Crysis 2

So just gave a spin for Steam guys.

There's quite a bit of placeholder stuff, or stuff like voices and laptop video missing (You'll see in the video)

Also we're hoping the gun noises are placeholders cos they're a bit silly.

Overall, it's fun, it looks nice (though I ran it 720p so I could stream it okayish)

It's much more linear than the first, still got some of the silly interactive stuff in.

When thye video is done backing up on their site I'll link it in. btw it's very spoilerish at the start, though only for folks who played the first.

I will complain that the graphic settings are pretty damn bad. Like you can change resolution then between Gamer - Advanced- Hardcore. Which is like Wut?

As for controls, it's moved around a bit from the last game (I may manually change it to suit the last game, you can see where I try using old game commands then go "okay, what the fuck is it in the new game?") but much more fluid than the 360 version. On the old one you'd use middle click to change suit modes, now it's mapped to Q for defence, E for stealth, strength is default mode, and sprint is shift. So despite what kotaku had been suggesting (I swear Totilo has never played the first) there is actually all the old suit modes, just mapped so there's very little break in switching between them. I liked the cover mode. It's context sensitive, so if you aim while behind any cover you lean around it, just aim where you want to shoot, it's quite nice.

HAH! it's done uploading while I typed this:

http://livestre.am/CdAw

Sorry on the static. They reckon it wasn't on it when streaming. I think it's cos Livestream was taking my mic stream, but as the TF2 guys know, if I don't have my boom attached it just transmits static.

Oh and for folks watching the dev stuff in the corner, specifically the FPS counter and wanting to see if it'll run on their system:

Intel Q6600 Core2Quad @ 2.4ghz

6GB RAM

9600GT 512MB

And this was the 64-bit version at 720p on "Gamer"

Oh and transcript to read for when sound goes:

1:29 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: its 600x800 on gamer settings, yeah?

11:30 - deanb [k]: now

11:30 - deanb [k]: 720p

11:30 - deanb [k]: I put it windowed so I can use the streamer

11:30 - deanb [k]: but yeah, it's on Gamer

11:31 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: hmm..I was reading comments and people said they were having issues with higher rez

11:32 - deanb [k]: well 720 is what 360 runs at

11:32 - deanb [k]: btw it works yeah?

11:32 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: yep

11:33 - deanb [k]: are you seeing the mouse?

11:33 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: yep,..little yello circle and all

11:33 - deanb [k]: well thats not tnice

11:34 - deanb [k]: btw sound stops I assume when I alt tab?

11:34 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: yep

PuddiTiger entered chat.

11:39 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: just saw that too, mate. hilarious

11:39 - PuddiTiger: hehehe... I stole the 250GB drive from my brother's old computer.

11:39 - PuddiTiger: He won't miss it, his old computer is now my dad's computer.

11:40 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: where did you get it from?(crysis2)

11:40 - PuddiTiger: I think it was the only SATA drive in the machine.

11:42 - deanb [k]: demonoid

11:42 - deanb [k]: only one watcher?

11:42 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: hahaha,..."we couldnt make crysis, he was too strong...so we just made masterchif invades New York"

11:42 - deanb [k]: http://www.livestream.com/deanbmmv - watch

11:42 - deanb [k]: need to lose the mouse though

11:45 - Cyber Rat [k]: that ze new crysis?

11:46 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: yarp

11:48 - Cyber Rat [k]: The one that got leaked yesterday? Master key and all?

11:52 - PuddiTiger: What letter do I assign this new drive...

11:54 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: yep.

11:54 - Cyber Rat [k]: T

11:54 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: supposedly, they found out how to change rez and settings

11:56 - deanb [k]: I'm sorry, but you're hearing that gun soundright?

11:56 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: yeah

11:56 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: p funny

11:58 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: slowtaku? wait a few day, they'll have something on it

11:59 - Cyber Rat [k]: I'm kinda happy this happened to Crytek after all their PC trash talking

11:59 - Bill Clinton[PXOD]: Also graphics settings in system.cfg -

1 - Low

2 - Medium

3 - High

4 - Very high

5 - Ultrahigh?

sys_spec = 5

12:25 - PuddiTiger: Sure looked fun.

Also you get to see how I play games :P

edit: oh, just read your comment on the matter Masterdex. I'm sorry :(

Okay not really. I guess I threw up my thoughts on the potential purpose behind this leak anyway. It's gonna get a decent amount of word of mouth (like this post) and the only bad thing, and this would happen regardless, is if the 360/PS3 version outsells the PC version EA may throw up their hands go "ohhh nnooo Piracy" and make Crysis 3 console only. Their loss.

As for a comparison for when the game comes out, Crysis 1 sold 1.5million units in the first 3 months. PC alone. And that was a game infamous for not running on any computers of the time. 1.5million alone on PC for Crysis 2 is a good sales figure. Especially if console sales are relative, that's a possible 5-6million units.

