Majora's Mask is far from being the series' black sheep. That title belongs to Zelda II: Link's Adventure. "Black sheep" would mean it is frowned upon, so while a lot of people love Majora's Mask (favorite or not), Link's Adventure is the most controversial in terms of quality and design.

Majora's Mask is the black sheep from the point of view of people who started with Ocarina of Time, and there's quite a few of those.

I started with Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask is easily in my Top 5 (of Zelda). Yes, the first home console I possessed was a Nintendo 64. I played other consoles, but never thoroughly as they were in the possession of either family friends or distant relatives.

Majora's Mask is not the Zelda Black Sheep. -_-

EDIT: If anything, Majora's Mask is unorthodox. There's always been a formula to the series, and a typical princess-rescue story. Link's Awakening broke the mold first in terms of story, but it played similarly. Majora's Mask was a completely reversed Zelda in a lot of ways.

I mean, you're in an alternate dimension, and the villain of all people is the Skull Kid? Hey, why's the Happy Mask Salesman so knowledgealbe, and... WTF? Why am I a Deku Scrub?! Oh, and I have three days until the moon flattens us...

I voted Ocarina. Though honestly, I love them all. I've spent more time playing Ocarina than any other game. Majora's Mask is a close second. I also have fond memories playing the GB/GBC games. The Oracle games are often over looked.

I agree about the Oracle games. I really liked the game play for those games and it was interesting that Ganon was not the main villain, but rather people trying to revive Ganon. People always forget about OoS and OoA...

Well, if you beat both games, there was the secret boss Ganon. :P

True, but he wasn't the main threat in the game. Although, that boss fight was a pain in the ass. -_-

I voted Link's Awakening. It was the first one I played and it was so different to anything I'd played before. I was just blown away that you were playing in a proper world. Don't know if I could say it is the best but it is my favourite.

Do you guys generally prefer the game you played first?

No. My favorite is not my first Zelda game. My first was OoT, my favorite is Majora's Mask.

However, Majora's Mask is my favorite largely because of how it subverted OoT. It would be fair to say that which game I played first is heavily influencing my choice. If someone hadn't played a Zelda game before (in particular OoT) I'm sure Majora's Mask wouldn't be nearly as powerful an experience.

Absolutely agree. Fortunately for me, my first Zelda game was A Link to the Past, and then Ocarina, then Majora's Mask. You could not pick a better way to play those games. You get the brilliance of ALttP, then OoT comes along and you get a true sense of what the Zelda games have been trying to accomplish ever since the original, but then MM shows up and flips the whole concept of a Zelda game on its ear. That's why Majora's Mask is my favorite. Just when you think that the series couldn't do anything else to expand upon the gameplay, it practically reinvents itself and almost creates a new genre in the process.

Hooked with LttP, perfected with OoT, reinvented with MM.

Duke, I will not try to change your opinion. I think that the time limit severely limits how much fun a player can have exploring Termina. The traditional strength of Zelda games is that they present big worlds filled to the brim with joyous details and optional characters to discover. This game presented all that, but gave you a time limit thus limiting how much fun a player can have with the painstakingly created world. Forcing the 3-day cycle crippled the appeal a Zelda game traditionally holds.

Duke, have you ever asked yourself why Nintendo might have done such a hair-brained thing? I hated Majora's Mask when I first played it, and it wasn't until I was able to step away from how "fun" the experience was that I found any appeal at all.

I don't think Majora's Mask is a very fun game.
