I've not visited Kotaku for ages, but I'm still on their newsletter list, I was somewhat amused by their "Guess what, Kinect is actually kinda rubbish." article.

No shit Kotaku, who would have thought that the game where pet a pretend tiger and the mini-games that came with the hardware would get boring huh?

I can only assume that the money MS paid to Kotaku for their shameless shilling of the jumped up eye-toy has run out now.

One, don't refer to "Kotaku" like it's a singular entity. It's a blog site consisting of individual opinions from writers, editors and guest authors. One article doesn't represent the views of everyone on the site. Hell, they can't even agree on their game of the year pick.

Second, if you go back and look at their articles about Kinect you'll see that they never neglect to criticize the "Mii too!" nature of Kinect's games.

On a side note, I did like that Lisa Foiles had the humility to make fun of herself in that article.

Firstly, "one doesn't" or (preferably) "one does not" it's quite a strange juxtaposition to use the very formal address of "one" followed by a (grammatically incorrect) contraction like "don't". Especially when educating another on correct forms of address.

Secondly, if you're going to write a list you might as well number all of them, not just the second one.

Thirdly, while it has many authors the Editorial Direction of Kotaku is clearly applied from the top down, so I feel quite comfortable in tarring them all with the same brush.

Fourthly, I'm not going back there. Ever.

Fifthly, and finally, I did like how Lisa Foiles took the unusual step of mentioning her child "Stardom". Again. How unlike her.

P.S. I'm only kidding, you can take offence if you want, but it's all in jest. :)

Metonymy.

I prefer synecdoche, myself.

In response to HotChop's point: if they get to use the editorial "we," then they get to be all lumped together when we bitch about them.

Hmm... I was taught at school that all synecdoches were metonymies, but not all metonymies were synecdoches. After a quick wiki search, I am lead to believe that everything I knew was a lie...

Dude, I really hate to be the one to break it to you. But....remember that cake you were promised?

Wow, really? Considering the fact that they write a story every time someone uses Kinect to make a fractal image in a screen-saver change color, I'm surprised they're badmouthing it.

Lisa Foiles is a "celebrity" columnist and thus probably avoids some of the more onerous aspects of Gawker editorial policy generally, and Kotaku editorial policy specifically. That is, she doesn't sit in on the editorial meetings and her "celebrity" and status as a non-staff contributor affords her some independence from Kotaku groupthink.

God forbid some of us actually read the stupid article. (don't worry, it goes to the "classic" site"

The Kinect is not a bad thing. I'm not saying we should invade Microsoft H.Q. with torches and pitchforks. (YET.) From what I can tell' date=' casual gaming families have been thoroughly enjoying their Kinect systems, and after all – let's say it together – games are about fun. If Kinect-lovers are still having a ball prancing around their living rooms, breaking lamps and injuring toddlers, hey, more power to ‘em!...

It's going to take quite the title for me to re-set-up my Kinect and apologize for all my insults. ("Look Kinect, we all said things we didn't mean…"), but the future is not entirely grim. Child of Eden looks intriguing and beautiful and the incorporation of motion in Forza 4 has piqued my interest. I would say the same about Gears of War 3 utilizing Kinect, but Cliffy already stomped that rumor with his big, burly, rumor-squashing man boots. (Editor's note: So we'll have to wait for Gears Kinect instead, I guess.)[/quote']

She doesn't say anything that a fair and modest gamer hasn't already said: That Kinect has lots of potential, but it's wasted on Wii-clone-shovelware.

I'm not going to bother digging up all the fucking articles, but Stephen Totilo and others have said the same things on numerous occasions. If they happen to get excited about Kinect at times or post lots of articles, it's because IT'S A FUCKING BLOG! They're obligated to post multiple articles a day and Kinect is a new technology that provides lots of interesting concepts and discussions.

I just don't understand some of the posts in this thread. I'm unhappy about what's become of Kotaku too. The site is damn-near unusable at this point. But it seems like a lot of the hate is misdirected.

Whether or not their conclusions turn out to be true, I just have come to loathe the matter-of-fact way they state it and their crap-ola headlines.

Ugh... I can't believe there is no counterbalance to this argument other than to dismiss the fact that Ninty have launched the 3DS and are busy porting the N64 back catalogue to it. There's no mention of the fact that that big ol' Zelda Skyward Sword thing. I mean, really, you're going to do the biggest first party release on the console since the last Mario game, and then junk it?

Like you say, I hate how they're stating this like it's fact, I bet there's a rumour tag on it so that when someone calls them on this garbage they can say "it was only a rumour wah wah wah."

Just a heads-up, a writer friend of mine has an interview with a development team who doesn't think of Kotaku much to put it kindly...and they've gone on record to say something about it! :)

Will post the link here when it's published later. I read some of it and quite understood why they were pissed.
