Looks like the Gawker network is officially the Fox News of the internet.

 

That is so sad a realization for Gawker.com

 

They were, like, my breach into sanity for a while.

Pretty much everyone here despises Kotaku, and moreso with each day. It used to surprise me too.

 

I'm still neutral to the network, but I rarely comment there now. This place eats all my time.

Well yeah regarding that, and specificlaly Epic, but I'm pretty sure the graphical bugs in Bulletstorm were an ATi (fuck it) thing. There's only two GPU manufacturers, Nvidia and ATi. I get you can't test every system, but not bothering to see what happens when you play the game on an ATi card is a bit iffy. It's not that much variety. DirectX is actually meant to massively minimize any difference's between hardware. Especially Dx10 onwards, it just sees the GPU as a particular amount of RAM n pipes, and Dx10 cards are very conformed between the two unlike back in the pre-DX10 days where there was physical differences in how the cards worked.

 

Thing is, Bulletstorm was made to play on the 360, which can only run DX9. The 360 and Windows run very similarly (gee, I wonder why!), so it wouldn't be surprising if the PC version is just a port of the 360 version. That is to say, have it run off DX9 instead of DX10. (Meanwhile, the PS3 uses OpenGL.) If I recall, the 360 uses an ATi card. That problems came up on an ATi card instead of a Nvidia card is kind of odd. Of course, I haven't a clue what the details are surrounding this issue, so take that with however much salt you want.

 

And don't bother trying to link me to some articles on Kotaku about it, because I stopped giving Gawker any of my traffic weeks ago.

4. With regard to his comment about "doing some basic QA on PC" to prevent shoddy ports. It is impossible to test every configuration of hardware and software on public PC's, especially when a lot of that software will never be formally supported (like virtual DVD drives and such). It's not QA's or Epic's fault, it's just an issue inherent with PC as a platform.

 

PC is not inherently a buggy platform and I can't believe you even implied such a thing. Sorry, but plenty of PC devs deliver games with minimal bugs. It is not the fault of the platform.

 

 

How on Earth did you get from "It is impossible to test all the near infinite combinations of hardware and software inherent to the PC platform." to "PC is buggy by nature."?

That pretty much implies that it's an issue and they can't help it. Thing is as Faiblesse pointed out, many devs seem to get along just fine.

It looks much cleaner and consistent on the new layout. Plus, the pictures are at a good enough size where you don't need to iightbox them for the full size like on the old layout. I've always found that annoying. Including how it works on FB currently.

Ashcraft kinda-sorta summarizes the latest round of filings in the GeoHot PS3 hacking case. The long and short of it is that Sony wants the case to be heard in California where SCEA is headquartered and GeoHot wants the case to be heard in New Jersey, where he lives. So there's an argument about whether California courts have jurisdiction.

 

Ashcraft, though, seems to think that GeoHot lives in Northern California, which is stupefying. If GeoHot lived in CA, the courts would automatically have jurisdiction because, hey, he'd b a citizen of the state. It's sort of a key piece of info. True, the Ars Technica article Ashcraft cribbed from does a poor job of identifying where GeoHot is from, but the most cursory google-based research would have established where GeoHot's residence.

Yeah I just read the article and saw your correction posted down there. I wonder if he'll even bother updating it.

I've not visited Kotaku for ages, but I'm still on their newsletter list, I was somewhat amused by their "Guess what, Kinect is actually kinda rubbish." article.

 

No shit Kotaku, who would have thought that the game where pet a pretend tiger and the mini-games that came with the hardware would get boring huh?

 

I can only assume that the money MS paid to Kotaku for their shameless shilling of the jumped up eye-toy has run out now.

I actually don't think Kotaku or Gawker are paid for their shilling. I just think their editorial policy is to be as un-snarky and enthusiastic as possible about new and upcoming things that are 'in-theme' for a given Gawker blog. That's why 90% of preview articles seem glowing.

 

It's part and parcel with gawker's abandonment of snark. So now we get these milquetoast criticisms and glowing reviews of bullshit. It's like the writers are fed feelgood drugs before trying games or peripherals out for the first time. It's sorta sickening.

One, don't refer to "Kotaku" like it's a singular entity. It's a blog site consisting of individual opinions from writers, editors and guest authors. One article doesn't represent the views of everyone on the site. Hell, they can't even agree on their game of the year pick.

 

Second, if you go back and look at their articles about Kinect you'll see that they never neglect to criticize the "Mii too!" nature of Kinect's games.

 

On a side note, I did like that Lisa Foiles had the humility to make fun of herself in that article.
