Game Series Gone Stagnant

Know of any video game series that were once fresh but have now run their course for just being too repetitive or turned into a game-of-the-year money making machine? Doesn't have to be current, you can even post series from the past.

For example, the main Mega Man series in the past up to 8. I mean, 4 was pretty good, but it just felt like Capcom were starting to run out of gimmicks to add to Mega Man. The New Mega Buster, for instance, just felt like cheating to me when I used it compared to the slide from MM3. I think the stagnation came to a head, though, when Mega Man 5 came out. That was honestly my least favorite game in the series. It just felt stale at that point, and I don't even remember having any favorite tracks from that game at all. The quality started picking up after that, but it just didn't feel the same as it did when playing 1, 2, or 3.

Plus, the hilariously bad dub in 8 was just… bad.

P.S. A free e-Cookie for anyone that gets the description reference. B)

I'll be the first to go ahead and say CoD. Shame too, I adore COD4, but they really are raping the shit out of that franchise. It needs innovation, and they won't let it grow.

And speaking of Mega-man, the Battle Network series. 1 and 2 were good, even the third was (granted they made it two versions ala pokemon to make more money I think). Once 4 came out, it went downhill fast.

One more thing I forgot to mention is that I would like to add sports games, but I don't think they really count, on account of:

  1. Roster changes in the real life sports every year. Pretty much guaranteeing a fresh lineup every year.
  2. Technical changes to the gameplay which add to the value of the newer games over the older one. (aka AI and such. For example, NBA 2K11.)

In spite of that, when sports games DO eventually reach that pinnacle of utopia, I'd like to see them transition to DLC updates every year instead of forcing us to buy a completely new game every year. Doubt that'd happen, though.

Man, I was going to mention CoD in my OP, but I didn't want any backlash against me for saying that. At least someone knows how I feel with Treyarch and Activision. Seems like it's going to get worse now that Infinity Ward's kinda gone dissolute.

Megaman X went south after 4 IMO.

Medal of Honor got stale really quick but then again the whole World War II FPS sub-genre got old.

Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero, actually pretty much every Activision game ever.

Sadly, Halo is reaching that point for me.

Oh christ, how could I forget Megaman X. The way they milked that franchise after X4… dear god, it seems like Capcom are masters at milking stuff past expiration date.

And see, I've always thought that developers would just move onto newer wars (Korean and Vietnam) after WWII, but that's before CoD4 came onto the horizon.

Agreed on Activision, though. I don't think they even make Tony Hawk games anymore, do they?

Yeah, I just wonder how you can make any changes to the core gameplay that doesn't ruin the series. If you change it too much it isn't Halo but then again, I'm getting bored with Halo.

The online I think is getting stale, but I have yet to be bored with the sp when I have friends over. I think if they do a good job with sp, and somehow manage to please mostly everyone with the multi, it will last a while.

I'm still unsure about Reach online after playing it for so long. Sometimes the armor abilities feel op, and sometimes they feel totally useless. A long hiatus would be good for the series, but that's doubtful.

I don't count on buying the new IW made CoD, or Treyarch made CoD for that matter unless something major changes. Shame too, I liked WaW. If they bring it back to the simplicity COD4 had online, and cut out all the shit you will never use, and overpowered killstreaks, I might jump back in.

I'll wait on Respawn.

Weren't there also 6 Megaman Battlenetworks on the GBA alone?

Yeah, and then they released some on the DS. Not sure if they are still churning those out though.

I think in 5 or 6 they made a major change, and when you fought a boss, it went to a SRPG like view, and played like one. I really liked it, but apparently it was not popular.

What you said is what I think what happened with Final Fantasy XIII. They changed it way too much that it didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game. Hell, some people said they enjoyed Final Fantasy XIII when they think it wasn't a Final Fantasy game.

It was entirely linear for almost the entire game, and then it's an open world.

In each battle, you spend all your time trying to figure out which set to switch too. I hated everything attacking almost automatically. I felt like I had more control over my party with the gambit system in XII. Those two things made it horrendous. They also took out shops, and such. In every FF game, you remember the story, and most of the time you remember when you got X weapon, or got to X town. Not in this one. T_T

Mario Party, my mom loved the crap out of that series but after awhile you notice it was pretty much the same game with upgraded graphics and perhaps 20 different games. If Mario Party was still being made today, you get the feeling rather than make a whole new game, they'd just let you download (for a price) 10-20 games every 6 months.

Seriously, Pokemon. It needs to end.

but you gotta catch' em all, and you can't catch 'em all if they keep adding them! It's like a never ending staircase!

Also, Nintendo needs to stop rehashing the same games, just on a new system. I speak of Nintendo condensing the original Mario Bros games into the All-Stars cartridge, then revamping it to add in Super Mario World, then re-releasing the original Mario Bros game on Gameboy Color and GBA, and now rehashing Mario All-stars on the Nintendo Wii, but just porting the first All-stars game from the SNES, and using the version that did not include Super Mario World. I mean, could the disc just not handle THAT MUCH DATA? Just let the original games rest on the virtual console...

Halo's been feeling old since it's virtually been the same scenario in the virtually the same period. Yes, Halo Wars was an exception and yes, Halo Reach was set before the trilogy, but they didn't want to explore too much out of what made them successful. Reach was the most experimental Bungie went with Halo, and they did a good job making it feel new yet still feel like Halo.

The Forerunners, depending on how that rolls out, could be great, or it could be the franchise-ender.

I'd say ODST was a far bigger leap of faith than Reach. I loved ODST but a lot of people not only hated it, but didn't see how it was worth the money at all.
