on this but I believe you can run odd RAM sticks, however they'll be really fucking slow and you'd be better off going with having less over 2 sticks than hobbling it with 3. The D in DDR is Dual Data Rate. Given the price difference between RAM n coolers it'd be more efficient to buy a new cooler alongside more RAM rather than allowing a cheap cooler to dictate the parts in your PC. Mister Jack
So my laptop runs like a dream when I have it plugged into the AC adapter, but when it's on the battery the sound is choppy and videos play at a choppy framerate. Anyone with a laptop know what that's about and how to fix it?
CorgiShinobi
So I got myself 16GB of RAM to replace my 8GB of RAM. I consulted with some fellow PC friends and they thought spending the money to replace my heatsink and then RAM wasn't worth it because I already have one of the top-rated heatsinks. I got my RAM today and went to install it. Turns out the 8GB RAM sticks I had were just unnecessarily tall because my new RAM sticks actually have a low profile. Rather than just replacing the first two, I left them in and place the new sticks in the third and fourth slot. I now have 24GB of RAM. Seriously, if I knew these new sticks would have sat so low, I could have just got 8GB more. Well, doesn't hurt to have some extra RAM, right? EDIT: I'm now at 16GB of RAM. I noticed my frequency was lower than before, so I thought I would do a manual adjustment in the BIOS. I reboot and nothing on the screen. OH CRAP! I try a CMOS reset based on my situation, but that didn't work out either. I figured I'd chuck out the odd pair in the group, have the BIOS recognize the change and keep it at the new sticks. It worked and I think that's enough fiddling with my computer's inners for a while. Edited April 17, 2016 by Atomsk88
Eleven
So my laptop runs like a dream when I have it plugged into the AC adapter, but when it's on the battery the sound is choppy and videos play at a choppy framerate. Anyone with a laptop know what that's about and how to fix it? There are some settings in power manager that limits CPU power and other stuff (like dimming screen brightness) to some percentage when not connected to AC, to conserve battery. Check if your laptop has it's own power manager program or settings program (I know for example Lenovo's power manager program for its Thinkpad line has these), or check Window's power manager settings.
deanb
Thoug be aware that if it runs at full pelt on battery, your battery will last a lot less.
CorgiShinobi
Yeah, there are some impressive laptops out there, but all that performance usually means you're running on an average battery life of 4 hours. The default power manager, whether it's brand specific or Windows, is typically fair for average use. Granted, I have seen them be a bit excessive for the sake of drawing out as many hours out of a battery. Those are typically the Eco settings or what the program wants to call it. Mal
What mouse do you guys use and what, if any, problems have you had with them? The Consair Vengeance M65 reviews really well except for the problem of the middle button screwing up. My replacement (from Consair warranty of my first one) is starting to show signs of it dying and nope, I'm not dealing with an eventual middle button death with a second replacement. TheMightyEthan
I have a Logitech G500 that I like a lot. The closest thing to a problem is it has buttons that can turn the sensitivity up and down between 5 programmable presets, and sometimes they get hit accidentally so my cursor is too fast or slow, but it only happens once in a blue moon and is super easy to fix by just hitting the button again.
deanb
I'm on a RAT 5. I like it, though folks that see it in person are like "whoa" n reckon it would be uncomfortable, when in actuality it's really nice cos you can tweak the shape. My main issue with it is it has a side scroll on it, but I can't for the life of me get it to work in anything or bind it to any particular command. Mr. GOH!
I use generic Microsoft mice, one wireless and one USB, and have no problems with them unless the battery on the wireless mouse is dying.
Mister Jack
I'm just using a wireless Logitech right now that works perfectly fine, but if you want something gaming specific I have also used the G500 and would recommend it.
Mister Jack
So my laptop runs like a dream when I have it plugged into the AC adapter, but when it's on the battery the sound is choppy and videos play at a choppy framerate. Anyone with a laptop know what that's about and how to fix it? So I think I may have finally solved this by turning the sound quality from 24 bit down to 16 bit. It pretty much sounds the same to me. If anyone else ever has this problem, try doing this.
Mal
And the middle click is completely out. Friday cannot come fast enough. While I didn't get the G500, it looks perfectly fine, but I decided to try out the G600. It's kind of an experiment since I'm unsure how well I will like all those buttons to the side but since I do quite a bit of GIS and other programs, I figure all those extra rebindable shortcuts will come in handy. Once I get my G600, I'll RMA my M65 and maybe request something that will not have the middle click die on me. I don't recall it costing me anything last time so why not? Mister Jack
I'm having a weird problem where the Windows sounds are not working, but I can play videos and such and the sound is perfectly fine. Anyone ever see this?

deanb
Ghosts. I believe they like to be called the "Machine Spirit". You can please the Machine Spirit by offering rites and driver updates as well as looking into what devices are set as default, it's possible your video player is using the correct sound output and your Windows isn't. I know VLC can play different output than Windows assuming that's what you use.
Mister Jack
Yeah that was the first thing I tried. The machine spirits are fickle bitches. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
TheMightyEthan
Have you tried threatening it with physical violence? I have found that works surprisingly often. Windows has the ability to have different volume levels for different programs, is it possible the Windows volume somehow got turned down without the master volume getting turned down? (I'm being literal with that question, I don't know if that's even possible.)
