Installed a new motherboard/cpu last night.

Might have done something stupid....I placed the cooler on the heatsink...tried to snap it down...freaked out after looking at the cooler instructions that i may have forgot to open/close something on the cpu(if I had a FM1 socket...I have FM2).

Ripped the cooler off as gently as I could...saw that I put the cpu in correctly.

The paste was smudged on cpu and cooler.

Put cooler back on as carefully as I could. Hoping the paste will work correctly after fucking with it by taking the cooler off.

Started it up and Bios says Idle is at 42C...worried that my taking it off and putting it back on may have consequences down the line :(

Ugh.

Also, didn't realize my new mobo has NO IDE connectors...so both my dvd drives are outdated...going to bestbuy to pick up a sata DVD drive after work today so I can reinstall windows 7.

Hope my rambling made sense...

Not really asking a question. Just sharing basically.

Feel free to reassure me that everything is ok, or let me know my cpu may blow up down the road.

Decade

The seagate(s) have lasted longer than all the other WDs.

When I say decade...I mean I got my first WD...failed after 2-3 years...bought another...repeat...repeat.

I won't say ALL WDs suck ass...but I am one unlucky sonnabitch when it comes to WDs...my seagates on the other hand have never failed.

Though...I will admit...I use my WDs the most for heavy reading/writing...

See I'm the complete opposite, currently sat copying files onto my WD portable HDD, with a large external back-up back home. Seagates have generally been the ones that failed, and mechanically at that which makes it nigh unrecoverable. Probably the most notable for really shitty hard drives was Maxtor, but they've thankfully gone under at some point past 5 years or so.

I am looking to get a new laptop since I have a stack of gift cards for Best Buy. I am trying to keep my budget between $300-500, and I found a few that seem to have good reviews. I'm not incredibly tech-savvy so I could use some feedback on some of my choices. I wanted something that could hook up to an HD TV, and has relatively decent gaming capabilities so I can still have some of my favorite steam games on there.

http://www.bestbuy.c...kuId=6917233I am rather skeptical about Dells, any opinions on the hardware/graphics?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+15.6%22+Laptop+-+4GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Sparkling+Black/7336049.p;tab=reviews?id=1218840175099&skuId=7336049 I've got an HP desktop and had practically no problems with it, so it's a brand I trust, all I heard was their customer service sucks, but BestBuy has a GeekSquad in their store out here so it's not a major issue. It's a bit pricier, so I was hoping to get some comparisons to the Dell.

Sorry for being a computer r-tard, but I trust your guy's opinions.

The Dell listed is integrated Intel graphics, as well as a shitty Celeron processor so you can easily dismiss that. Both include HDMI out which should make it pretty straightforward to output to TV should you wish. The HP specs won't blow your socks off but should run stuff like Borderlands 2, TF2, Dead Island etc fine. Might struggle to expand into games built for next-gen though. Resolution of the screen isn't that high either which should help in it playing games.

If you have to choose between the two (Since both HP and Dell are crappy in general), I would go for the HP one for the reasons Dean posted. I'm not sure about Borderlands 2 and Dead Island but I'm have a good feeling that it'll be able to run the games I gifted you and the other games you have.

Shitty software also affects other software too as I found out over Xmas. Setting up Skype on little sisters tablet and my dad signs in on his laptop for them to test video chat. And is a cat. I end up having to now troubleshoot why Skype is replacing my dad with a cat, going through all the menus to no avail. Go the web looking on Skype to find out why it's making my dad a cat. Turns out it's nothing to do with Skype, it's a program Dell install that replaces webcam output with a cat avatar. Because that's why people use webcams, so they don't get to video chat with people. They've got their own rocketdock thing installed too which only services to confuse. Dock programs are fine, if you know what they are and why you're installing it. But if it's this thing that bursts out the screen now and then it only leads to confuse and annoy.

I am buying from Best Buy because I have collected a total of $360 in gift cards over the holidays, so pretty much I'm looking into whatever they have to offer.

Long story short, I'm moving out and I want something I can hook up to a TV so I can watch shows, too. As far as the games I hope to play, I mainly want to stick to TF2 and Guild Wars 2. I'm trying not to exceed $600 if I can avoid it.

I don't think HPs are terrible, as an HP user, they are terrible if you want to play games on. I had an Acer and had issues with that laptop from the get-go, but people seem to really like them. Best laptop brand I've seen for the price? Asus is good and Toshibas are pretty good.

Yeah, I've always had a negative view of Acer, but that's probably mostly because the bulk of my experience with Acer is from the laptops my high school had in the library, which were shitty as hell, and I'm sure they just bought the absolute cheapest/crappiest model they could find.

Yeah Acers are shit, especially around the power port and the keyboards. My sister is on a Vaio at the moment and is lasting her much longer than her Acer did but you'd have to keep an eye out on them in a sale to get them cheap though.

Lenevo are cracking devices, could survive the apocalypse. But they're built for business use, complete opposite of something I'd recommend for gaming in mind.

There was a hardware thread but I didn't wanna post there because this is just a keyboard, but has anyone tried the Logitech K400 (or K400r)?

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/Wireless-touch-keyboard-k400r?crid=26

I'm interested in the battery life of the thing. It needs 2 AA batteries, but it says it can last for a year. I have a logitech keyboard, the revolution, it requires 4 AAs, but it only lasts for around 3 months. I'm gonna use it on the PC connected to my TV and I like it because it has a touchpad built in, which is very convenient.

Or maybe you guys have used a similar keyboard?
