TheMightyEthan
Alright, got the components all in a wishlist on Newegg, now as soon as I get approved for this credit card (0% interest for 15 months and $150 cash back if I spend more than $500 in the first 3 months) I'll be ready to roll. I could just go ahead and do it now, but if Chase wants to put $150 toward my new PC innards who am I to stop them?
Saturnine Tenshi
An early congratulations!
danielpholt
Okay so I've got some LED lights plugged in via USB but the bastards don't turn off when I shut my PC down. Short of turning the PC off at the wall/PSU I can't get them to go off. Any ideas?
deanb
Unplug them, USB ports are always powered. Or plug them into a PS3, they turn off when the console is off. Or plug them into a phone charge in a wall port n switch that off. My mouse has an LED scroll wheel in it, I just put my flatcap on it when I go to bed. Actually googling about it seems, while designed for the Raspberry Pi but I imagine not an issue, there is actually a product that's a USB cable with an on-off switch in the middle: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AFUNTA-switch-Raspberry-Arduino-Toggle/dp/B00OYQ9J26/ There's also this if you want to get really serious on the whole on-off switching things https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/USB-Hubs/Haoponer-7-Port-Sharing-Switch-Laptop/B00ZOV263Y/ This is probably why I'm not super rich. Cos I go "who would want on-off switches for USB ports. Who want's to "turn off" their pen drive or whatever." And yet here we have someone who wants that functionality and someone somewhere has seen dollar signs in their eyes.
danielpholt
Thing is, before I updated to Windows 10 they'd stay off when I turned the PC off.
TheMightyEthan
Are you actually turning it off or putting it to sleep/hibernating? *Edit - Also, I'm not 100% sure but I believe sometimes there's setting in the bios to control USB power. danielpholt
Shutting down via Windows. Also whenever I shut down and update Windows they turn off and don't come on until I've turned the PC back on.
deanb
It'll be UEFI now, but yeah can be a setting in there to tell the USB ports to turn on or off. Otherwise that hub thing seems kinda cheap n useful thing to have.
TheMightyEthan
Le sigh. Oh well, there always has to be some problem during a computer build/upgrade, I'm just glad it was a software problem and not that any of the parts were bad. *Edit - At least Windows 10 installs infinity times faster than 7. TheMightyEthan
And I spoke too soon.
Saturnine Tenshi
At least it'll boot faster.
deanb
But then it'll crash windows.
TheMightyEthan
At least it'll boot faster. Oh, I've been on Windows 10 for a long time, this is just the first time I've done a clean install (always before I was upgrading a copy of Windows 7). Eleven
What is this thing for? I got this with my PSU. I've never seen it on my other PSUs... This is my PSU: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008VQ2Y4K/
deanb
I'd guess in case your PSU\case lack matching holes? I've noticed there has been a change in PSU design recent years, especially with most cases putting it on bottom instead of top.
Eleven
Hmm... now that you mention it. It's a small form factor PSU. Maybe this is so I can install it to a bigger/regular case so it matches the holes? Edited November 27, 2016 by Eleven
Mr. GOH!
I think that's exactly the reason, Eleven.
Eleven
Help! So is there a proper orientation for the fan? I've read there isn't but... should I install the thing so that the wire has the most slack? Edited November 29, 2016 by Eleven
deanb
Yeah I usually go with slack, mainly cos it's easiest. Just gotta make sure the wires are kept out of the way of the blades really.
Eleven
Thanks!!! Almost done, but man... I should have ordered those RAM sticks from Amazon... It's the only thing missing from my build! Estimate on my Newegg shipment is next week, I wouldn't mind spending $15 more to get it on Wednesday... Mr. GOH!
By the way, Eleven, what are your new rig's specs? Just curious.
Eleven
I was going to post on the other thread but it's not built yet. Motherboard Gigabyte Mini-ITX CPU i5-6500 3.2Ghz GFX Card Asus GTX 1070 Turbo Memory 16GB Team Elite And this is my case: SilverStone ML08B-H 450W PSU I posted earlier
Mr. GOH!
Very nice! I have a 750w power supply, which is way more than I need, because I remember the days when every new graphics card drew 100 watts more power. Edited March 7, 2017 by Mr. GOH!
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, my PSU is 680W or something, which was more power than I needed when I got it, and my new PC actually uses less power after the upgrades than it did before them...
Mal
For such a small case, I would worry about overheating but damn if that form factor isn't sweet. You can carry it with one hand! Edit: I have a 850W PSU. At this point I'm totally over multi-GPU setups since it's so poorly supported so all that power is kind of moot. I'm not sure how much power I'm using but it should be rather small compared to it's full potential. Edited November 29, 2016 by Mal
