Majora's Mask. Took what OoT did and built on it. The Groundhog day elements were brilliant, it felt like the world around you was alive, rather than a bunch of bots spawning in, stumbling their way about with inadequate path-finding before disappearing round a corner and de-spawning. I couldn't count the amount of time I spent trying to work out how to make a perfect 72hours in Termina. Unfortunately, I never did manage it. Someone always had to do without. (Probably the guy on the toilet, the letter was too important to be used for your purposes, I hope you found another way to well you know...)

For all the smack Wind Waker received for looking "kiddy," to my recollection it had the goriest boss death of the whole series.

Definitely a case of people confusing cuteness with immaturity. Wind Waker is much more mature than most games I've played, particularly on an emotional level.

As for my favourite Zelda game...well I've only ever completed Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass so I'm probably not the most qualified to judge, however I can say that having begun games on the original LoZ, LttP and OoT none of them drew me in as much as Wind Waker. In particular I find that the earlier you go in the series, the less direction you are given, leaving you roaming around with no clear idea of what you are supposed to be doing. OoT I found incredibly bleak and there was so much to do that I found the whole game somewhat overwhelming, I suppose for me it was too effective on those fronts.

Something that I don't think has been mentioned in Wind Waker's favour yet is the music (although this a strong point of every Zelda game I have played) so feast your ears on this:

Why has this discussion been so much about art style? Is that really a chief criterion for which game is the best? I admit it's part of a game and maybe it colors the way you relate or connect to the game but it's surprising to me that the game's length, story, ingenuity or novelty isn't really getting discussed that much.

I can only speculate, but I imagine one major reason is that it's the primary contrasting factor between the games. Aside from the graphics and art style, the bulk gameplay hasn't changed much: Overworld > dungeon > new item > boss > repeat.

Sure the Water Temple was self-mutilating the first time, but now I can conquer the place with my eyes closed. It was those blocks that got me done under to the point I thought I eff'd up and restarted the game.

If I had to complain, I'd probably point out that long cutscene with Impa. I get it lady; I have to go to Death Mountain!

To clarify again: the problem with Wind Waker was that it was clearly rushed to market, not that it was too cartoony. I liked the art style but hated that the game was only about 4 hours long if you removed the 22 hours of redundant sailing thrown in to pad the game.

Best theme tune ever for sailing though

Wind Waker was very good and it damn sure fucking silenced those nay sayers when it came out with its fantastic art style, but it was too short. The sailing took up too much time, with those 2 extra dungeons I'd say they'd have had a decent lenght and not need to pad it out with that triforce hunt.

This is such a tough question...

My unpopular opinion is that Link's Awakening is the best with Minish Cap close in second. As for the 3D games, I really loved OoT (I know, I know -- overrated). Majora's Mask is kind of a tie with Ocarina of Time even though it was the black sheep of the series. However, it is hard to compare the Zelda games with each other. You can't really compare TLoZ with TP for instance because of the huge time gap. Which is why this question is so hard to answer.

Ah, hell. All of them are the best. Except for Phantom Hourglass. o.o

Majora's Mask is far from being the series' black sheep. That title belongs to Zelda II: Link's Adventure. "Black sheep" would mean it is frowned upon, so while a lot of people love Majora's Mask (favorite or not), Link's Adventure is the most controversial in terms of quality and design.

Majora's Mask is the black sheep from the point of view of people who started with Ocarina of Time, and there's quite a few of those.

Oh, definitely. I forgot about Zelda II. But still, I would call Majora's Mask the odd one out. The gameplay, story, and creepiness factor made it awesome, but it didn't really feel like a Zelda game to me.

No love for Twilight Princess? I loved it, played it right through to the end. Sure parts of it were too similar to Ocarina but the parts that weren't (Wolf Link world, the new weapons, the bosses, loads more) were fucking awesome. It was better then Wind Waker

I really liked Twilight Princess. However, it did get a bit old and I left it alone for a year before I finished it. I didn't really like the tedious middle part of the game. However, it was a lot of fun despite that fact.

I am scared that Skyward Sword, however, is going to suck.
