Games you like that everyone else seems to hate

i liked ffxii and ffx-2, but i've learned from teh internets that i'm really not the only person who liked them although i guess common knowledge is that they're supposed to be bad. but i fully agree with said sentiments that they were not .. you know, bad. i actually really loved ffxii once i finally got into it, and it has balthier in it! ffx-2 i can't say i loved the story, but i agree with the battle system sentiment. if they'd made a non-spinoff game with that same type of battle system, maybe minus the girlie sentiments about dresses and whatnots, everyone would have loved the hell out of it. so it's a shame they put it in that game.

I also loved FFXII. And as for the girlie outfits/story/etc. in FFX-2. I kind of liked it? I mean, it was fun having a lighthearted RPG for once and it was a really clever play on the job system found in the older games. What's sad is the constant total reinvention of the battle system when there are definitely elements that should remain if they're working as well as they were. And who doesn't love dresses!? Uhhh...

the dresses part i could totes see being cool, but i'm not certain that it would appeal to broad strokes of people. plus, if it was a non-spinoff story chances are there would be male protagonists so the whole idea of a dress-sphere would probably not go over in western markets at that point. not that it shouldn't, it just probs wouldn't. and the story, did you really like the story of that game? really?

:bun-question:

Metal Gear Solid 2 and 4

The only people who hated MGS4 are people who wanted to be disagreeable, and the only people who hated MGS2 are idiots who can't get over the fact that it's not Solid Snake long enough to enjoy the freaking game. The plot was kinda dumb in 2, but the game was very fun, and had some INCREDIBLE details in the gameplay. Like catching a cold, shooting fire extinguishers, and so much more.

I hated MGS2 because I hated the goddamn tanker. No other reason. I even like Raiden.

I said nothing of the story! I don't even remember the story, so I guess that speaks to how much I cared about it. I can see a lot of people who dug FFX being disappointed that their emotional story became a girlie jpop extravaganza. Fortunately, I kind of hated FFX so that didn't bother me. I'm not trying to say that people should like it. I'm just totes down with the dress sphere for inexplicable reasons.

EDIT: I totally said something about the story. Whoops. Who knows why I wrote that?

yeah, the concerts were ... confusing. i mean i guess the world of x was like that anyway, arenas for *shivers* blitzball and all that. but i remember starting the game and literally almost not continuing because i was just so "what ... the ... fuck..." but then i found the battle system and we were buds again. i never liked the story, at all, but the gameplay was that good it was pretty excusable.

...Metal Gear Solid 2 ...

When I finally decide the play the series, I was surprised that a bunch of people hated the game. I really enjoyed it even though I had to play as Raiden. I hated the Rose conversations at first, I was kind of impressed how it went from totally fake to real.

Fission Mailed... So pissed at the time because I stopped to take a break. :bun-cry:Taught me never to play the MGS series while sleepy.

I also liked Final Fantasy XII. I wish that the main character could've been Basch instead of Vaan, but to each their own.

well, ffxii was designed so that you could pretty much ignore vaan most of the time anyway. he was really never a strong, or solid, lead. so the fact that he was unlikable really didn't ruin the game for me like it did some folks. balthier's character was stronger, more interesting and overrode the fact that vaan was stupid.

I thought what's-his-face with the beard and long hair was originally the main character but then they were all 'No, it has to be a young kid. We can't have an older person as the protagonist'. I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

I think it's about that time you realise Square-Enix have no fucking clue what they're doing.

meh, i never said they did know what they were doing just that vaan was easy to ignore. they've certainly shown enough that they're kind of shooting in the dark lately that i'm not overly excited for their next release or anything, but that really doesn't discount the fact that i really loved the game ffxii ended up being. and, yes, basch was supposed to be the main character but i guess he tested badly in focus groups so they tacked on vaan. the fact that he was annoying, and even there to begin with, was dumb but in the end it didn't ruin the game for me. because he could be so easily ignored.

edit: now i see how my comment could have been construed as saying they did the vaan thing on purpose. more accurate statement: "well, ffxii ended up so that you could pretty much ignore vaan most of the time anyway."
