Yantelope
Wow, my FPS on those settings was only like 25. Definitely need to look into upgrading my GPU soon...
staySICK
well, I actually played at those settings, and I got about a constant 30-40 fps on the demo. It sure looks pretty though. One thing is for sure.. I have GOT to get a new mouse soon. no scrollwheel is killing me. JC2 tells me the back and forward buttons on my mouse already have bindings, yet I can't seem to find what they do.. I was going to change them to next weapon and previous weapon in the meanwhile. ceedee
I used to use ATI and AMD. But then they got terrible. AMD isn't so bad, they're just not as good as Intel these days if you have money to spare. And even though ATI cards are powerful, they still have driver issues. So I just stick with my nVidia. A GTX260 is all you need to run anything at max these days so I won't be upgrading until the next console generation.
Yantelope
Okay, thinking about ordering this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161355&cm_re=radeon_6950-_-14-161-355-_-Product 6950 is looking like the best value at present. staySICK
definitely looks like a good option. I'd say go for it; let us know how it turns out
Yantelope
Yeah, at $100 less than the GTX570 it just seems like the best value at present.
Faiblesse Des Sens
If it's anything like the other 30 vs 50 vs 70 comparisons... you can likely just overclock the 6930 to the 6950s levels without any issues and save some money. Yantelope
Apparently there's a firmware flash available so that you can unlock the extra cores that the 6970 has on a 6950 but it's not tested so there's no way of telling whether the extra cores will work or not. It's something that ATI AMD has done for a long time. I had a Radeon 9800 SE back in the day that could be unlocked to a 9800 Pro. Sadly my cores didn't work and there were artifacts so I had to go back.
staySICK
Yeah, at $100 less than the GTX570 it just seems like the best value at present. you can also keep in mind that the 470 is $30 cheaper currently, and in some reviews ran neck and neck with the 6950, but overall I can see the 6950 being the better deal. really I'm just amazed the gtx 480s haven't plummeted in price yet, considering the 570s are $50-$100 cheaper, depending on brand, and are on par or surpass the 480s. Yantelope
It seems like there's a small but noticable performance boost for the 6950 and the extra $30 for the extra 2GB will probably matter. With new games like Rage being so heavy with textures I bet the Memory is going to be more important than it has been in the past. As far as the GTX480 goes, cards like that just disappear because manufacturing costs don't go down on them and they can't compete in performance. Mal
Part of me think I should of waited for the 69xx instead of just getting the 6870. Not like I'm complaining about the 6870 but hey, I could always go for something better. It is only about $45 more after MIR. May the best card win in your purchase! Yantelope
Just read this about the Radeons which is really cool. "There is a very welcomed Enthusiast feature that has been added to the Radeon HD 6970 and Radeon HD 6950. Both video cards feature dual-BIOS on board. This BIOS can be switched between with a little slider switch on the top of the video card. The reason AMD has implemented this dual-BIOS is so that people flashing their BIOS’s will not brick their video cards...simple as that. One of the settings on the video card is the factory default BIOS which is protected. The other BIOS is open and allows you to flash to it. If you screw up your BIOS flash, all you have to do is switch the video card back to the protected BIOS and re-flash the other BIOS. This is a great safety feature for enthusiasts built right into each video card." That would be great for trying to flash the card up to a 6970. TheMightyEthan
That is a really cool feature. Sounds basically like a built-in modchip.
Yantelope
Yeah, I kind of like how manufacturers have been more and more accommodating of the tweaker enthusiast market.
Hot Heart
Considering it seems my ATI has crapped out on me after less than a year, I'd go with 'Not ATI'.
Yantelope
what was the brand of it? XFX? Sapphire? MSI?
Hot Heart
Uh, HD Radeon 4850.
Yantelope
yeah but all GPUs are made by a company other than ATI/AMD. Those companies can have different quality products. My MSI Geforce is great while my PNY sucked hard.
Hot Heart
That I don't know, I'm afraid. How would I check?
Faiblesse Des Sens
It should say it in the review or wherever you're buying it from. It'll be named "Sapphire HD Radeon 4850" or whatnot. It should also be very prominent on the packaging itself.
Hot Heart
Yeah, mine came built into the PC. Invoice didn't state which it was, and I couldn't see anything obvious on the card itself when I opened the PC up. Never mind.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Lol. Well that's a bit sketch. Probably was some cheapo one unfortunately.
Pirandello
I use Nvidia cards, and usually eVGA brand if I can get them from there. I don't really trust any of the others. I may use an ATI/AMD card in the future, but we'll see how that goes. I recognize Nvidia models much better than ATI ones. Speaking of which, what's the ATI/AMD equivalent of the GTX460? Hot Heart
Lol. Well that's a bit sketch. Probably was some cheapo one unfortunately. Probably. It was a £60 upgrade to that as well. Not amused! I think it's just the fan on it causing problems, so I'll see if I can get that replaced.

I may use an ATI/AMD card in the future, but we'll see how that goes. I recognize Nvidia models much better than ATI ones. Speaking of which, what's the ATI/AMD equivalent of the GTX460? ATI Equivalent would be the 5770 or the 5830 (one difference is, the 5830 is a newer budget release on the 58xx line). My friend had a 5770 and it ran stuff pretty spiffily. I have a 5870 and it runs just about everything (except the obvious problem children, such as Crysis and Metro 2033) at a pretty consistent 60fps and max settings, and I lurv it. If you're going buy ATI, or any new card really, I recommend XFX. They offer a double lifetime warranty - meaning, not only will they replace your card if it dies, but if you decide to upgrade eventually and want to sell your card on Craigslist or Ebay, etc, as long as you transfer the registration, that person too gets a lifetime warranty for the card. I nabbed mine off eBay, and since I knew it came with the lifetime warranty, it was as good as buying the card new even though it was used - because even if it died or had issues, they would send me a brand new one.