Also while their readership may be drastically dropping, Kotaku reporting on it (which btw they're the Wiki source on the leak, I went looking for plot, seems no ones completed it yet), just pointed out to a fair few folks that Crysis 2 is floating around on the web. Anyone with half a brain knows where to look, but how many check over a month in advance for leaked games without a huge outlet like Kotaku telling them too?

Well, Crytech pointed it out on their twitter as well so...

The only thing I'm happy about is maybe we can get some early benchmarks so I can order a new graphics card.

Just played the beta. Runs fine on e7400 with gts 250 in 720p(35-60 fps) on "gamer"(what the hell does that even mean?)

Tried to play in 1080p, too choppy.

Still, the game feels nice and looks good. Probably will buy it.

The Beta is out on PC now?

I had no idea - need to google that!

My initial reaction from just the opening since I got kicked off from the game with a TF2 notification... Positive. I like what I see and this is the dumbed down DX9 version. I just might just delete the game since I feel like my first play through experience will be dampened by playing this version. Not sure...

Now this game I don't mind getting day one. Might follow through my status update earlier and preorder.

Well I can say first hand those EA employees do have a habit of leaking stuff ahead of schedule...

Still Tali you have to admit, this wouldn't be out on the net without at least the modicum of input on Cryteks end. It is a developer build after all. This isn't some copy someone got from a mate at Gamestop before release n started building a keygen for it. This is nothing to do with the pirates in releasing this (pirates as in Skidrow, Reloaded, usual dudes)

Either way it's a broken and incomplete release, so at most all it can be used for is a "try before you buy" benchmark run cos I reckon without some major debugging on your end to fix the game up not many folks are gonna be able to play this as a free game.

Whoever is to blame, at least there's that. It's a real shame that there are people working in the industry that don't have any respect for the work that goes into making a game. I just hope this doesn't keep Crytek from devoting time to the PC platform, it'd be a shame if one of the only developers pushing the boudaries of technology were to give up and be content with just staying afloat on consoles.

In regards to Crysis 2 you may be giving them a bit too much credit. They've not really pushed much with this release. Certainly nothing like the first, though most of those high requirements was bad optimisation, but at least it was made up for in beautiful vistas. Crysis 2 not so much. There's been plenty of games since Crysis that's pushed the boundaries, but because Crysis was so infamous for it it seems no ones bothered to look much at other games. I've not played myself to say first hand, but Metro 2033 has gained quite the reputation. Just not a huge seller or strong marketing to get that out there.

As I've said earlier in the thread I wouldn't be too surprised, especially regarding Cryteks comments of late regarding PC development, if this was a purposeful leak to give them a scapegoat to go console only. With PC there's expectations on them to be pushing boundaries, not so much on console. They're clearly aiming to make CE3 the next Unreal Engine, and UE gets its primary use through consoles.

Oh and one clear difference between the first n second:

You may be right about them trying to use this as an excuse to go console only. I'm not ready to give up on them just yet however. Metro 2033, while it pushed boundaries was also fairly badly optimised too. It was a good effort all the same. I find it hard to believe the few graphics options there will be what we'll have in the final version...at least, I don't want to believe it. I think we'll know exactly what direction Crytek is going when the game officially releases.

Yeah, I mean their focus on this latest engine in early dev videos for the engine was basically - hey look - it's Crysis, but running on consoles. And Crysis was among the most pirated games, I believe.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started shifting more toward console development

I'm with MasterDex on this one and say that screen is not the final graphical option screen, its a placeholder. As for pushing boundaries... With Crysis, they made it able to go toe to toe with even stuff coming out now, 4 years later, with the cost of being pretty unoptimized. It would make sense to optimize it with CE3 then try to make some money dishing it out to other devs. Then perhaps, Crytek then go ahead with CE4, which will again push the boundaries. Lets say if they made CE4 able to hold it own after 4 years like CE2 has, well, I'm not sure what I expect to see. Making something that good looking will need quite a bit of dough.

Also, I remember Crytek was really priding itself how tasty Crysis was back before it even released. Unless there were some changes inside the company (Chances are, yes), then I don't think they will abandon us PC gamers.

So I mentioned this on Twitter but I'll point it out here:

I've been hoping about the various "places" and it seems that now the initial beta leak is out, folks are starting to fix and improve on the current build we have. The tools are mostly there and there is some very skilled folks out there so I don't reckon they'd struggle to get it working. I know voices were an issue, but if they're there in the files I'd imagine it's possible to attach them into the game. Also it's getting MP added in, Also it has LAN up n running, which from what Iv'e heard the final game won't have (That's always a kicker when you know it's a removed feature). Heck they might even improve the graphics config set up (It seems that while it's simple on the in-game menu, you can tweak the.cfg files for more control)

Whether you hate pirates or not you have to appreciate the ingenuity and effort some folks will put into games.

Crytek I guess have a month to one up the fans in making the better version of the game. I know the LAN is drawing a fair few folks to grabbing both. And theoretically any additions they put on the beta should be able to be put onto the final build when that's out.
